Rubbish! Holden maintained the advantage they had with their simple uncomplicated run of the mill V8 and introduced a sportwagon after they could not see any benefit maintaining a regular wagon so they could be in this position now. Considering the fact that the wagon does not come from the long wheel base, they have also done well not to kill this segment off either at least for the time being.

On the other hand Ford did not update their wagon and then killed it of. Same could be said about the V8 option along with a long wheel base anything. It was Ford that engineered the position they are in and nothing to do with Holden. No point chucking rocks at Holden for having a bigger line up for customers to choose from and then calling unfair play.

This is the biggest worry imho, there is no Ford anything in the top ten. Even Hyundai gets a second mention. This needs to be fixed now before it is too late, and I would settle for a Ford anything at this stage.

So it begs the question, are we looking at this the wrong way?, if the Falcon is on the nose to the general buying public in Australia, should Ford now be looking deep into its arsenal of cars to change the fortunes of its woes in Australia, is there anything else in the world of Ford that could make a big impact in here like the Cruze or are people still pinning its hopes on the Falcon?

So what's "rubbish"? That was exactly my point. Take them away from the numbers and you start to see where Ford has gone wrong.

It is bizzare...seems people want a vehicle that can do it all.

Will be interesting to see if they become repeat buyers.

This is only Commonwealth govt policy. States and other fleets have their own rules, and I think the states would buy a lot more cars as they are more in service delivery.
the policy is positive for Ford as well, as it forces departments to keep to Australian where possible so Falcon and Territory win from it. Again this is commonwealth and not states.

Government (federal and state) only purchased 34,000 passenger vehicles last year (one of the lowest on record). Thats 2833 a month.

The Fed policy is

Quote:
a. Passenger Vehicles must be made in Australia (refer Table 1);
b. Where there is no operationally suitable Australian-made alternative, passenger vehicles that have been imported by an Australian manufacturer with an engine capacity of less than 2,400 cubic centimetres may be considered (refer Table 2); and
c. Passenger vehicles other than (a) or (b) can be selected where there is a demonstrated operational need.
Table 1 has Ford = Falcon, G series and Territory
Holden = Commodore, Berlina, Calias, Caprice, Statesman, and Cruze
Toyota = Petrol Camry, Hybrid Camry and Aurion

Table 2 has Ford= Fiesta, Focus Petrol, Focus Diesel, Mondeo Wagon Petrol, Mondeo wagon diesel
Holden = Barina, epica, Captiva
Toyota = Yaris, Corolla, Prius.

I would hazard a guess that Government purchases of any of the cars above amount to no more than a couple of hundred of each, each month.

Yeah because everyone wants an F6 ute and Territory in the shed, how can you question someone choice when buying a new car? They buy to suit their needs, not yours or anyone elses.

I hope the LPi ute can get back some of the hilux diesel sales (I assume)...maybe they went diesel because of the running costs, not so much clearance etc.

Honestly, local councils around me seem to have only hilux's now as utes.

Brazen, how did you find that info on the Tiers?
Depends i only have the details on the old FG gas,

But lets compare an FG XR6 Egas to a 2011 Cruze

FG 1 XR6 Egas
CO2 emissions 240
Green House rating 5.5
Air Polution Rating 5.0
3 Stars rating

FG 2 XR6 Egas
Claimed CO2 emmission between 204 - 211...
Rating unknown

Series 2 Cruze 1.8 Auto
CO2 emissions 175
4 Stars Green Rating

Series 2 Cruize 1.4T Diesel Auto
CO2 emissions 164
4 stars Green Rating

We have to remember with all the talk of a carbon tax fleet operators will be looking for cars that emit the least amount of emmissions.

I would say the Cruze will do better then Falcon expecially with the different in CO2. Maybe Ford should have built the focus here, coz I have a feeling Holdens going to go gangbusters with the Cruze thanks to the Government support!

Cruze aint canabalising commodore sales, its just canabalising epica sales
Holden Cruze 2,582 2,514
Holden Epica 68 206

Those combined Broadmeadows numbers Falcon 1457, Ute 469, Territory 599 = 2525, are worrisome, in that they would not be high enough to dent the current stock levels, even with a reduced manufacturing schedule.

Territory should have a good month in June...

Thats if they can get them out to dealers (they should have been selling them by now)

LPi will give them 400 - 500 sales across Falcon sedan and ute...

I predict August will see

Falcon Sedan 2000 units
Falcon Ute 950 units
Territory Wagon 1300 units

which should see them back in the black but really they need 5500 - 6000 sales a month to continue manufacturing.

April 2011 new vehicle sales figures analysis
By Alborz Fallah | May 4th, 2011

April has been a slow month for new vehicle sales with an 8.8 percent decline compared with the same time last year. In total, 72,214 vehicles were sold in April and the minor decline has been attributed to the timing of the ANZAC Day, Easter and school holidays.

Toyota was once again the dominant brand, however its market share fell from more than 20 percent in April 2010 to 18.4 percent. The Corolla also slumped in the small car segment finishing fourth behind Mazda3, Holden Cruze and Hyundai i30.

The big winner this month was Hyundai which came in third place ahead of Ford and Mazda, thanks to particularly strong performances by Getz, ix35, i45 and i30. Ford managed to keep Mazda in fifth, however sales of its iconic Falcon dropped to just 1,457 units. Compared with April 2010, it’s a significant drop of 1,306 units.

Mercedes-Benz beat BMW while Lexus sales went down marginally. The new Lexus CT 200h found 175 buyers in April, beating the Mini Cooper and Audi A1. Chinese car makers Great Wall (711 units) and new-comer Chery (165) continued to prove that cut-throat pricing is still a great marketing strategy.

Saab also saw 17 vehicles blip on the radar with the brand’s relaunch into Australia now well underway. Despite the premium price tag, Mercedes-Benz managed to sell more medium-sized cars (C-Class models) than almost anyone (excluding Toyota with the Camry).

The Hyundai ix35 performed exceptionally well coming very close to knocking of the ever-popular Subaru Forester from the compact SUV winner’s list.

A few companies did noticeably better this April compared to last, especially Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Volkswagen. As for the losers, Ford’s market share went down from 10.1 to 8.7 April to April, while Toyota suffered a similar drop. Holden was the only one of the big three that improved its market share over this period.

Year to date both Toyota and Holden have lost around one percent market share but Ford has kept about on par. Honda’s sales have once again declined with the company going from four percent market share this time last year to 3.1 year-to-date in 2011.

FG has just been released in 2008. There is no need (nor is there money) to do a radical change so soon. VE Commodore has been the same since 2006 and is not due for a major styling change until late 2013.

Car wars: sales winners and losers
Jez Spinks
May 4, 2011 - 2:02PM

Falcon woes continued in April but high-end sports car makers such as Ferrari and Porsche were biggest winners in latest sales results.

The Ford Falcon has fallen out of the top 10 best-selling cars list for the second time this year.

Official industry figures for April revealed another poor month for Ford Australia's large car, which with 1457 sales slumped to nearly half of its volume for the corresponding period in 2010.

It was outsold in April by vehicles it was once well ahead of, including the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Getz and Mitsubishi Lancer.
Advertisement: Story continues below

The Falcon also finished outside the top 10 sales at the start of the year, though Ford would have been less concerned about that result as January is commonly a slow month for fleet sales.

Holden's Commodore just pipped the Mazda3 to top spot, by 3075 sales to 3044. The Japanese small car retains a slender lead in the overall sales race, however.

The Commodore's total is a relatively low figure for a best-seller and is indicative of a month that was generally disappointing for the industry.

Every passenger-car segment recorded a drop in sales, while only compact SUVs and luxury SUVs achieved growth compared with April last year.

The overall market fell 8.8 per cent (or 7187 vehicles) compared to April 2010 and 3.2 per cent when comparing year to date figures (down 10,550 vehicles to 322,678).

Supercars and sports cars costing more than $200,000 had a bumper month, though.

Ferrari sold 14 models in April - nine more than the same month last year - to boost year-on-year growth to 42 per cent.

The second-generation Cayenne SUV continues to lift Porsche sales - up 105 per cent for April and 24 per cent year on year.

Aston Martin (+38%) and Maserati (+27%) also performed strongly in April.

The new Giulietta hatchback (54 sales) was the biggest contributor to Alfa's 80 per cent surge in April.

Volkswagen's Czech brand, Skoda, continues to make progress with an 89 per cent increase for the month, though with only 529 vehicles sold to date in 2011 it still has much work to do before becoming a significant player in the market.

Mercedes-Benz's city brand, Smart, was April's biggest loser, with a 64 per cent slump - with year to date sales faring little better at minus 60 per cent.

BMW's small-car brand, Mini, is also struggling in 2011 despite the arrival of the new Countryman crossover. April sales were down 34 per cent; for the year, sales have decreased by more than a quarter.

Jaguar's sales for the month fell by a third, affected by the loss of what was its cheapest model - the X-Type.

All three of the Chrysler Group's brands - Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep - recorded negative results for April, down 32, 15 and 22 per cent respectively.

Ford's 21 per cent decline for April put it ninth in the top 10 losers table, just ahead of Honda. Year to date figures are better for the local car maker: it's down just 3.3 per cent.

Toyota was the only brand to reach five figures for April sales (13,683), though the result will be tempered by the fact sales had still dropped 18 per cent - with a year to date loss of 10 per cent.

Those combined Broadmeadows numbers Falcon 1457, Ute 469, Territory 599 = 2525, are worrisome, in that they would not be high enough to dent the current stock levels, even with a reduced manufacturing schedule.
209 vehicles per day x 5 days x 4 weeks = 4180 vehicles.
To do that and reduce current stock levels, sales would have to increase to:
Falcon: 2200
Territory: 1300
Ute 1100

That makes 4600 meaning the backlog could be cleared
at roughly 500/month x 6 month = 3,000 vehicles gone.

May it will be out. There has been a delay with a software glitch so it might be in a week or two.

Stupid you say?? Really??

Considering most LPG purchases in the past were Wagon / Utes, Ford no longer builds a wagon, yes theres LPG sedans and Utes, but with the increasing cost of LPG many people are looking at alternatives, e.g. Diesel Mondeo's or Diesel Rangers. I reckon LPG probably equated to 75% of wagon sales, if not more, and we all know wagons = 400 cars a month (well they did towards the end). Thats 300 less gas cars that are no longer going to be ordered. So even though gas will pump sales, theres not going to be an increase to the amount we have seen in decline over the last 12 months.

That added with the fact that lots of Fleet customers have to change to alternative manufacturers due to a lag in Ford releasing the new LPG (yes its nearly been 12 months since they could physically build LPG cars), then this creates another problem. Will these customers come back to Ford? Or are they happy with where they have ended up?

To do that and reduce current stock levels, sales would have to increase to:
Falcon: 2200

Ute 1100
That makes 4600 meaning the backlog could be cleared

I'll give you 2000 Falcons. 1300 territories, but cant go any higher than 600 Utes. The commodore and Falcon Utes are slowly being eaten up by their crew cab 4x2 opponents. Thats 3900 in a good month, and those good months (if they happen) are still a few months into the future.

From memory of reading one of the newspaper articles, it indicated Ford had amassed 120 days of local supply. I assumed at the time, they were meaning 4 months of 3000 = 12000 cars. The worrisome part comes in, because somehow they need to feed these 12000 through the system, at the same time of trying to sell the new territory and Falcon to try and maintain a 4000 sales month.

You gotta give me 1100 utes Bob, the EcoLPI is a big hit with them being cheaper to run
than diesel Utes and now that Station wagon is gone, they are the main tool of trade...

The factory has been on three day weeks since before Christmas,
they would hardly be going back to 5 day week, rebalanced to 209/day
if stock was still spilling out of every orifice at Broadmeadows....

We'll see Bob, if the discounted XR6, new Territory and EcoLPI releases don't significantly lift Falcon sales
then I think Ford will be moving swiftly back to three day weeks and lots of down days..

It won't take that long to tell whether Ford is improving its position or not...
