Bloody hell! I've had one guy look at my BF ute for sale for 10k....Said he didn't like the long range tanks because he'd have to pay to get them tested (why did he drive two hours top look at it then?) And three other interested phone calls but no lookers.... They stuff you around and say they want to look but then they don't ring back!

That is the market at the present, lower your price and sell it or remove the advertisement and hang on to it.
That will get rid of the lowballers and save you the grief and heartache. It's a buyers market unfortunately. ,

It's a buyers market. What people think there car is worth and what people are willing to pay is always a few grand

I don't think the 2nd hand market is too bad - a Nigerian working on an oil rig just offered me more than the advertised price, and his agent will pick the car up for him as he is at sea.

It's not just the car market, but everyone seems to be doing it tough (except politicians). Plenty of food businesses with regular quiet nights now as people aren't spending anywhere near as much on things or going out as much as they used to. Fuel costs obviously having a huge impact as well.
With used cars, the gap between new and used is smaller, or even near-new, so trying to sell anything over 5 years old is a real struggle. The other thing is you'll get tyre kickers and those who expect a brand new car from your second hand car, as well as plenty of low-ballers. Quote:

When someone offers you stupid low money for a vehicle reply with "Sorry, would prefer to sell the whole car".....

Traded my XR50 on a Ranger XLT. I was given 2 grand less than a quote I got about six months earlier. I thought that price was a little low, but still was better than red book. Within the last month, I've seen XR50's going off the lot for less. I guess my dealer need's to hurry up the delivery of my Ranger, so he can offload my trade.

My inlaws have had their BA XR6 on the market for 6-8 months now and the best they've been offered is $15k - the car has done under 10k and is virtually new. They say they lose most of their value the minute you take delivery. Our recent trade in experience was similar, $4k for a 2004 Xtrail. |

I’m always researching the market and there are still plenty of good cars selling for reasonable money, however, I genuinely believe that there are a lot of people who falsely believe that their car is worth a lot more than it really is.
For example, I’m into American muscle cars, a lot of people are but there are a lot of people who still believe that these things are worth a zillion dollars. There was a car for sale in Brisbane for quite a long time on Carsales and various other publications. It was a similar model to one that I was after and spoke to the bloke who was selling it. He knew very little about it as he inherited it. I paid a mechanic up there $180 to go and look at it for me. He sent me a six page report and a heap of detailed photos. Needles to say, I didn’t buy it. After seeing the detailed pics and reading the report, to me, the car was worth parts value only. I didn’t bother lowballing as some here say, I just rang him back, thanked him for his time and said that I’ll leave it with him. Also, just because you have a 71, Z28 doesn’t mean that it’s worth $50,000, especially if it’s ¾ eaten with rust and has a dodgy conversion. You will always have: My EL has a 1,000,000 watt sub in the boot, so that makes the car worth $80, 000. My BA GT engine cover was signed by Craig Lowndes, Henry Ford and Ayrton Senna so the car is now worth $90,000. This car has a stripe option and is worth $50,000 more because of it. And one of my favourites, this car has an agreed insurance value of XXXXXX, well unless you’re planning on torching it, who GAF what the insurance value is. There’s an old saying, cars are worth what people are prepared to pay for them, so why it this so hard for people to understand? If the only offer you can get for a car is $8,000, and if no one out there offers any higher, then that’s what it’s worth. Simple really.

Like I've mentioned previously with second hand cars, if I was to sell mine my asking price would be what I owe on it (so both parties are happy with possible future repossession)
However I wouldn't bother trying to sell mine at that price because in its current state it not worth that. There are legit reasons for a price someone puts on a car, just gotta find the genuine sellers.

I was selling our LP640 Australian Delivered.. New replacement cost was coming like 860k in 2008. Advertised it for Offers over 250k.
I had people offering 180k. foolish idiots. Then one guy telling me about th ehit he had taken on his 2nd hand Fezza 360. I think we are taking the biggest hit! Considering we purchased new. Needless to say we will be keeping the beast. Not worth selling. Last edited by AU1XLS; 29-07-2013 at 05:04 PM. |

Are you ******* serious? Who cares what the replacement cost is? There was also something else that happened in 2008 that may have affected the replacement cost of a new LP640, what was it again, that’s right, the global financial crisis. Did you pay cash for the Lambo? A lot of these cars are financed through shady deals to avoid tax, so if the owners take a massive hit on them, bad luck.

Exactly...when you come to sell a car, you have to be prepared for the market to set the price. Even with something exotic...unless it's literally a one-off, you have to see what the rest of the ones for sale are priced at, and also see if the ones advertised elsewhere are actually getting sold.
Sometimes you just have to take the slap if you truly want to sell... |

What is with the hostility?
It was an example of lowballing. Its an LP640 for Murcie money. It was also priced to sell. Needless to say we are keeping it. also YES it was paid in full with cash.. no finance. Not that it has do do with the second hand car market. |

Market is not dead, I sold my dual fuel AU3 ute a couple months back well within a week of first advertising it. Got $6,500, it had full service history with 165,00kms on the clock.
I paid 19k for it back in 2004.

Sadly, for you, your car is an extreme exotic, therefore you will have a very small pool of people who: 1. Can actually afford one 2. Can afford the upkeep on one 3. Would actually buy one In my opinion, anyone who has the spare coin to throw around on a toy as expensive as yours, isn’t the type of person who’s keen on paying full price for anything. Also, with respect, if people still owe a lot of money on a car that they’re trying to sell, it can have a great deal to do with asking prices on the second hand market.

I've got two AMC Javelins and a Plymouth Fury convertible and have often thought of selling them all and consolidating into one "nice" car rather than three projects. Then I remember the hassles I've had with private sales before .. And just keep them in the shed.
If I do sell it will probably be to a friend or a club member at a lowball price ... I'll get savaged anyway so it might as well be someone I like getting a benefit from it? |

I had a car a few years ago that I sunk a fair amount of coin into, effectively over capitalising on it. I removed a few parts, replaced them with the stock ones and sold it to a member here for what was a very reasonable price. As you say, it doesn’t hurt as much when it’s going to someone you like.

Makes me roll my eyes when I see people say 'it's a buyers market nowadays' - well no, it always has been and always will be. For the simple fact that unless you have a buyer, you will remain a seller.

What a beast UWISH. Good onya if I could afford one I'd have one. Back to the topic, I'd love to get into a new SRT8 @ 1.5% but I bet if traded a 2012 Kia Carnival with 31000ks I'd get jack s..t. Oh well I hope to have my Coupe finished by the end of the year.
