An oil change, blades or a spark plug wont fix rust. They wont fix a lot of things.

Did she remind you of exactly how much you spent on them, too?

I can believe the blades lasting, your area is quite lush mostly.

Before I get stuck into a full teardown of the new-to-me Mac chainsaw, can anyone advise if the clutch side is keyed to the crank or just a friction fit?

So its been a couple months since i got the edger attachment for my whippersnipper/multi doodle. Maybe used it 2 or 3 times. So very much a 1 off use kind of purchase. But its made making the place look good so much easier having clean cut edges. Quick run down the sides with the whippersnipper, do the guts with the mower.
Yeah, its low grade domestic equipment, but the $86 edger attachment works good enough and im not upset about buying it.

i had something similar ...... stopped using it due to me cracking the shiiits with the fuel/line side of things - so went electric & only have to worry about the line 'disappearing'

bought an edger from Aldi a few years ago now [4 stroke] ...... only hiccup was the fuel line 'perishing' otherwise all good. it uses a flat steel blade of which i can make up as bunnings no longer sell blades for it!.

Have had the Mustang 750iS for nearly 5 weeks now, it's been getting plenty of use at home and on jobs.

The starter battery was fully charged after assembly and was sitting on half charge before popping it on the charger this afternoon. Pretty happy with that, I could have stretched it further but that's not how I roll.

Edger doodle and the whippersnipper attachments are different. By edger i mean the the vertical spinny blade to cut along the concrete.
So the edger attachment isnt the complete tool, just the 'power head' you put on the end of the shaft of the whippersnipper. So saves needless extra equipment/space. Considering realistically you dont need to edge very often at all for personal domestic use it kinda makes sense. Also, from personal experience, the longer you leave small capacity garden equipment sit, the more maintenance is required.
My 51.7cc ozito, heavy as it is has been really good. For a cheapy it starts 1st time every time. It has a hedge trimmer attachment that i never use, a 10" pole saw attachment that the 1 time i did use it was handy, the whippersnipper attachment which is straight shaft that i like and the edger. Only thing i have really changed on it was the plastic line spool. That thing just didnt bump too well and the bump knob was plastic. Also it was 2.4mm line. So i ebayed a replacement line spool that has a metal bump knob and takes 3mm line. Plus its a quick respool one which is really easy.

I would appreciate feedback re. typical blade height above lower edge of skirt. What ever type of rotary mower but in particular a side delivery slasher type machine.

Side dishcarge machines are brilliant.

A little Victa Utility 460 would be good for smaller spaces, very light too -

https://www.victa.com/au/en_au/produ...60-725exi.html

I had a Masport 530 Utility with the big 850 engine, it was a beast -

Also look into Bushranger Utilities -

Kohler -

DFB FGXR6 Thanks for your timely reply, however I am not seeking to buy a mower, I already have one. I only want to know a typical distance the blades are above the bottom edge of the skirt.
The reason is if this dimension is significant the mower is hard to push when on the lowest height (cutting a lawn for example) and if it were too small it would not offer much protection to the operator when slashing a jungle at the maximum height setting.

Just spent 2 full days on a mates bush block in halls gap, clearing fallen trees and branches. I took my petrol huski chainsaw and my 530iPT5 huski battery pole saw. I used the petrol one for a total of 1 hr across the 2 days, if that doesn’t show you how good the battery one is I don’t know what will.
Some takeaways are:
-cutting logs at ground level with a polesaw is so much easier, you are 2 meters away from all the wood chip spray.
-battery power doesn’t scare away the wildlife like petrol (it was a land for wildlife property).
-I ran it in eco mode most of the time, the slower speed keeps the chain cooler.
-it’s only a 250mm blade, but I was cutting gum logs 40cm across, from both sides.
What an absolute beast the husqvarna is, I’m in love.

So firstly, get your retic or watering tested and working. Most retic shops give out catch cups for free so use these to check for uniformity wet/dry spots and work out your timing for a 10mm drink which is the usual rate for watering and washing in product.

On to the products, depending on your soil start with an application of wetta soil granules, followed by 10mm of water.
A week later apply a general fertilizer and another 10mm. This will put the plant in good health before the stress of renovation.
I know the blokey thing to do would be to chuck out a bag of each until it looks like its just snowed But, please, work out your square meterage and stick to the recommended rates. You're just throwing money away otherwise...

A couple of weeks later you'll be ready to go.
Generally you'll get away with a low mow and rake to remove thatch.
Vertimow if you've got heavy thatch or if the mower chokes when you mow.
Core with a machine or punch holes with a fork if the soils compact or if theres a thatch problem. This will help with water penetration and get the soil bacteria working to help break down future thatch.

Hope that helps get those lawns started for summer.
We're making preparations at work for this years reno's. One of the steps we'll be doing this year is hollow tining the greens. This is quite a messy process with the cores being ejected onto the surface. Heres a pic of a cored fairway to give you an idea.

Cleanup usually takes a team of 4 about an hour a green to rake, shovel and sweep the spoils. Times this by 22 greens over 2 days it makes for some longs days of work.

There is a solution though, drumroll.... Introducing the core harvester.

This particular machine had been abandoned after the previous users claimed it didn't work.
We've had a couple of shed days due to thunder storms of late so it was dug out and commissioned for service. After a check over it was attached to a tow rig. So far so good, the electrics and hydraulics all worked so it was taken for a test run.

At this point it was confirmed, the machine wouldn't pick up a thing.
We set about playing with the roller height and brush angle but still it wouldn't pick anything up.

The brush is heavily shrouded so we decided to remove these to have a closer look at what the brush was doing. On start up we were greeted by a shower of cores being fired from the front of the machine. This wasn't right they're meant to go backwards into the hopper.
Its at that moment we had a sinking feeling, could we have hooked the hydraulic couplings up back to front?
With them swapped over the brush was now working the right way but the other hydraulic functions lift, dump and tow bar swivel were now back to front.

After putting them back the way they were the hoses at the brush drive were swapped over and bingo everythings working like it should.

It took a couple of hours work on a stormy day but this machine will be worth its weight in gold come renovation time.

It’s good to have a day where you can stop chopping the wood, and sharpen the axe!
We don’t get enough thinking time these days, and thinking is often NOT rewarded by management.

I scumbagged my mate yesterday. His mum lives next door to me, was helping her re pot plants. Anyhow, she pays for her lawns to be done, however, that mob never does the strip between the boundary fence. So her house to the fence is only 4 to 5 foot wide. Its just the bit no one goes, it has the meter box and hot water unit. Cant run a mower through there due to obstacles.
If i made the offer to my mate and if his mum wasnt there, it would be a flat out no. But, thats why i scumbagged him. Offered to lend my whipper snipper, his mum was appreciative, so my mate gave me the look of dissaproval.
Realistically it took my mate 4 minutes to do a pretty good job knocking out 2 foot tall grass and weeds.
What really impressed me is i always say it'll start. My whipper snipper always does when no one is watching me. When i handed it to my mate and said it'll start he called bs. 2nd pull it was running. Not bad for a 2 stroke that has not been started for 5 weeks.

Cheers FTE
The course was on the verge of bankruptcy with only 3 staff left so a 'whats the point' culture crept in and alot of machines were just parked up as they failed or in this case needed some gremlins sorted out.
We're back up to 7 motivated staff now.

Green coring starts next week, over the past month we've had a soil and leaf tissue analysis done and have been applying foliar fertilizers based on the results and deficiencies aswell as making some pH amendments.
We'll start with a light vertimow, followed by coring, sweeping, adding compost to known dry areas, topdressing, brushing and lastly a granular fertilizer.

Its amazing how quick they come back from a major renovation like this, we expect them to be ready for tournament play a month later.
I get some pics as we go next week.

Love your course storey bringing it bank to good playing condition……..
Great to hear of the growing staff and enthusiasm that’s the key.

Sydney courses have began green coring and top dressing but obviously climate here is already turning and temps starting to warm lightly.
As a player you dislike it haha but got to be done for the better.

Yes please keep the updates and pics coming ! I admire the work done at courses.
