Who says you need 40amps?

In any event....

I could do it with my off grid 20kw setup with 4 SMA inverters and Sunny Island.

Google "Sunny Island inverters" and you'll be enlightened.

The tech (batteries & charging) will get there. Electric motors are better then the internal combustion engine but they still have a couple of hurdles.

The infrastructure isn't that bad of an issue, remember the first cars had not roads just trails that become mud pits when it rained. There was also no servo's either. There will need to be an EV standard before stuff it rolled out (but I can guarantee if a private company does this stuff first then the countries standard will model what is already there). Will ownership of EV's be cheaper then current cars? Doubt it as that's a lot of tax dollars missing.....and we'll pay for it somewhere else.

But the performance cars that are coming out are very very exciting.

I would say companies like Westfield's or McDonald's will put the infrastructure in to entice people into their businesses.

crystal ball time:

sell shares in service stations (you will charge up at home or work)
buy shares in tow truck companies (people are stupid and will run out of juice all the time)
prepare for govco to figure out a way of making up for all those lost fuel tax revenue (and probably add a bit extra on for sure)
sell exhaust shop shares
buy shares in electricity companies.
even better, buy shares in electrical infrastructure companies (many suburbs are getting their electricity upgraded now but i am sure it wont be enough to cope with every one using electric cars
look out for new scams on how to make your electric car 4 x more efficient (george jetson version of the brock polorizor)
bands will play at car races as it will be boringly quiet
hooning will be awesome as you will be able to do skids all night and not wake up the neighbours
always wear rubber boots when moding your new motor/batteries

Gold!!

I wonder if the trick of linking another battery (aka 12/24 volt) will give double the performance! That or a spectacular explosion.

Just saw this in the news - wifi updates to Tesla cars to improve acceleration:

Sounds like an interesting concept indeed.

Tesla has been the best selling luxury car in Norway for the last year.
According to Norway's 'department of transport' there were 4042 Tesla Model S sold and on the roads in Norway in total at the end of year 2014. ( that is 2013 and 2014 in total).
Reason for it is tax exempt for EVs in Norway, and approx. 200% import tax for similar petrol/diesel vehicles.

It's hard not to want an electric car after watching that video. But I do want much faster recharge times (like 3 minutes from empty to 100%) and more accessibility. Maybe a portable battery "jerry can"

Like what they have with phones etc, those little battery packs which plug into the USB port to charge your phone on the go.

I'm sure you could invent something like that on a bigger scale for an electric car.

No really a big deal over there when you pay about 5 cents a kw/h, almost 95% of their power comes from hydro and is cheap. Guys I know over there don't understand the concept of being conservative with using power.
The Norwegian government heavily subsidises EV cars..

I think all tesla charge points (solar) are free for tesla owners worldwide.
They are strategically placed along major routes to ensure nobody runs out of charge enroute.

I checked one out in LA the other year, the interior was out of this world and the overall finish surpassed anything I have seen both interior and exterior.

Can't help but wonder how much better it would be in a bare bones no frills model...

Tesla is always been about the luxury, but surely all that weight and energy use has a detrimental effect on range and performance?

The generation 3 car (Model 3) will address this in about 2 years, a cut down cheaper version with 500km range.

Some of us realize that there is merit in having a car that travels 500k's on a single charge and ...wait for it.....it's FREE power from the sun if you have all your affairs in order....and that smells like zero carbon dioxide my boy.

Oh...and it blows away any car ever made by Ford Or Holden Australia without relying on a violent launch...

yes I've driven both the Roadster and the model S with performance pack.

Zero carbon foot print ? there was labor and fossil fuel used in the transport and aquiring of your raw materials for your solar panels im betting

there was labor and probably fossil fuel power used in constructing your solar panels,

dudes that rolled up to your place to install your solar system probably used fossil fuel powered vehicles.

dudes that created the plastics in the tesla probably didnt use corn they probably used oil based chemicals ?

the exotic materials for tesla batteries dont magically appear out of air they have to sourced ..... some of it mined and probably a lot of labor involved........... more fossil fuels ?

... a little snippet i found

"according to U.S. government data. In 2012 the U.S. produced 141,000 metric tons of synthetic graphite, made by super heating petroleum coke, a byproduct of oil refining, according to the USGS ".

is that a similar process tesla batteries will need to be used to get the graphite for the tesla batteries ??? heating petroleum coke ..... oh hang on ... is that a by product of petroleum ??? hmmm doesnt look like zero carbon foot print so far .
some body has to manufacture the fast chargers and install them .... more fossil fuels used ???
back on the solar panels .......yes its free power if you are in a position to have thousands of bucks worth of solar gear already on your roof,

as for the 500 k`s on a charge, im majorly skeptical of doing that in a high usage scenario.
and also, we already discussed if you had the cash for tesla you could buy x amount of conventional cars and fuel them etc ,etc ,etc , .

i already mentioned the cheap a 2 ton suv barge with a smelly diesel and have change for lots of fuel and still have a thousand k range and be able to tow something as well ;).

as for speed , yep its quick, but for tesla dough ...... it should be !

its a nice car, but ..... it costs a lot of hard earned coin , you have to work and eat a lot of maccas meals and make a lot of methane (which is far worse than carbon dioxide) to pay for this machine, and yet ........ it is still not as versatile as an internal combustion engined vehicle which can be run on many fuels ..... even clean ones..

dont get me wrong if i had a shed full of cars i wouldn't mind having one .... but ......... i just dont see it being better than a new petrol car for half or a third the price or my 14 year old xr6 which is still fun to drive , and after x amount of years it did not cost me 20 grand for a new battery, that in it self must count for something .

For all the back and forth on electric vs fossil fuels, etc., in it's price range (excluding performance based vehicles), I'd still have a Model S based purely on what it offers vs the competition. It's a lot of car for the money in that price bracket.

No more than in your Falcon.
At leasdt with the Tesla there isnt the ongoing petrol distribution and off shore oil drilling to obtain the fuel etc,

The word you are looking for is Lithium,

I haven't heard of a lithium mine polluting the Gulf of Mexico, or an Exxon Valdez scal disaster incident with Lithium...but nice try mate

Cause when you're not charging the car you are charging the house.

(cause half the cost in Australia is tax)

I can't think of anything I would tow regularly enough to justify a 2 ton SUV as a daily rider.

Wait a while till fuel is back to $2 a litre...150 bucks to fill a Falcon coming to a servo near you.

No sweat I can't either....but the price will come down.

My V8 turbo Landcruiser will need 20 grand for a motor in 20 years so I can't see the problem there.

The batteries won't be 20k in 20 years...tech prices always come down.

Or maybe they were produced in a factory using hydro electric power.
One guess is as good as another...

,,

Nope I installed it all myself...so that blows that theory

Recycled plastics probably, you haven't considered that one?

The word you are looking for is Lithium,

I haven't heard of a lithium mine polluting the Gulf of Mexico, or an Exxon Valdez scal disaster incident with Lithium...but nice try mate

Dunno what you think you have uncovered there but extrapolating one guess with a bigger guess means you end up with...a Guess...

Maybe they are delivered to site with electric powered vehicles?
Again your guess is a s good as mine.

In the bigger picture..duzzen madder

The numbers add up with the cost savings.
Cause when you're not charging the car you are charging the house.

You are guessing/hoping it's not true me thinks.

But yes young man, they really do get that much out of it.

If it was half price would you buy one?

(cause half the cost in Australia is tax)

I can't think of anything I would tow regularly enough to justify a 2 ton SUV as a daily rider.

Wait a while till fuel is back to $2 a litre...150 bucks to fill a Falcon coming to a servo near you.
