While there seem to be a lot more of this demographic sliding towards the OB's, it's not everyone. I know what you said was in jest.

Back on topic though, I am pretty underwhelmed with the new WRX. Being a Subaru owner of a number of them for years, the hype over the new shape was a let down when I saw it. Felt like there was some Honda/KIA accents to the rear end to some extent.

I still reckon the 2015 WRX shape is a winner.

Prior to the '90s performance orientated Japanese cars were pretty much non existent. By 2010 the amount of desirable Jap sport models could be counted on one hand as they abandoned performance models for bland appliances and crossover suvs.

Nothing dull about 1990s performance, no driver aids, proper manual trans, smaller tyres. There is a reason why most 1990s hero models are worth more than the complicated junk with a limited lifespan launched over the past ten years.

Sorry but

RX7 came out in 1978 let alone its predecessors
Celica/supra also 1978
Datsun 240Z was 1970
Honda had early sports cars
The skylines eve the R32 came out late 80s

It was the early 90s the was a spree of 4x4 turbos. the WRX is the only one that's has kept going
the GTR has never stopped

its really only toyota that dropped off, but are back now

Can't say I hate it can't say I love it.

Am very interested to learn about the STi when it is revealed - if its styling steps it up a notch and with a rumour 300kw/500nm - should be a pearler.

The comparisons with other cars like the i30N, GTI, Focus etc has one issue for mine; I miss my WRX (13 model) more than my i30N... why? AWD.

None of the Jap makers are where they were 25 years ago...

Such as Nissan - Pulsar VZR (110hp/litre 8500rpm), GTiR awd turbo, SSS, Skyline GTR, GTT, Stagea rb25 turbo awd, Laurel rb25 turbo, Bluebird sr20 turbo awd, Primera TE sr20, 200sx, 300zx,

Toyota, Celica gt4, Caldina awd turbo, 130kw 3sge Corolla, supercharged 4age Corolla, Levin, MR2, 1jz turbo Chaser, Supra, Soarer/SC300/400, 2jz turbo Aristo/GS300.

Mitsubishi, Mirage Cyborg at 100hp/litre, Mirage/Lancer GSR, Evo, Galant VR4, Pajero V6 turbo swb, GTO/3000GT, swb Nimbus with the Evo running gear.

Honda, Civic SiR, Intergra, Civic, Accord Type R, NSX,

Subaru WRX, Sti, Legacy RS and GTB, Forester turbo.

In other news the GT-R is dead here because of ADR rules

All relative though, what exactly did Australian sport cars have to offer pre 90s? you had to dive into the 70s to get family sedans with bigger engines and a GT badge

You'll find that most of these cars were financial flops, the MK IV Supra which is so popular now was a flop. and is the reason most of these cars stopped.
late 80's and 90s was where word rally was at its peak IMO. but loss of cigarette sponsorship and regulation changes changed all that

they also weren't sold new in most countries, I owned a few imported 90s JDMs In NZ brought and sold so cheaply. stuff the Aussies never got.

they did keep making a few post 90s Australian just never saw them.

Yeah I just read that, and I don't believe it was ever sold in the US. there are some there illegally

Why do we even have ADRs when we have no industry to protect anymore?

Absolutely ridiculous, if something meets the standards required in Europe, South Korea, USA and Japan then we should just accept those vehicles without any extra red tape bull**** on top of it specifically for our market.

It is crazy....back in the day ADR's made sure dodgey imports were a bit safer but to not allow new cars that comply with other global standards in Australia is just embarrassing.

seems just the way here, was it the focus RS that had drift mode deleted to comply?
maybe those 90s cars were at fault, take the Pulsar GTiR (baby Godzilla)

I think it was more crash protection, lighting etc than anything else...buts its OK to drive a Model T for days and fold like a bit of paper in a crash...FMD.

Yeah or Mitsubishi Express van with its 1 star safety rating (previous model to the rebadged Renault Traffic it is now) that was sold for decades with no changes.

But I can drive this thing to work (and I would too)

Ford didn't have anything after the ESP, Holden had the HDT range of Commodores and Statesman's during the 80's, later the of course the VL Turbo and HSV's came along

The new side impact test regs are a new global standard, but for whatever bizarre freaking reason we are the first to introduce it anywhere in the world. That makes absolutely no sense as we don't make the cars here, and the other countries don't need to comply with it yet. Insane.

No it was the line locker in the Mustang. Focus RS still had drift mode.

Agree I like the simplicity and light weightedness of 90s cars. I’m not saying they were all bad, my original point was the WRX in the 90s stood out. I’m just saying most 90s cars looked a bit bland. Yes, some did not.
