yep that's me. i was at the washplant at south blackwater back then when QCT bought it from CSR, i don't remember 50 odd houses being burnt to the ground by irate unionists, but it sounds impressive 20 years later, a bit like other anti union myths |

Currently in the control room in training at north goon. Big difference from being on the longwall. More skills to add to the resume.

Are the good times over for Australia ? With falling commodity prices things may get very interesting here........... A mate who works underground as a fitter, got called in with his crew. $26,000 pay cut immediately or no job..............

Yeap plenty of cuts all around but the wages are coming back to earth a little bit. If I started to state some of the "bonuses" some sites get for doing essential what is there job without stuffing up then I think most would be a bit shocked.
No other industry gets/got these...but the demand was there to get people to work when it was booming so companies could pay it...just not the case now so one would hope people would understand that. Problem is alot of these guys finance themselves to the hilt so any cuts are hard..but thats not really the mine owners issue. The country is going to be in some major pain for the next couple of years. The auto industry effect hasn't really happened yet either.

Yeah, its a hard industry to get into across the board not just in mining, seems like everyone wants experienced people but no one offers entry level jobs into the field.

That seems like a really low number compared to what you see for other jobs. If I was applying for a job with 400 applicants, I'd consider that pretty good odds. |

Working as a instro/ sparky at roxby. 9 on. 5 off. Go to adelaide on days off. Love the lifestyle, the pay is ok for what i do. Been there 8 years now. Never mortgaged to the hilt, save 50% of my wage for a rainy day. Made it through the gfc, clark shaft collapse and now the river of gold has stopped flowing i am happy to stay there for a few years yet. I agree it is a tough industry to get into. But i think it is even harder to get out of in my opinion. I cant imagine working 8 hrs a day, five days a week now. Never easy on relationships though.

Olympic dam is the most frustrating place I have ever worked, luckily, I only go there for the occasional shutdown. But the $ are there if you can get a start.

Agree with you both pottery beige and black 13. It can be frustrating at times. The old saying why be difficult when it is so much easier to be impossible comes to mind alot!!!

York havent been here in a few years. Olympic Dam is a pretty hard place to work but you just need to roll with it and take the yes sir / no sir / thank you sir attitude....... or just be a good footy player.......

Not at all good news for the area. Heard runours that there may be cuts but not that bad. Hope the locals find work soon, and not a sign of things to come either across the industry.

Mining is on a big down turn, oil and gas is where it's at. My son does FIFO two on two off for 225k a year.

all sounds good but ive already looked into it and most oil n gas rigs don't have much need for a dirty ole digger/dozer/loader driver out in the ocean!!

Why is that a shock to some? Not hard to do what is required since we are all getting paid.

Mining really is easy especially if you can get a maintenance type gig. Some of my guys can be at work for an 11 hour shift and do 10 minutes of actual work.... They need to be there though as when the poo hits the fan they need to jump. Some guys just cant hack the safety and the rules etc as they dont understand why it is run that way. The record for quitting so far is half a day.... Maybe I said something scary LOL....
