Ditto, I just purchased a Demo CX-7 for my wife, we traded in her RAV4.
Would have gone for a Ford but nothing suitable in a crossover for the price.

ranger 4x4 smashed mazda bt50 4x4. essentially the same car but the ford badged ones sold more. brand confidence? pricing?

also, i'd say the camry sales are inclusive of the hybrid. i'd say these have been starting to pick up pace a bit. have been seeing a lot more of the hybrid ones around. anyone got any idea of the breakdown between hybrid and non hybrid?

falcon sales aren't fantastic, but commodore sales are trending the same. indicative of overall market trend rather than one model.

Is this a serious question? Neither of those are the reason the Ranger outsells the BT-50. It has to do with Ford being a local manufacturer, so with government fleets, for example, Ranger gets preference over BT-50.

NZ car sales rugby-tackled

On-field success not yet reflected in showrooms as New Zealand goes World Cup mad

7 November 2011

By JACQUI MADELIN in NEW ZEALAND

OCTOBER saw new vehicle sales in New Zealand drop slightly over the same month in 2010, with dealers reporting buyer focus on the Rugby World Cup affecting both private and fleet sales.

Sales were also affected by school holidays, with the terms having been moved this year to coincide with the World Cup, the finals of which were staged in Wellington and Auckland from October 8 to 23.

Sales dropped 3.7 per cent to 7026 units compared with October 2010 – which was itself soft due to a GST tax increase – with passenger car sales down 7.5 per cent to 5428 while commercial vehicles rose 11.7 per cent to 1431.

Used import sales were more heavily impacted, down 9.9 per cent to 6267 units.

Motor Industry Association CEO Perry Kerr said there was no immediate end to the market uncertainty in sight.

“We were disappointed in the overall sales numbers as the Japanese industry has finally got back on its feet following the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami,” he said.

“Unfortunately, production of utes is now taking a hit due to the extensive flooding in Thailand, which has closed the vast majority of parts manufacturers. This has resulted in the vehicle manufacturers ceasing production.

“Looking forward, our expectation is that November will remain weak as buyers’ attention is diverted towards the forthcoming election. We however remain hopeful that total new vehicle sales for the full year will exceed 2010.”

Toyota dominated the month despite dropping 6.4 per cent, selling 1800 vehicles for a 25.6 per cent market share.

Toyota NZ sales and operations manager Steve Prangnell put the reduction down to lower rental numbers, in part due to tsunami-caused shortages.

Mr Prangnell told GoAuto he expects the light truck market – despite strong demand as Christchurch starts rebuilding – to be constricted for two or three months as Thai manufacturers concentrate on restoring their home market before recommencing exports.

Second-placed Ford dropped 23.0 per cent to 711, with Ford NZ managing director Neale Hill reporting slow enquiry rates from the major centres, especially in the World Cup knockout stages.

However, Mr Hill said Ford had sufficient stock of Thai-built vehicles to last until late December and was confident the company’s numbers would improve in November given launch activities around Ranger and Focus.

With strong supply, Hyundai had a big month with 702 sales (up 11.1 per cent), overtaking Holden for third place and finishing just nine units behind Ford for second.

Holden lost 12.7 per cent, primarily due to a big drop in rentals, dropping to fourth behind Hyundai by just seven units.

Mazda fell 9.1 per cent to 472 while Suzuki improved 1.1 per cent to 363 due to strong sales of the Splash light car.

Mitsubishi recorded a 22nd consecutive month of year-on-year improvement, up 6.3 per cent to 353 sales to move ahead of Nissan, which was down 10.8 per cent due to stock shortages.

Nissan NZ managing director John Manley said: “The models we want we can’t get, and we’re going into another round of difficulties with the Thailand situation. Nissan Japan is confident it can restore production very quickly as some components can be sourced from Japan.”

Mr Manley does not expect the November 26 election to impact sales.

“Even if the government changed, there won’t be a drastic shift in anything that has a real impact on business, and 70 per cent of vehicles are purchased for what you could term business use,” he told GoAuto.

Volkswagen rose 9.7 per cent to 203, while Kia beat Honda into the top 10 by 43 cars, up 10.4 per cent to 180 sales despite stock shortages caused by global demand.

Toyota tops the year-to-date tables with 13,626 sales for a 19.2 per cent share followed by Ford and Holden.

Although the HiLux remains the top-selling vehicle for the year, Toyota’s Corolla small car took the top spot for October with 528 registrations, ahead of the Hyundai i30 on 309 and the newly-launched Toyota Yaris with 305.

Mr Manley said he hopes the motoring industry will not have to face any further global challenges in the near future.

“I’ve been in this game a long time and have never seen anything like two major natural disasters, one hard on the heels of the other, and a recession to add another layer,” he told us.

“But we won the rugby, people feel better and summer’s coming, (and) if we get the election out of the way that will translate into more economic activity.”

NZ Sales October 2011:
Brand Sales Share %
Toyota 1800 25.6
Ford 711 10.1
Hyundai 702 10.0
Holden 685 9.8
Mazda 472 6.7
Suzuki 363 5.2
Mitsubishi 353 5.0
Nissan 348 5.0
Volkswagen 203 2.9
Kia 180 2.6

John Elsworth has stated that Holden are making around 300 commodores a day.

http://finance.ninemsn.com.au/newsbu...oduction-in-sa

With an average 21 working days a month, they are making 6300 a month. Doesnt bode well for their stockpiles if they sold 3850 (commodores, utes, caprices) in October, and probably exported a few hundred.

Conclusion - Alot more Holden ads, and the $32990 SV6.

And not to mention the 185 Curze's they are now making, so Curze needs to start selling close to 4,000 each month. Hope the hatch adds more, but can't see them selling close to 4000 each month.. I figure hatch will take away from Sedan manly & don’t see a big increases coming because of hatch... But I could be wrong..

Guys, while we might be disappointed that Ford isn't selling more local products,
I'm so glad that they down balanced and got rid of that XR6 stockpile when they did.

It's much better to be sitting on limited fresh product in demand than have bucket loads
of dollars sitting idle in pre built cars that need to be sold off at huge discounts.

Ford needs to stick to its guns and hold fast on new RRPs but also advertise new std features.
Ford is only building to customer orders in the run up to FG II, there's not much FG1 stock.

Holden is about to have a huge end of year smash and grab sale but that will create a huge
pull forward in sales that will result in a post Christmas apocalypse for them as sales dry up...

Stock...

Mazda doesn't have the same stock numbers as Ford... The new BT50's are only getting to dealers now, and theres alot less runout BT-50's in comparison to how many Ford are still pushing out... I don't think Mazda will ever beat Ford simply because they do not push that segment hard enough....

Yep...

Fords had nearly run out the stockpiles at broady at the end of October...

Holden are nearly all full up apparently, with Cruze / VE's now... Id say Holden will be heading for some down days soon if they cannot clear stock out of the plant.

Cruze is currently outstripping supply, they are selling more than they can build.

Im not suprised... They are selling nearly as many Cruzes as Commodores...

Least the GM workers wont have to worry if Commodore dies, they will have plenty of Cruzes to build for local / export, probably more then Cruze / Commodore Combined if they were to export.

Apparently they are working on paddle shifters on the steering wheel that will be available soon, they copped a fair bit of flak for the shifter buttons. No one liked them.

falcon sales aren't fantastic, but commodore sales are trending the same. indicative of overall market trend rather than one model.

no worries. normally takes about 3 pages for the 'ford is rubbish' dribble to die down anyway.
BT50 can't and won't outsell Ranger as it looks like a smashed crab, with a dropped pie for a rear end. They have even put bullbars on the utes in the new BT50 ads to try to cover up how bad it looks. Thats basically an admission that even Mazda think they look bad IMO.

As for Camry Hybrid, it has absolutely bombed. They aren't even selling half of their projections, and the only ones they do sell go to government fleets only because they paid for the thing to go into production.

The car, which has been the number one selling car in the country for 15 years, slipped behind hatchbacks from Toyota, Volkswagen and Mazda, as well as the Toyota HiLux ute in the October sales race. It is believed to be the lowest sales ranking the car has held since its introduction in 1978.
Answer your question about the Commodore numbers...

Had a good look at one of these the other day at work. They look worse in real life.

Not really, they're making 185/day which for a 21 day week works out to about 4,000 so maybe
stockpiling 1,000 odd Hatches ahead of launch. If not, 2800 sales last month is a bit of a worry...

With an average 21 working days a month, they are making 6300 a month. Doesnt bode well for their stockpiles if they sold 3850 (commodores, utes, caprices) in October, and probably exported a few hundred.

Conclusion - Alot more Holden ads, and the $32990 SV6.
heard on the radio this arvo that production of cruze wagon is about to start and that will add around 50 units/day, bringing local production to around 400? (could have been 450) units/day.

looks like they build about 2 commodores to each cruze.

Yep but is that complete number way too many cars for AUS market?

In a 21 day month that works out to over 10,000 cars built,
what are they, stockpiled Caprice PPV or loads of excess stock?

The cynic in me does say that the quote about the 480 cars a day was from a Holden person, so firstly we must determine if it is true, or just another "we are the top car maker in australia" give us more government money. Or they are sitting on a whole load of excess cars.

Like most have said before, its very hard to rebalance a line, so chances are that Holden have been over producing for a little while now, and things hit home even worse when they have a bad sales month. But it appears Holden knew it was on the cards, the same month they introduce the 5 years warranty / 5 years free road side assist is the same month they had a bad month for the commodore.

They are more likely to predict a bad fleet month, than a bad private sales month. Did they know fleets orders were going to be bad in October, thus had to entice the private buyers with the deals. Camry had a pretty good month (above the norm), did these go to fleets at the expense of the commodore.

The problem for commodore is that everyone who took out a three years lease on one in 2006 and 2007 and 2008, is now on their second VE. Even if the VF arrives in 2014, alot of people are going to be stuck with a VE for 9 years. Most marriages dont even last that long, and they cost alot more.

The latest photo on Nearmap is 17 October and reveals probably 1500 cars parked up at the Elizabeth plant. Conservative estimate.

It's true all right...

The line rate has been at 430 a day since last November, when Holden returned to a second shift in preparation for the Cruze sedan and the VE Series II Commodore after the company scaled back to a single shift and 340 cars a day in April 2010, putting factory workers on reduced hours and pay in an effort to avoid retrenchments.

The increased rate to 480 – which comprises 185 Cruze variants – is still well below the normal two-shift capacity of 620, but Holden said this week that the small car, coupled with large-car-based Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV) exports to the US, had led to 300 new manufacturing jobs and, with the Australian-designed Cruze hatch, increased in-house component production.

The company says it has also created more than 200 new jobs in the Australian parts sector as a direct result of the Cruze program, and is buying an extra $100 million worth of components a year from Australian suppliers.
A 21 work day month = 10,000 cars, so I really wonder what is happening with:
1) Local commodore stock numbers (the last thing Holden needs is excess stock)
2) Caprice PPV stockpile numbers (Sales in USA are extremely poor)
3) Cruze numbers...(there's a big assumption that Cruze hatch will increase sales)
