Vista doesn't have much more of a load requirement than XP. It'll perform well on machines that now handle XP well. Those that struggle with XP might have an issue. Graphics are the main issue but are toned down if glass isn't supported. My 128 Mb Geforce 6200 even handles the graphice fine.

I dont know much about this stuff but I have just bought a new laptop (a few weeks ago) and it has a sticker on it that says "Deisgned for Windows XP, Windows Vista Capable"... Its an Asus 1.83Ghz (I think) duo processor with 1024MB RAM. 80GB HD I think. I guess that means I could run Vista...

I downloaded v6 of Vista Transformation pack, what a waste of time, took like 5 minutes to login and wants to run all these stupid background programs. New Icons and stuff do look good though.

I'm guessing that would be a fair assumption :

Chances are you are eligible for an "Express Ugrade" to Vista. Check with your vendor, as this means you can get the equivelent version of Vista for free, unless you want a higher version.

ive heard that microsoft are giving free copies of vista to those who own a legit copy of xp (there may be more to it)...all you do is pay the postage

anyways vista compatible means jack all besides giving you a false sense of allowing for the upgrade to....and also the false sense that something without it will not work with vista..... i call BS like the millenium bug

as for vista the distro was crap...the OS was worse....the features well whats the use in asking me when it already tries to do it all for you and still gets it wrong
then all the different versions ..... scam!!! one will have a asthetically updated XP, the next one will give you a firewall, next one networking feature one after that will actually work half the time and the 'ultimate' will have everything except work when its needed and cost more than a new car. /end rant

Nope. Free copies to Technet Plus subscribers and to some beta testers who reported bugs.

Yes, a rant and not much more. Base version has firewall and security features the same as the other versions. Next level has the pretty goodies and Ultimate has Bit locker encryption etc.

What are the minimum specifications? I think my computer is getting a bit tired after SP2, and back when I got mine it was a fairly fast computer.
I am currently running Windows Vista Business Edition. As installed with nothing else installed (such as office or games) it is 4.5 gb with system restore on.

This release came from our Tech Net Subscription.

TO be honest I really dont mind the change from XP. I have been running it for the last 3-4 weeks.

Make sure you have fast equipment, lots of ram on your vid card and in your system. !!!

To be honest, it's fair enough to have to upgrade. Whilst I cant quite see where the extra resources are used in Vista (other than obvious graphical stuff), I still think it's more than reasonable for a OS thats 6 years newer than it's predecessor to require a bit more grunt.

I was running RC1 x64 as the solo OS on my PC for about 2 months and had no lockups or crashes. The problem that I had was the lack of a driver for my TV tuner card and the fact that BF2 would run slow and BFV would run without crosshairs. Other than that, it was perfectly fine. But I reinstalled XP with the transformer pack so I get some of the eye candy that I lost going back to XP.

Were you running a Dvico tuner card? If so, that issue is fixed. And mine (TV Tuner) is running fine now.

Hey man, if you don't mind me asking, where'd you get the drivers for it, I can only get it working through vista media centre, not with the Fusion software.

Cheers.

I was using a bodgy Leadtek one. Perhaps I shouldv'e downloaded the x86 version for better driver support.

I generally always refer to the original manufacturer for drivers. They support the hardware better, whereas the cheaper brand using the same chip tend to rewrite to suit their version.

Ok, got my first major vista related problem.
So somehow yesterday my vista decided to corrupt it's registry.
Won't even start up and i'm getting error:
C0000218 which is a registry error.
Is there anyway to fix this without a reformat?
Is it like XP where you could use the disk to do a recovery or something.
If so how do i go about doing this?
Thanks for the help.
By the way, i'm running windows vista ultimate 32bit version.

Is it a blue screen or a message that appears halfway through loading or something?

Boot from the DVD..cant remember the options exactly, but there is a Recovery option somewhere when booting from the DVD...it will give you a good list of options what you'd like to do. Should be something in there that will fix it.

Hey,
Yeah good old blue screen of death lol.
Turn the computer on, it does the little loading bar
thing at the bottom then it comes up.
So it can't actually get into windows.

So if i follow that, there should be an option to repair
the registry or something?
I won't need to do any commands myself in dos
or anything myself no?
