Name of Cafe/Restaraunt:Kinross Woolshed, Thurgoona
Price:$14 or thereabouts
Date Consumed:16 August 2008
Comments:Went into this one with big expectations, oh how let down I was. Was made out of garlic bread (HOW do you make a sandwich out of garlic bread, I do not know and neither do they), had 150gm of steak (they actually specified that size in the menu) and bugger all of everything else. Basically a Bull's left testicle inbetween garlic bread with a half cooked egg on top. Up to @%$#^

Rating: Bah not worth numbers

Well if that place is anything like your taste in Pizza Places, then I'd eat there too

Name of Cafe/Restaraunt: AgQuip Gunnedah NSW - Angus Beef Stand
Price:$7
Date Consumed:19 August 2008
Comments:I had been waiting for this event to have a go for the team. Reportedly the best steak sangas known to man at this event. The first stand we came to was the Angus beef breeders. These sangas are all the simple variety of sandwich. A huge slab of meat on bread with the choice of onion or no onion. Cant get any simpler than that.
The cut of meat was most definitely fillet and a most tender cut at that. At the choice of BBQ's to get your choice of cooked meats, I chose a medium-rare slice of juicy beef. Once laid between the bread and encased in onion(cooked on the BBQ) and a dash of tomato sauce(not to much as to molest the flavour, it was a sight for sore eyes, the aroma was exceptional. The flavour was as expected for such a fresh prime cut of beef. An almost perfect steak sanga.
Star Rating (out of 5, 5 highest 1 lowest): 4.5 ( rating given after sampling my next steak which I will rate a bit later this morning

I did get a photo of this but it was in a half eaten state, not sure if I should post it. I apologise for this as in my haste to get into this sanga I almost forgot the photo.

Name of Cafe/Restaraunt: AgQuip Gunnedah NSW - Hereford Beef Stand
Price:$7
Date Consumed:19 August 2008
Comments: The second of my steak sangas for the day (cant believe I actually managed two in one day but there you go) This meat and bread delight was the most exceptional tasting steak sanga known to mankind. I will admit that it did totally blow me away as I truly believe that either Angus or Murray Grey are the best beef to eat taste wise. The huge slab of beef was cooked to perfection again (true medium-rare), it was served on the freshest flat bread roll (I cringed at first until I tasted it) with the perfect amount of cooked onion (just nicely caramelised, not burnt not raw). A dash of self appointed tomato sauce. The taste explosion was phenomenal. The smile on my face told my counterparts in the great steak sandwich adventure (my eldest & my husband) knew we had found THE one. This would have to be the best steak sandwich, the most definite winner. This is THE steak sandwich that you should travel interstate for, overseas if you must!!
Star Rating (out of 5, 5 highest 1 lowest): 5++++++++

We may get more ratings later today from other stands as the youngest is on a school excursion there and I have given him a mission.

Alas you may well have to wait until next year now Aust :(

I have a plan next year to start a tad earlier & sample the other breeds too. I was curious about the droughtmaster breed, coming to terms with a big mother of a beast that could be ohhh sooo tender. Also the trusty Murray Grey and the possibility of the charolais too, then theres the Brahmas (ugly critters) & the Brafords that all had BBQ stands.

Goes without saying to a true connoisseur that there is more than just looks when it comes to the good ol' steak sanga, the breed of the meat makes all the difference.

MMMmmmmmm way too many nice steak sambos for one little girl there.......

Maybe an AFF meet of meats next year ??????? We could in fact find the best steak sandwich yet

Name of Cafe/Restaraunt: Pig and Whistle Pub Indooroopilly
Price: $16.50
Date Consumed: 21-08-2008
Comments: A nice sandwich served between THICK slices of toasted bread. Fillet steak, lettuce, tomato, onion (cooked), and what the pub called "grandpa sauce" presumably named after something your grandpa would make, a sweet tasting kind of bbq sauce. Not a bad sandwich at all, simple, yet effective.

Star Rating (out of 5, 5 highest 1 lowest): 4 out of 5, until we realised that half the meat was on one part of the sandwich, thus leaving us with a steakless sandwich three quarters the way through, which unfortuantley downgraded it to a 3.

Name of Cafe/Restaraunt:
Hogs Breath Cafe - Cronulla < Other stores I have found to be a lesser quality eg Bondi.
Price:
~$13.95
Date Consumed:
Once every month
Comments:
From the website: "Tender slice of grilled steak, cheese, beetroot, tomato, grilled onions and Hickory BBQ sauce on a toasted Vienna Loaf. It's the #1 choice for steak sanga fans!"

In reality its an awesome very filling sandwich, not too greasy-not too dry, good meat to filling ratio.

Star Rating (out of 5, 5 highest 1 lowest): 4.5

Todays selection

Name of Cafe/Restaurant: Mendooran TakeAway, Mendooran NSW

Price:
~$6.95
Date Consumed: 24th August 2008

Comments: As can be seen from the photo this is a little under toasted. It did have a nice fresh selection of the usual additions of onion, tomato, lettuce, beetroot and tomato sauce. It was left with a huge piece of gristle left on the fine(size not flavour) cut of sandwich steak, was edible and tasty and filled the hunger but not of the calibre of my last samples of these luncheon delicacies.

Star Rating (out of 5, 5 highest 1 lowest): 3.5 (extra .5 as the salads were nice and fresh and a good quantity).

Name of Cafe/Restaraunt:
Mallala Pub, Mallala SA.
Price:
~$12
Date Consumed:
SATURDAY 23rd August

Comments:
When it came out i remembered about this thread and thought it would fit in nicely. it consisted of steak, bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese, betroot, tomato sauce, and spread on the toasted country style bread PESTO!!!. at first i was outraged some fancy lettuce(what is wrong with thinly sliced iceberg lettuce?) and PESTO has ruined my steak sandwich. after i got rid of the lettuce i was fairly impressed at what the pesto did to the taste. only downfall was the steak. it was well done and a little on the chewy side. served with chips and pleasently downed with a few pints of T.E.D from the tap it was a fair steak s/w for a country pub.

Star Rating (out of 5, 5 highest 1 lowest): 3.5 (the steak let it down)
