Petrol Price crisis......

142.5c/L for E10 at Guildford (Sydney) on Friday 8/4/22. 150 c/L is commonplace in many Sydney suburbs today (Sunday). 179 c/L for 98 Premium also.

Surprised to see that regional Vic (Gippsland at least) ULP its circa 20cpl higher than metro melb. Why would that be?

Looks like quite a few people may have been caught out, as many of the stations were pretty chockers.

Paid $1.75 for 98 before heading out this morning.

Still 20c/L higher out here in Central VIC too than metropolitan Melbourne.

Just had a quick look at PetrolSpy and even though it is two long weekends in a row and many would have taken off next week, even cheaper than before I last filled up with 98. WTF?

Election. Lib's cut the tax sending a real message to the petrol stations, pretty sure they don't want Labor voted in, bad for business... See how the numbers look in 5 weeks.

I have a guzzler v8. Assume I save $20 per fill, fill up twice a week, that would be $40 a week in savings. Run that across 8 weeks from tax cut to election date, that's a total saving of $320. Most people would save less due to having more efficient cars. Its quite worrying that $320 could sway a vote that will have an impact for years to come.

Haven't really noticed groceries bill dropping either, but then again I hadn't noticed that they had spiked before the fuel cut. I have however noticed that eating out has gone through the roof!

Yes they cut the excise but they don't control the retail price. That cut had already worked it's way through the system before I filled up last time.

I'm not sure it had worked it's way through, prices had gone up early (as usual) but they were on notice to drop them quickly.

Likewise, I'm not sure the $320 saving is what the petrol stations are thinking, just that at this unstable time (for them) it's best to keep the boat steady... Give it those 5 weeks though.

I've abandoned my less favourite lunch places that are now $15 a meal too. Except one, they actually do a pretty good curry... But I'd noticed they also reduced the quantity of meat in one meal when the price rose. I persisted and it was a one-off, possibly they got complaints, and/or otherwise they would have been abandoned too. I buy cheap sandwiches on the days I skip the old regular places, I can afford to lose some weight.

Regarding grocery prices, I heard on Triple M that while the government cut the fuel excise, they also cut the diesel rebate freight companies got. (no idea if it’s all companies that got it or depended on size) So fuel for them actually got more expensive initially.

Eating out has been more expensive since we opened up again. Serving sizes are down and prices are up. And now places are expecting tips too.

Had to go down to Brisbane for a couple of days and while 91 was down in the dollar fifty mark, diesel was still up in the dollar nineties.

Yeah these cafe food prices are just rips.
And they seem to make so much money they only open 6am 2pm or thereabouts.
A six inch subway is $5.95/$7/95 depending on franchise and the odd bakery as opposed to a cafe will still sell sandwiches at $5.50 to $7.50.

Interesting cafes charge 9 and 10 bucks for the same stuff.

i get a $15 lunch allowance on the Gc working as a volunteer, my coffee is $4.20 (small) then leaves me $10.80 for food for a 9/10 hour day.
Gets tricky so I m finding all the value places.

It always has been, so has rum and many other spirits and beers, there’s absolutely no correlation

There’s absolutely no fuel shortages anywhere in the world yet OPEC jumps the price up
and then equally astonishingly, the price can fall 50-60 cpl in a week or so just like that.

Amazing how much control oil companies have over countries and peoples lives,
yet most still embrace the addiction to their products at every opportunity
because the alternatives still seem nonsensical….

By the way, big oil is getting mighty ticked off with China switching to so many electrics so quickly,
me thinks they see their massive sales and profits disappearing permanently…….

Yes, but that's a bit like saying what do the refineries pay for crude. Raw form is not really a direct comparison

I think you'll find when the likes of a servo or supermarket buys crates of coke in 2 litres bottles they will still be paying more than the price per litre of petrol.

Great food and value lunch places in Canberra are the Treasury and Dept of Finance buildings opposite each other near the Art Gallery.
Two heavily subsidised government cafe's no wonder public servants don't eat out much.

Diesel and 91 looks to be gradually falling again here.

Honeymoon might be coming to an early end. Whilst most stations are still showing $1.5x ULP in the inner east suburbs, I did just drive past a shell that had $1.92 ULP! The next Mobil station had cars lined up.

Shell has in the past had sporadic jumps for no obvious reasons, so it could be a one off.

Then takes months to drop that 40c/L
