I'm just wondering pearly, where was that camera actually mounted in the car. Is that the steering wheel that is out of focus? Is it facing front or rear?

Is this a system you've setup yourself? I guess so because of your interest in photography.

Cheers guys!

No I don't know the person, don't even know if they are male or female. I only deal with the IT department at the school and they don't know who the car belongs to, so I dare say I won't find out either. I don't really care what happens to them from here. I'm just happy that they didn't get away with it. I can't stand when people damage others property and get away with it. Plus I wasn't so much angry about the car itself, it was more I didn't want to cough up excess for something that I wasn't at fault about. Nothing worse than paying for something you didn't do.

Yes, that's correct. It's not actually mounted just yet, it was just sitting there with a bit of blu-tack in front of the cluster and behind the steering wheel. It's facing rear, towards the drivers side window. It's just a system I'm playing around with myself. As my wife calls me, I'm a geek, so when I get bored I start fiddling with gadgets. Looks like for once it has paid off.

I'm glad to hear everything worked out, the question now is, are you going to buy a bigger SD card so you can record for longer?

That's great news that the SOB got caught. They should have done the right thing and left a note in the first place and owned up right away. If they'd done that they'd be in less hot water now.

Good to see your not out of pocket any money although I'm sure it cost you time dealing with this.

Great outcome!

I know yuppies do buy them just because they are cool, But I use mine at work all the time and it helps so much. I think the website view is so easy to control, makes posting on forums so easy......

I know this is off topic, sorry.

Anyway I have also wondered about setting up a little camera around my car somewhere, But had no idea where to even start with setting it up properly.
Small constantly recording camera, which stores footage for a day or so, at the front and back could also be helpful after a crash if the other driver is at fault, but flat out denies it.
Also could help in road rage situations where someone is tailgating you and getting abusive.
Could be a good investment for someone with a nice car who drives and parks in random places a lot.

I rang the insurance company today, gave them all the details I had and they will retrieve the police report. They gave me my claim no. and told me to go see the panel beater next week.

I will keep updating on how I go.

Glad to hear everything worked out smoothly and quickly. Without the camera, this thread would have been completly different.
Hope for your sake that the damage gets repaired to a high quality without any hassles.
Also, I'm guessing you won't ever get to see who the person was, just let em go? If it was my car, well, lets just say headlights aren't cheap.

Legally that is totally incorrect.
What the actual legislation states is you must not reverse unless safe to do so. As he reversed into a stationary object, it was unsafe to reverse.

Awesome result, was curious before you mentioned about a live feed via wifi, does this mean if someone stole your car you could have footage of them driving your car safely at home on a hard drive some where? Would be a great thing to be able to turn on when at or in a dodgy/suspicious area and you have to leave your car

Where he parked is actually not an issue as was said earlier- one of our friends accidentally clipped a station wagon when reversing his trailer out of his own drive. The wagon was illegally parked and was partially blocking his driveway yet he was held responsible......not that I am condoning illegal parking but obviously it is worth noting.

Yeh pretty much. I could set up a camera to take a picture every few seconds, or minutes and sent it to my server online. Then all I have to do is log in from any computer and look at them. Don't see me doing that any time soon though, I would need to seriously conceal the camera in a location where it can still get a clear shot of the driver. CBF'd doing that right now.

I’m glad that there’s been a good outcome from this.

I have cameras around my house and run two portable HD cams in the truck, and in my car. Once you’ve had these things, it’s hard to live without them.

Sorry to see it happen. The driver who hit you is bloody useless at it and should take the bus from now on. We really do have some totally hopeless drivers in this fine country of ours

Well a bloke hit my wife's Mondeo in Macdonald's car park when my son in law was sitting in it.

The other driver took off.

My SIL took down the rego and gave details to the Police.

Police go to see other bloke who denies it was him.

Police view CCTV footage which shows vehicle of similar description at that time reversing but does not show the actual hit. CCTV footage does not show rego.

Police decide to do nothing.

Contacted insurance coy (NRMA) with details and name and address of other driver. Because Police have not charged the other driver NRMA will not do anything even though other driver is insured with NRMA.

I have complained to the Police Minister and I am still awaiting a response.

I had the car repaired, it was just under $1,000.

I am a Vietnam Veteran living on a veterans disability pension.

I am preparing my own case to take the other driver to court.

I have been a member of NRMA and had lots of cars and houses with NRMA insurance for over 40 years. I am gradually changing my insurances to other companies.

I don't care what it costs to get the other guy in court - I just want to see him squirm!

I dont think he'll be squirming at all.... you have no evidence. You said it yourself. Prepare yourself for a large bill, as the civil court will most likely award costs against you.

So, he's denied it & the video footage shows no hit and no rego.... just a vehicle of "similar description"

I know it's a raw deal, as I have no doubt that he did it..... but move on with life and save what pennies you have.....

Quote:

Just a point of order - the police haven't "decided" to do nothing.... the facts have dictated to them that nothing can be done after the investigation. You said it yourself, you dont have any evidence.... they cant prosecute based on the word of one witness only... and a biased one at that. The brief wouldnt get past the SGT, let alone the prosecutions office.

As I said, move on with life..... you win some, you lose some....

Cav did the police indicate if they looked at the other vehicle for any incriminating damage?

Agree whole heartedly with Dave. As the applicant, the onus will be on you to prove your case. One persons word (you sil) , against another persons word (the other driver), is not going to get you anywhere the "proof" required.

Save the money.

What kind of excuse is that? If you can't reverse it you don't drive it. That's like somebody saying it isn't their fault because of their own incompetence. It makes no sense.

This stuff really ticks me off, especially the nerve to just drive off after damaging another car and being completely aware of it.

Well I have complained to the Police Minister because the constable handling the case told me 3 things which conflicted with what he told my SIL. This also included marks on the other vehicle, and what the CCTV footage show. He told my SIL that the CCTV footage shows the vehicle hitting mine, but he told me it only shows it reversing.

The Traffic Sgt wanted the case reopened and couldn't understand why they didn't go ahead with it.

It comes down to this basic premise, if a guy runs into you and drives away and denies it was him and it's your word against his, you have no case. Now I dunno about you but I don't think this is right.

When I get the minister's response I'll do an FOI and get all the info and decide then if I'll go ahead with it.

I have sent the other guy 'Letters of Demand' for the cost of repair, including a discounted amount if he pays in a certain time, but he has failed to respond.

I'm told by the Police that this happens all the time - guys drive off.

Well I'm taking a stand!
