Once in SA, however... it was thick with VYs more than any other older car. This time counted more VYs > VEs > VF's s
VF's seemed thin on the road, at 10 years old.

Little seen, least on my drives. Little wonder we didn't need dual cabs back yonder, these just appear humungous on the road esp when sitting lower than standard. Daily commute Northern Connector ADL...good nic but passes the 'straight panel' test when passing.

Yes, for sure. Had to work on Yalata once, yep indeed.

But in this case I noticed the VYs once you get within about 300 of Port Augusta, and continuing down past Keith and across the border. We chose the Western Hwy this time as quicker but by Odin the poor driving with high beam usage! Enough to anger Thor it was!

Yes, the Territory was returning, 2007 model. So one of the oldest cars on the road! Still tracks straight as, inline 6 still got it. We stopped to record 333,333 on the odo between Cocklebiddy and Madura.

Family VY is still going and perfect and buttery smooth on city and town acceleration - so I'll guess VZ? Drove those new but can't remember if they did that.

Have invested in spare CKP for that one now. I'm beginning to think it is the most reliable of the lot. Having had Barra plastic pulley for power steer (iirc) go on son's XR6.

If only they made those, or Barra, or AUII new now. Sigh. I'm still stumped for a real replacement. If I want to drive ultra long distance highway miles and want full time AWD. The Toyota's are choice de rigueur currently and it's 100K to get a 300 series, or more. Prados in the 80s or 90s and for that you get that 2.8D... no petrols on them, if you want a petrol cruiser it's the 160K+ Lexus twin turbo 3.5. For low 40's it's a Mazda with fwd, for mid 60's you can get their new AWD inline 6 with RWD bias... hmmm. Dual cab based wagons exist I guess too but while the mind considers the flesh is hardly vertical.

That's a good point - humungousness helps for sleeping.

We took the VY back over some weeks ago, returning it and the sleeping with foam mattress on the back was awesome - flat bed, sooo long, really comfortable after a day at the wheel. Plenty of space in rear footwell for toolkit/parts etc. What a perfect car for touring/sleeping in.

Coming back in the Terry, it was pretty good, but not as good. The mattress was a little more squished as of shorter wheelbase, the gap between middle seats and rear seat footwell tended to sag the mattress at about waist height. Nothing that couldn't be improved with a bit of carpentry.

Waking up overlooking SA ocean cliffs, priceless.

And yes a caravan is more comfortable to sleep in, but then you have to tow the damn thing. Been there, done that in my 20's for work. Not quite yet ready to grey nomad the things.

Probably the most awesome setup would be like an old HJ panelvan with the sleeping area in the back, just climb down into the front, with better headspace. Failing that, the VY is pretty good. I guess you could #vanlyfe but then you would be #vanlyfing.

Subaru WRX is the only option sub $60K that's not AIDS-on-wheels and is AWD, you'll need to change your own gears though because the auto is AIDS-on-wheels CVT.

WRX Wagon doesn't come in manual so forget it.

Rule out the CKP because if that ****s the bed it won't even start.

If it's a VZ then the fix is send it to Sims metal because it's the 3.6L boat anchor.

Gotta really watch out for AIDS and looks like it's everwhere in new vehicle market at present

I've read they aren't as reliable a gearbox as one might expect from Suby, too.
