the AU could have been good if they had of finished designing it. they look like crap but with a bit more work could have looked nice. it seems like it was rushed to the market instead of refining the design to make it look less cheap.
the interior is the biggest let down. cheap hard plastic everywhere inside it.

Believe it or not, the XD-F was first being designed in 1976 and the EA in the early 1980's when the X series was outselling the Commie 1.7-1.

Some visionaries at Ford Australia knew these happy days wouldnt last!

The EA was supposed be based on this european car of the year:-

But it didnt have enough guts, wasnt big enough, only came in a hatchback and couldnt be made into a wagon.

Back in the early 1980's wagons had a whopping 25% share of the market.

And to give you an idea of the power of ford in 1977 it had over 50% market share of the entire world auto industry!

This modern histroy of Ford is good stuff to learn about.

And Im still not afraid to say, in my humble view, that the current Falcon XR6 is one of the best cars ever made. Its the cats whiskers, it should be outselling everything.

E series Falcons were an absolute bread winner for Automotive workshops Australia wide. They fell to bits with such regularity,leaked from every orifice inside and out, and wouldnt work properly unless rebuilt contsantly from the Bridgestones up. I loved fixing them, they love a good undercarriage steam clean, a set of ball joints, pads and discs all round, pull the head and radiator, shocks all round, regas the aircon, and we`ll see you next year. On the other hand, my VN got nicked again, dunno what they did but I`ve put a couple of rear skins on it and its goin OK!

Golden years.

ball joints, pads and discs and radiator... 20 years later and they couldn't fix these things on BA Falcon. At least they fixed the head gasket.

You are right about the AU, compared to the BA...the AU made the BA look like a Camry.


But the FG is leaps and bounds above what ford done with the AU and BA... little things like black plastic on the door frames, meaning that you can't see the colour of the body in the interior (like on the Au)...

I had an S Pac too and suffered from a fan belt snapping. Only thing that ever went wrong with it. Loved that car.

Old man had the MPI Ghia. Never had any issues with it from new.
