I used the hedger attachment on my 51.7cc whippersnipper/bit of everything today. Dbf did correct me earlier, 0.7cc makes all the difference.
So i bought it because my grass was stupid long after weeks of rain and it was cheap and had a slasher blade. So my hesitations were, cheap, ozito and 2 peice shaft.
Man shopping, the internet said bunnings had them in stock, isle x row y. Well none were on that shelf, asked an employee who said theres 1 left up the front. So im not the only idiot to buy one.
So the slasher blade, reason i bought it, was disappointing, needs to be hit with a grinder for a bit of sharp. As a whipper snipper, once you put decent line in it, is good. The pole saw even with the extention, for a 10 inch bar, that exceeded my somewhat low expectations, blew my expectations out of the water. The hedger attachment, never used a hedger before, but it appears to work well. The things heavy, but didnt bog at all. Did the job easily. So for $170 i cant complain. It is only for domestic use. Has an odd fuel mix being 1:40, but whilst its hard to pull the cord, it starts easy as and having a clutch, theres no reason to turn it off mid job.

While I have never used one, I watched one of those slasher blades attachments in use, they sound super nasty.

I have a Stihl Combi power head with the hedger, trimmer and edging attachment.

I mainly bought this to run the hedger attachment but I found it very taxing to use, poorly balanced and hard on the shoulders. The chainsaw attachment would have come in handy the other day though.

I ended up getting a battery powered pole hedger, which is much better balanced and lighter overall.

Slasher blades do sound nasty, kind of like they want to cut you down at the knees and call you a tripod. Or cut your face off.
But they work.
Still like it but not 100% all about the multi doodle. Its like a handyman, can do most things, but isnt that good at anything.

The season has finally changed over here with the grass and the mowing load starting to slow down.

We're still busy though preparing for the anticipated rain to come.
Over summer we try to keep the moisture in the greens. They're moisture probed daily and watering can be controlled to the 1/2mm using a formula of existing moisture, temperature and the corresponding evaporation rate. Problem is we can't control the rain leading to waterlogging, fungus and disease.

With this in mind coring commenced this week. We're using 10mm hollow tines at a depth if 70mm. This will allow the water to drain past the root zone and the hollow tines will relieve compaction from a busy summer of play.

We're trying a new tool called the Nordic plow that drags the cores from the green cutting down alot of labour removing them by hand.
The olny downside is that the apprentice has been scoring points on me by calling me Mr Plow and singing the song "Mr Plow is a loser and I heard he is a boozer" Now I resent that I am not a loser

Here's the corer in action, it was a pre dawn start to stay ahead of play.

and in the later hours of the morning.

Another job I'm looking forward too, being in a regional area, is burning off the wood piles. It'll be roast potatoes for smoko on those days...

So im going to say a slow decline over many years is why i didnt notice and now happy as larry with my mowers performance. So 6 or 7 uses after cleaning up the underside of the deck, pretty much everything makes the catcher. Not like when it was caked with crud. Before, yeah it started 1st time everytime, but even catcher empty it would blow some clipping about, but ⅔ of a catcher and it would blow all the clippings, it was done. So spending 5 minutes to hose it out after years. Well, hindsight is a ***** of a thing, but lesson learnt, im going to keep an eye of crud build up. Saves me time sweeping up too.

Was it the lack of noise or the fact you dont need to start it, or splash yourself with fuel filling it?

Noise what ? It made more noise than a 3408 Jake braking down Mt Ousley.

OK, a few years ago, somehow my son was able to talk me into swapping him my good quality Victa mower for one of these...

https://www.bunnings.com.au/yardking...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

After a few years of abuse it actually still runs OK but everything around it is breaking. Also the catcher (it doesn't have a mulcher) is very small. I don't mind the small cut size as it is used for the areas that the ride-on can not reach.

Anyway, I'm about to pull the trigger on one these...

However...

While I was at the shop the sales guy showed me one of these...

Does anyone own one? What are they like?

With that model of Honda, a couple of things to consider.

-These are made for the US market where they like to cut much higher than we do. The lowest setting is 27mm, much higher than what we expect. If you have Fescue, that might be ok.

-Take note that these have an adjuster for each wheel, meaning four adjustments are needed each time to move the cutting height.

-The deck design and gearbox location hamper efficient catching on everything other tipping bone dry lawn.

-The bar blade on these is more suited to mulching, and makes bending you crankshaft more likely when accidentally hitting debris.

I have had this sort of American style mower before, I dumped the thing pretty quickly because it just would not cut and catch cleanly. I say all this because for the price, it was deeply disappointing that such a highly featured machine was virtually useless.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be a Debbie Downer, just don't want you to get stuck with a dud.

The yellow Cubcadet is generally for clearing scrub or overgrown weeds on a farm, for cutting lawns neatly they would be out of their depth.

If you are keen on a Honda, look a little further up the range to the HRU19. These are the Australian assembled mowers with more appropriate deck design and cutting heights. These are 19 inch alloy base with a 166cc OHC engine.
https://powerequipment.honda.com.au/...n/mowers/hru19

Returning to Victa, a Corvette 400 or 400SP would be a good choice too. These are 19 inch steel bodies with a 163 cc engine.
https://www.victa.com/au/en_au/produ...vette-400.html
https://www.victa.com/au/en_au/produ...tte-400sp.html

For Masport, I would also aim for an alloy base as the steel bases are weak. Although a 19 inch alloy is starting to get a bit expensive. At such price, I would rather a Victa Mustang. Both of these have a very powerful 190cc engine, I have had a few of these and they are bullet proof.
https://masport.com.au/outdoor-garde...l-s19-combo-ic
https://www.victa.com/au/en_au/produ...stang-850.html

Considering a slasher caught your eye, consider a Masport Utility or Big Bob as both of these can finish down a bit better.

My yard is huge. I live on 5 acres. The push mower is generally for those places where the ride-on will not reach (I have a 50 inch Toro). Generally I use the push mower for about two hours to mow everything (I don't always mow the whole place in one go) but as mentioned, I use that toy mower.

You're not being a Debbie Downer at all. I appreciate the feedback.

I live on an acreage that is semi-rural. The cadet would be used for going around the fences etc. I would still have the whipper snipper for around closer to the house.

That's interesting what you say about the Honda(s). I want to buy a quality mower and buy it from a reputable place with some after sales back up. I'll have a closer look when I get home tonight. The other mower the person showed me was this...

https://www.sconeoutdoors.com.au/pro...l-drive-mower/

A little more money and more features that I don't need. The person did say that the Honda would suit my needs more.

That Toro is in the same boat as the Honda HRN216PKU that you initially posted. They are for US style lawns. I so WANTED to buy one of those Toro's as they are very well featured. I ended up a few years later with something similar and regretted every second of the purchase.

Again, I don't want to be a downer, but I just know you will be disappointed with it.

I'm not sure of your budget, but here a couple that I would consider durable, quality machines that will suit your larger property. These are generally commercial machines but they are going to outlive the Toro's of the world.

-Bushranger 53A Series. This is my main mower these days, 21 inch alloy base with 3-speed shaft driven gearbox. I have the Honda engine, but they do offer a cheaper Loncin 196cc option too. These are built like a tank! Even have cast alloy wheels.

https://bushrangerpe.com.au/browse-p...er-pu53ah6imsp

Victa Commercial 21" - These are an alloy base with 21 inch cut with a great cutting height range. Fitted with the big 190cc Briggs. Single speed belt drive gearbox.

https://www.victa.com/au/en_au/produ...850-ic-sp.html

-Victa Mulchmaster 560 - This one is left of field, but would be ideal for you. These do not catch but can be used in mulching mode or side discharge. Again, the grunty 190cc Briggs, a good height range and a multi-speed belt driven gearbox. For rougher areas, use it in side discharge, for more manicured areas use the mulching function. I have had one of these for about 7 years and its been brilliant.

https://www.victa.com/au/en_au/produ...aster-560.html

The two Victa's, especially the Mulchmaster, will likely need to be ordered in for you. They are worth it though.

I know these three are more expensive, but from what I have used them for in my business, I couldn't be happier with them. The Mulchmaster has been used and abused but is still as good as when I bought it new.

I don't really have a budget per se. I suppose up to $1000 but would spend extra for the right mower. I would rather spend extra and be happy rather than spend less and be cursing it each I mow the lawn for the next 5 years.

If I was happy to settle for OK, I would just go and buy a Victa at bunnings.

Having said the above, I do want one with a catcher. The wife doesn't like the grass being left close to the house as she gets hay fever (basically within a metre or two from the front veranda where she sits each afternoon).

So in an attempt to do the nice thing for my brother. He lives in a town house. Tiny backyard thats a jungle because of neglect.
So looked up the bunnings to see if i can get another of the 51.7cc ozito things i have taken a liking to. The bunnings dont sell them anymore. So i googled the ebays, no dice. Only parts. Man alive i cracked the biggest domestic diy erection when i seen the edger attachment for this cheap as thing. Yep, buy now.
Dunno if its any good, but still, should beat the crap out of sharpening a spade with a grinder and doing edges manually.

OK...

First of all, I want to thank DFB FGXR6 for all of his help. If it wasn't for him, I would have ended up with a mower that I would have been very unhappy with.

I ended buying one of these

It's a Honda HRU196. I was originally looking a HRN216 model but I couldn't find any positive reviews on any site within professor google. I then spoke with DFB FGXR6 and he pointed out exactly why I would not be happy with the HRN216.

I looked up the HRU19 and while more expensive, it was a better mower and received plenty of positive reviews.

I went down to the local mower shop and ended up with the HRU196 for not much extra.

Just a photo of it simply because this will be the last time ever that it will be this clean.

DFB FGXR6 will appreciate this pic. It became the first thing that I looked at when I looked at different mowers. It is the difference between stopping your mower every 30 seconds (so to speak) to unclog it and only having to stop when the catcher is full.

Once again, thanks to DFB FGXR6 and I can assure you, I will never ever think again that mowers are all just the same or a lawn mower is just a lawn mower.

Brilliant! Jealous you get the red Honda engine cover, all non-Honda products with that engine seem to come with the black version.

The full width rear chute is very important if you are regularly cutting thicker, lusher growth.

For reference, this is the chute on my Bushranger -

This is on the boarder line for the work I do, the horrid John Deere I had was half that size though. There are some limitations with that rear chute, it generally means if I have a very overgrown lawn to deal with, I'm either having to do it in two passes at two different heights, or use another machine. The durability of the chassis and stout gearbox means I make it work.

Let me know what you think of that engine.

I had several mowing jobs today, meaning I got to play with my toys.

The first lawn of the day was done with the Mulchmaster. I think my point has been made now!

The next few jobs I decided to use old number one.......

I then started on a new job which will include regular lawn mowing and garden maintenance. The lawn is freshly laid Kikuyu (oh joy), it's been down about two months now and really needs the water backed off. I used the Bushranger on this job, I needed the machine to do the work for me on this thick stuff.

The garden I had a hand in selecting and selling the plants for, with the physical landscaping done by a contractor. I'm a bit annoyed they did not install weed mat on this job, a crazy omission and and something that will result in further maintenance bills going forward for the owner. This is a case of spending a little more in the beginning to save spending much more in the future. I bet the owner doesn't know my hourly rate for general garden maintenance! This is another commercial job that will be able to bit into my weekend (Sunday) schedule, filling a couple of gaps in my work load.

Recieved the new edger attachment for my whipper snipper today. Sucks that its raining. I gave it a small test rip and from that i am keen to put it to proper use.
I also got a new spool for the whipper snipper head. Main reason was this one has a metal bump knob not a dodgey plastic one that the thing came with.
The new spool came with no instructions but spruked quick line changes. It is actually really simple. Line the arrows with the holes, poke the line in 1 side, pull what you need out the other then push the bump knob and wind the line in.

Great machine mate, is yours the engine brake model? The lever handle is different to mine which is blade brake.
The main thing to keep an eye on is the catcher can drop off, the metal edges of the catcher flap can bend out, reducing grip on the catcher. I bang mine with a hammer to keep it on.

Mine did that too.

The blade brake would be handy to have, being showered in clippings get old. For more occasional use rather than daily use, it's less important and another maintenance item.
