Only authorised people are allowed to have phones, which is mainly staff/management. Our guys would just about be flicked if they got caught. Google mining mayhem.

Basically as Polyal said. Reduces any incidents being released offsite. I don’t agree with it but not going to lose my job over it.
It’s funny that some contractors can have theirs in the crib room while permanent fitters sitting next to them can’t use theirs. I want mine for my music & podcasts since our radio reception in the machines are generally rubbish

My son-in-law is a drill operator.
Applied for a job (sent resume, referees, etc) with Rio in WA on Wed last week had a job (subject to usual stuff) next morning. Starts in 3 weeks. Could be of interest to WA peeps or those willing to fifo.

I have no problem someone using it sitting at the digger or crib hut. Honestly won’t surprise me if our drivers licence ends up being like that in the future. Get caught, lose it.

Getting caught is a sackable offence... I wasn't part of the ERT team then, but I am now. So I am allowed to carry my phone on me, but taking photos or videos is still not allowed except in emergencies... Cheers |

I'm looking for some advice from those of you who work FIFO and/or in the mines.
My brother-in-law, who is currently a upholsterer, is looking at making a career change. He wants yo get out of what he is doing but is concerned that going back to school to get a trade at his age will take too long and/or cause a financial strain. I jokingly suggested that he should get himself a job in the mines, FIFO. He actually seemed pretty interested. So, what sort of work and pay could an unskilled person get? To get into driving, say a dump truck for eg, what quals would he need to have, what would it cost to get those quals, and how long? Is there somewhere (websites, etc) he could do some research and get more information about what is available and how to go about pursuing it further? Appreciate any assistance you can provide.

They are always chasing people in Broken Hill but it's residential not FIFO. They seem to employ people with no experience because they can't get anyone else. It is a good option to get into the industry.

Thanks but I'm not with Corestaff. That's just who they put all the new starters on with now.
That's until they work out if you are any good anyway. Last edited by naddis01; 14-11-2019 at 07:44 PM. |

I dont work in the mines I work for the mining company's. Consult on plant and equipment failures and breakdown. Always plenty of monkey abusing the equipment. And fitters installation issues. And manufacturing defects.
With the way WA mining is I can work till Iam 100.

I did drive a 785 truck as well as front-end loader and excavator for a year back in 93. Worked on the bomb crew as well. Operated a drill rig.
