One response i think actually is the biggest reason for the big locals demise.

" respondents felt that the price of large cars – both the Falcon and Commodore start from about $35,000 plus on-road costs – was a disincentive to prospective buyers"

i think that is a pretty fair comment/analogy for those on the lower income bracket,

if your someone with not much coin, putting yourself in hock for near on 40 k when you can buy something brand spanking with a fair bit of kit for half the price that will do a fair job for most family duties ...... the big local cars have not got a chance.

Yeah I'd agree with that comparison if it was a Falcon vs say an i40. But do these blokes want an XR8 or XR6 Turbo for i40 price...?

Ford Oz just imports and on sells the car. Ford US design and build them. I'm not sure if market specific costs are allocated to FAPA/Ford Europe/Ford Oz etc specifically. Regardless, there'll be no factory overheads for Ford Oz, and R&D for any RHD/Oz specific stuff will be tiny compared to Ford Oz bringing a Falcon to life and ProDrive FPVing it.

I don't think Ford US made the new Mustang a great steer because of RHD exports either. As a product it had to evolve to compete in its largest market (US domestic)

Pretty sure I read that Ford is abandoning the dual clutch boxes in favour of 9 and 10 speed autos.

I've seen 3 articles in newspapers the last couple of days written by that flog Dowling gloating about how poorly Ford have done this year. He actually seemed to enjoy writing it.

Ford dont want to sell locally made cars. The more they make, the more they lose? Isnt that right? Why would they advertise?

No fixed costs are the same, so more is better.

They just can't sell anything.

If Ford had the Mazda portfolio of products, they would sell half that Mazda do.

They'd probably come up with some stupid advertising campaign involving walking fingers or something .....

Didn't expect that many units to find a new home over in the states.

I know it is popular to joke about Holden's export numbers, but combine the Chev SS and PPV figures for the year and total exports (6206) were only around 150 short of total Falcon sales for the year (6349 - though I am assuming that Falcon figure does not include ute).

I know Holden will also cease local manufacturing even with the additional export volume, but those export numbers must have prevented further down days at the Beth and kept some locals employed for a bit longer.

Personally I couldn't give a stuff if those exports were profitable or not for Holden and/or GM - if those exports resulted in more of our local guys and girls getting more hours and/or remaining employed a bit longer then I don't care if a large multi-national loyal only to their shareholders possibly incurred what to them would be a miniscule loss on the deal.

As a Holden guy I wish Ford had a similar deal - not to see Ford (possibly) lose money on it, but to see more Aussies benefit from it. Ford employees or Holden employees - they are our Aussie brothers and sisters - and who here doesn't place the mental and financial well-being of fellow Aussies above the financial success of their chosen manufacturer (other than maybe one or two notable exceptions hung up on their misinterpretation of Ford's and Holden's profit/loss statements)?

No joke on my part, just posting some figures.

That said it would nice to know Holden's total export numbers for the said vehicles.

Side Note: The following numbers highlight how small our industry in comparison,

#10 Ford Fusion 306,860 (Flat Rock, Michigan & Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico)
#12 Chevrolet Cruze 273,060 (Built in Lordstown, Ohio)

All good here, I probably didn't word that correctly as I wasn't saying you posted those figures in jest.

And your side-note clearly puts the size of our market into perspective - one plant in Ohio producing more units of a single model per year than the total of all locally made models for all 3 local manufacturers.

Even if Holden and Ford teamed up to make "Falcadore" a reality (something like Toyota and Subaru with 86/BRZ), and they consolidated manufacturing into a single shared facility, unless things changed dramatically sadly the numbers would still not be viable.

If they think that once Falcon and Territory are gone, everything is suddenly going to be roses with the same bunch of clowns in sales and marketing, then they will be in for a rude shock.

They have big problems. They have good product, but zero ability to sell it, bar Ranger which sells itself.

Sounds about right. We only need to look at how the Monaro did to predict Mustang sales. The releases of both cars have many similarities - both are legendary names dating back to the 60s, revived here after decades. Both will start at about the same price (Monaro started at $47,990). Monaro sold 4274 in it's first full year, followed by 2889, 2656, and 2834. So sales never dropped below 220/month. The Mustang will have a convertible variant as well, plus car buyers today have more money to spend than they did 13 years ago.
