Nasty turn of events. Whatever the Japanese government says is likely to be less than the real scale of the disaster.

Evacuation zone has been expanded to 20km around the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Power is still out for 1.2 million residents.

Death toll is now 433 and rising..... news coming out of Sendai gets sadder and sadder.

You're not far wrong Resurrection. This has the hallmarks of something quite catastrophic for the Japanese people. I hope it doesn't pan out that way.

I think your right they will probably play it down, i can see why they would, but its not the best thing to do.
I think Japan is well prepared for a big quake but the water and now another (Nuclear) threat not so much.
Who really cares who is broadcasting it at least we are getting some info into what is going on.
Thoughts and prayers.

I don't think they would, not under such close scrutiny from the nuclear authorities who are monitoring this situation closely, and the rest of the world, who are, like you and me, glued to their TVs

Anyone remember that movie "The China Syndrome" I checked the CNN site and it's true as posted above! A USGS Geologist has said the island of Japan has moved 8 feet, and the earth has moved 4" off it's axis.. Due to the quake!

In light of the seriousness of this disaster there has been talk of a corelation between extreme low and high pressure weather systems putting stain on the earths crust and mantle - obviously this has been touted as been due to climate change (talking extreme high and low systems) - this is not necessarily my belief, just saying it has/is being talked about

There are some very disturbing images here.

The first report I read about the power plant explosion was that there were four people injured and my first thought was that it would be total BS as every country has a habit of playing things down. When I saw the footage of the explosion I just couldn’t believe it. There is no way anyone in the vicinity could survive an explosion like that.

I never thought ever see anything like this in my lifetime.

tragic devestation and destruction.

i would take a cat 5 cyclone over that anytime. makes all the problems we have had here in qld a bit minor, ( no disrepect ment for anyone suffering loses here), the flash flooding of toowoomba region execpted. atleast with most cyclones and floods you get some warning giving you time to get away to a safe place. these poor people wouldn`t have known what hit them.

said on the radio this morning that the tidal surge would hit antarctica tonight. amazing stuff.

the nuc issue is a worry. glad we never went down the nuclear path, ok until something goes wrong.

Smart move, building nuclear plants in one of the most siesmic active areas in the world, unfortunately the people in the city will pay the price for government incompetence.

The axis shift happened after the big boxing day earhquake and tsunami a few years ago.

A good site to view: http://www.ga.gov.au/earthquakes/initRecentQuakes.do

Without going to far off topic, what else was going to power millions upon millions of peoples houses? Whilst an event like this show how dangerous nuclear power can be, it is also one of the cleanest ways of generating power. Can you imagine just how much pollution would be spewed into the atmosphere if they had used coal power stations to create the same amount of energy?

i dont want to get on any peoples bad side but seriously people get a grip , the post was a joke. the world of late has had many a disaster and the world is coming to an end , as far as i know aussies have a sense of humour be it in the worse or greatest of times , bad taste in some peoples views but take it as it was a joke get over the fact it was not serious , serious is what has happened in japan, the whales are surely concerned, but back to being serious , it a great tragic event as well as sri lanka 6 or 7 years ago then again queensland a month ago . australia generally has a sense of humour and most of the time gets us through a tragic event. i cant tell you the amount of messages i recieved through the queensland events not more than a month ago, many from people that lived it . so lighten up people its not the end of the world but was meant to put a bit of light humor on a tragic situation

Aussies always make jokes of a bad situation, it eases the grief and stress involved, unfortunately, there is people on here who can make jokes about bad situations and get away with it and some who can't. Lets all have a big group hug and get on with life!!
