I went to Klosters Newcastle yesterday, had a LH drive mustang. Looked good on outside, internal switchgear vintage, leather seats nicer quality leather than FGX XR8. Very small inside, no rear legroom.

Opened engine, very basic engine/engineering. Engine revved, mate who was previous Mustang owner said it sounded tinny and throttled back.

Went to my FGX XR8 opened hood, mate looked in and said it looks like...money. Revved engine, he said it sounded much more aggressive with bark than the Mustang.

Based on what I heard and saw only, I am not surprised by your observations as to how the Mustang went compared to the FGX XR8, and I have no regrets buying FGX XR8 instead of going the mustang.

My mate's wife wants a mustang, my mate concluded saying he is going to get an FGX XR8.

Take a bow Ford Australia, FPV and Prodrive- you built one hell of a vehicle in the FGX XR8....

Give the rental I've had in Canada for the last 3 weeks back tomorrow (GT Convertible) been great driving it, but yeah probably a little underwhelmed power wise, who knows, it may even be de-tuned being a renter, although giving it a boot full while overtaking it still gets the job done very quickly. Really enjoyed the car though, roof down cruising the Rockies looking for wildlife with the missus was pure bliss.

Now really looking forward to getting home in a week and awaiting for my XR8 delivery

They are completely different cars, built for different purposes etc etc

Only the insecure will compare them.

Or those who genuinely love mechanical engineering and are engineering nerds.

I agree- they are completely different cars, built for different purposes.

But, they are both the Ford V8 presence for the foreseeable next few years in Australia for very similar coin, and as one is materially Australian designed/engineered, the other American, it was interesting to me to look at both packages.

I was invited to this opening, and went along out of partial interest, and for my mate, who is looking to get a new Ford v8, and he previously owned a mustang and his wife wants him to buy a new one.

Different cars yes- but had there been the gt350 flat plane mustang, or a Jag F type with beautiful sheetmetal, I know I would have walked away and would have had a hunger in my gut and probably felt underwhelmed getting into the FGX XR8, and would have started making plans to buy the car that gave me the horn.

But see- me myself, I felt underwhelmed with the Mustang looking at the mechanical stuff like the choked exhaust, the relatively vanilla engine, the small intake manifold, the average brakes. Had I been blown away, I would have said so, and possibly made quiet plans to effect purchase of a further motoring acquisition.

Anyway, some who may not have seen a Mustang may still find the basic observations as to differences interesting, including those who want a great looking vehicle for 2, with great seats and internal fitout, and good handling from a smaller more sports style car.

The XR8 is a fantastic car but compare it to a GT350 which I believe is USD$48k then its all over (lets ignore our stupid tax system for a minute). But they both have constraints based on their fit for purpose roles. A comparison of the GT350 to the Miami is a "fairer" proposition.

99.9% of people who say they went with a XR8 over a Mustang do so because at the end of the day they actually need the passenger space, towing etc or they cant hold out until they get here.

A base Mustang GT is more in line (mechanically wise) to the old 5.4 BOSS. Remembering that the FGX XR8 is the pinnacle of any V8 FoA has offered, the coyote is your bog stock V8 as seen in a F150.

Put a Mustang GT on a track with corners against a FGX and I dont think the Falcon will bold well. Your waiting until it its its hyper zone (transient boost whatever) and then when it does say hello to heat soak. The coyote in the previous Mustang kept the V8 M3 honest around a track and in some reviews was quicker.

But if you want to smoke a VL Turbo off the lights then the FGX is your pick The Mustang should smoke it too btw...

I love Falcons but outside of towing a boat or carrying 4 people I don't think there is alot it would do better than this new gen Mustang.

Really, is there any surprise the supercharged xr8 feels quicker than the mustang?

Weights aren't that far apart. Two very different cars that just use the same basic engine and then go on completely different tangents.

What an old dog the Mustang must be when it only does a sub 5 sec 0-100

I love the XR8 as much as anyone but come on there are some dreamers around here these days

One way to repair roo damage.

Have to admit, I like the fgx front a lot more on a ute. Can see this conversion becoming quite popular.

Considering what theyre target market is, I can't see them then refusing to insure irreplaceable cars...

What are people paying for insurance on the fgx?

Did my first run from Newcastle to Sydney on the M1 freeway today which is limited to 110kph, and set the cruise control to account for speedo under reading and police gun calibration tolerances.

Literally, I sat in the right lane as I was travelling faster than the traffic during the afternoon trip down, and cars to my front in the right lane moved over as I approached. One hour into the trip I was having a blast and then I realized why, never before have cars moved over from the overtaking lane as I approached in camrys, Honda euros etc.

But in the FGX XR8, it was like I was Moses parting the sea....and it was not my imagination....must be the LEDs and lights or something....

This is a great car for cruising speeds, going at 100 feels like you are doing 50. Also, cruising windows up, no engine noise (is there an engine there?) or gearbox whine. I got sick of the Honda Euro- engine noise and gearbox noise when cruising doing work commutes. The FGX XR8 is very quiet and smooth in terms of engine/gearbox cruising. There is though more tyre noise from that fat rubber.

Awesome car-with me not in control of the accelerator but the computer set at uhm...to allow the variances + 110, I averaged 10.2 litres per 100, and that included some blasts as well.

I am using this as a daily, work commuter for trips between Sydney Newcastle, and for giving the black dog fog a kick if needed on deserted late night remote runs-and continue to be amazed at what a package this is.

When a insurance policy has the new for old replacement feature in place and they are unable to replace a car, for example like the car is no longer in production anymore, they will just cash settle you based on your sum insured of your policy.

So this rumour is complete BS!!

I always find it hilarious and puzzling that they feature an FG X on their ad, but you can't find it in their online database to get a quote.

Looking over some other posts, seems like you can. But if it ain't online, I'm not calling around.

RACV has new for old (in the first two years) and they have it on their list.

It does beg the question after they shut up shop and if its written off what happens with new for old? Do they give you the market value (or agreed) as that sorta stuffs one up as a new car replacement is more beneficial to the owner.

They should give you what you paid for it if they cant replace it. Sometimes they might offer you something of the same value. E.g. if you had a GT they might offer you a Clubsport.

Just got a quote for the XR8 from Shannon's but had to do it over the phone as the XR8 is not available on line as per FGX335's post.

Price was significantly higher than with Budget Direct and I have had only good experiences with them to date.

Also got a quote from Youi. Asked the question about what they would do if the car was written off after production ceased under their "new for old" replacement policy. Was advised that they would "work with me to find you an equivalent car". Be interesting to see what they thought would be equivalent compared to what I would think! Anyway, they were even more expensive than Shannon's so they didn't even get a look in.

Looks like I'll be back to Budget Direct, even though anyone under the age of 40 will not be covered.
