Why is it my local council spends huge amounts of money planting much needed trees for the streetscape, but fails to care for them, allowing them to wither and die?

Not sure where you are but they do that here too. Just in this street alone, 1 in 10 success rate

Here I planted the kerb myself (one each of kumquat and Tahitian lime) as a little reminder of the opportunities we forgo - in this case, arable land at our doorstep. |

It would be wishful thinking on their part. Some owners seem to have a aversion to trees, I’m guessing for a variety of reasons: leaves and maintenance (if near overhead wires) , reduction in parking space or access to front yard, risk of damage to house in future. Our council has been planting a variety of trees and shrubs in our area and the rainfall in the last quarter was sufficient for them to thrive, but some, usually eucalyptus trees, just seem to die. Two at the front of a house in the next street have both died while most of the others in the street (smaller trees or shrubs) are going fine.

This ^^^
We had our street planted a couple of years ago, I'd say 50% were poisoned or vandalized and we had people knocking on our door with petitions to remove the nasty trees. It didn't go so well for them knocking on my door spouting ****

That is probably the expectation, however many non-residential plantings are left to fend for themselves. Just not enough rainfall to get them through let alone thrive into a decent tree.

Trees… I did a quick count of the backyard while watering this morning. Eight trees over 10m, of those five would be over 20m tall. All except one are indigenous, and four (Citriodora) are essentially correct to the area. None would be rated by the council as worthy of preserving in the event of a DA, despite most real estate sales leveraging off the notion of “a leafy suburb”.

They're not called widow makers for no reason. Street trees are supposed to have many benefits including raising real estate prices. Every single street in my area has council planted trees. The street behind me got eucalyptus trees planted. We got something else, not sure what it is but hopefully it's better than eucalyptus. |

Why is it that most public toilets no longer have split toilet seats? These were specifically used to prevent transmission of diseases by not allowing genitals to contact any surfaces. It is damn annoying in the modern toilets trying to keep my junk from touching anything when I am defecating.

Thought that was the anti drip zone.. Try the States and your junk ends up in the tide. Best system ever no landing pad required.

If you think that is odd, traditional German toilets have a shelf which allow you to inspect your waste before flushing it.

what the hell were you searching for to find that piece of information?
remember my grandad telling stories of army boys all in the loos and someone pouring kero or similar and lighting it as it flowed down the line, talk about shaving the tackle.

Yeah theres a simple work around, but why did the jumper kit i bought come only with a 12v ciggie lighter charger? How are you supposed to charge it off a dead car you want to jump?

My father had stories of barrack loos, too - the old sort with an open row of pans and the Pubmatic type flush levers, no stalls or partitions. He said everyone used to wait until after “lights out” to #2 unless it was absolutely essential, and you’d pick an empty pot by the glow of cigarettes from occupied seats.
