does not look good if this is correct.

more on the possible meltdown >>>

Japanese nuclear authorities say there is a high possibility that nuclear fuel rods at a reactor at Tokyo Electric Power Company's (TEPC) Fukushima Daiichi plant may be melting or have melted, Jiji news agency reports.

Experts have said that if the fuel rods have been damaged, it means that it could develop into a breach of the nuclear reactor vessel and the question then becomes one of how strong the containment structure around the vessel is and whether it has been undermined by the earthquake – and if it can withstand the likely aftershocks.

You can see a photo of the Fukushima Daiichi plant here. The plant is one of the 25 largest nuclear power stations in the world, has six separate units on site, and lies over 200km north of Tokyo.

For more on the possibility of a nuclear meltdown, see our news story.

ok so we have QLD and VIC floods, QLD Cat 5 cyclone, riots and unrest in the middle east, massive earth quake in NZ, shortly after another massive quake in Japan, then followed by a Tsunami, NOW another quake in Tonga and NOW a nuclear meltdown in Japan.

Far out are you sure we are not going to be in "doomsday" anytime soon??

crazy, from the guardian

An expert from the USGS has told CNN that the quake appears to have moved Japan's main island by 8 feet and shifted the world on its axis.

In light of the seriousness of this disaster there has been talk of a corelation between extreme low and high pressure weather systems putting stain on the earths crust and mantle - obviously this has been touted as been due to climate change (talking extreme high and low systems) - this is not necessarily my belief, just saying it has/is being talked about

An explosion has been heard and white smoke can been seen at the quake-hit Fukushima No 1 nuclear power plant in Japan's north, according to local media reports.

Footage on Japanese television showed smoke billowing from plant.

According to public broadcaster NHK, the plant's exterior walls are gone and only the skeleton structure remains.

The broadcaster says several workers were injured in the blast.

Local media also reports that radioactivity at the plant is now 20 times the normal level.

The cooling system of the Fukushima plant was damaged when a massive 8.9-magnitude quake struck the region on Friday.

More than 45,000 residents within a 10-kilometre radius of the plant have been evacuated.

Thousands more have been evacuated from near a second plant, Fukushima No 2, which also suffered damage to its cooling system.

More to come.

Several workers have been injured in an explosion at the quake-hit Fukushima No 1 nuclear power plant in Japan's north, according to local media reports.

The explosion was heard at 3:36pm (local time) following a series of large tremors at the site.

According to public broadcaster NHK, the plant's exterior walls are gone and only the skeleton structure remains.

Footage on Japanese television shows white smoke billowing from the plant.

Local media reports say radioactivity at the plant is now 20 times the normal level.

Nearby residents are being warned to stay indoors, turn off air-conditioners and not to drink tap water.

If people must go outside, they should avoid exposing their skin and cover their face with masks and wet towels.

Chief cabinet secretary Yukio Edano has held a press conference asking people to remain calm.

The government earlier warned of a meltdown at the No 1 plant, but said the risk of radiation contamination was small.

That's sweet of you........

I have family in another part of Japan, I'm thankful they are alright. But some of my friends there know people who live in Sendai and Chiba. Crossing my fingers and hope they are all safe.

My heart goes out to all who have lost loved ones, are looking for loved ones, and have lost property. So much destruction and loss happening lately, one after the other. How sad................
