The Charger seems to be pick of that bunch.

Looks good too, but there's still the rear set issue as well as egress due to the roof shape, from memory.

I reckon those Caprice PPV's look mint, and will probably do well over there.

Then again I'm a big fan of the WM range.

For all of you lamenting for a Crown Victoria, import one from the states. So long as you get one earlier than 1986 you can drive it here with no conversion necessary. After all they built essentially the same car for 30 years.

I drove a Lincoln Town Car back in February in the states. Nice car but personally I am a Cadillac man and rate the also end of production DTS much much better.

I agree, those who bag it should try owning one themselves. But if it has to be earlier than 1986, it would have to be an LTD since the Crown Victoria didn't come out until 1992.

Remember alot of the extra length of the Crown Vic is the bumpers. That would account for a good 200mm.

I think the charger would be the best substitute to the Crown Vic for police departments if the Caprice has no place over there. In fact, Dodge Chargers are already being used as cop cars.

I wish it wasn't such a hassle to get these sort of cars from the states. With the dollar where it is you'd get them for peanuts...

While they are used, it's mainly because of pricing, the V6 has been as low as $18,000, that's aggressive...

Ford's new Police Interceptor duo based on Taurus and Explorer have now achieved pursuit rating - LINK

What is even more compelling case for staying with Ford is that all the existing police equipment that's
currently fitted to all those Crown Victorias will fist straight onto the new Police Interceptor sedan...
A neat trick designed to prevent any possibility competitors trying to get police departments to switch...

Love this bad boy:

Noticed NYPD have been using Ford Fusions for a little while.

What's the difference between the Fusion and Taurus? It seems too similar to have a separate model in the line up (yet they Ford AU gets rid of the wagon here).

Fusion is on CD3, they took the 2004 Mazda 6 and stretched it 50mm wider and 50mm longer in the wheelbase,
they have 2.5 I-4 as base, are avaliable in AWD and have 3.5 V6 as an option...

roughly Mondeo sized.....and of course a hybrid which beats Camry's version..

Be an expensive nightmare to get a current Yank car changed over to RHD though. It could probably be done...but I'd hate to see the bill...otherwise you wouldn't be allowed to drive it here as-is LHD because it's less than 30 years old.

Love the wheels on those Yank police cars. Both the ones on that Holden cop car concept and the Chev pictured in this thread. They just look tough.

The Crown Vic is a body over chassis setup right? Couldn't you get a 70s model chassis (its barely changed, right?) and drop a 90s body on the top of it and have it registered as a 70s car and be able to drive it LHD?

No, most transport departments are awake to that one and make you comply to the later model.

Very sad scene indeed. Ford will never, ever produce such a fine car again. In the modern age of thin-steel unibodies, torqueless FWD V6s and fake dual-exhausts, that's what they are going to be producing more of to stay competitive with everyone else. Even if Ford brought back a new RWD V8 sedan, it won't be body-on-frame and it never have the legacy of the Panther platform. If anything, it will be some over-priced car with a V6 entry-level option like the Dodge Charger. Nothing will ever equal the panther platform.

I had a 03 ex FBI PI back while I was in the states, bought it when it had 120,000 miles on it. From the day I bought it, I never spent ANYTHING on it, apart from buying new tires, servicing - the regular stuff. And it still did 25mpg on the highway when driven well - that is 9.4L/100km. Not bad. Not to mention countless cold starts - it gets very cold in the north-east. You could throw as much abuse at it as you wished - it was simply bulletproof. This car is MY definition of "Ford Tough."

It was of common opinion back there among mechanics that this was the BEST car Ford EVER built.

Yeah the Crown Vic will kill it.
A few things buddy:

1. P71 (2004-2011) Specs:
250HP @ 4000 RPM
297 lb-ft. @ 4,000 RPM
See: See Official Ford Fleet Spec Sheet (North America)

2. Keep in mind that the specs you quoted above for the Taurus are only true for the OPTIONAL premium Eco-Boost engine, not the standard one.

Taurus Standard Specs:
280 HP @ 6,250 RPM
250 lb-ft @ 4,500 RPM

Taurus PI Specs/Brochure

I think it is definitely safe to assume that most police departments will be buying the standard engine. Why? Because:

a) Cheaper (Lost of PD's in the USA still face budget cuts, cut on overtime pay etc. They are cutting back quite a lot these days.)
b)It still meets their needs. Remember that 90% or more of the time out on the street is spent patrolling, not in pursuit. And if it is a pursuit, most sheriff departments have a mini-fleet of Dodge Chargers on hand to do that work. (Not saying that it won't be able to hold up in a chase either though!)

So in my opinion, Ford could have spent time modifying the P71 instead of building a new platform. The old one was very popular the whole time among law enforcement - it just needed power train changes. It is also of my opinion that over time, FWD layouts are more prone to mechanical failure over time when compared to RWD layouts. As you can see as well, the specs aren't TOO MUCH of an improvement.

So you are comparing an OPTIONAL Interceptor to a new non-interceptor. I bet the standard Taurus would still beat it. Sorry, but the Crown Vic is a dinosaur. If they need a body on frame, they should get a Tahoe or Expedition, but they don't really need it.

There's a early 2000+ unit in Whyalla imported and owned by a member of the Steel City Drag Club. bought straight from the auction yard in LA and still has the nudge bars and LA police stickers on the doors. I saw it a couple of weeks ago in Pt Augusta at a show and shine.

Its a no nonsense tough V8 Ford. I could not care less if a Taurus can beat it. Im not getting one to win races.

Anybody know roughly how much it would cost to convert it?

Exactly that, its a no-nonsense car. Tough, and legendary. I don't care if it doesn't have the best fuel efficiency - then why are we all driving fords?

Pick up one for me as well mate

I would take a look into the post 2006 generation, received a few beneficial updates.

Yeah! Fuel efficiency doesnt even enter the equation here haha.
You're the 3rd person so far that i know of that wants one....maybe we can use that to get a discount on the RHD conversion!

But yeah, will look into it further down the track, the EL is a money sponge right now
