I am due for a new mountain bike , and have been deciding whether to go 27.5 or 29 dually .. Rode both the 29 er in a hard tail and dually , and I felt much quicker in the dually , as I was prepared to attacked the course , with little respect the ruts and roots , and small jumps , however , in the tighter corners , cambered or not, I found in both 29 er's , they really need to be steered around , rather that let your weight and natural position help you around . On the 26 , you could enter the corner blind , and still have sufficient time within the corner for adjustments and exist . However, on the 29er, you re in faster , and once on a line , it's a little harder or unnatural to alter your line .
Anyone had any experience with the 27.5 against the 29er ?

I find the 27.5 seems more nimble and the 29 a bit cumbersome but really there ain't much in it. The rider will make more difference than the wheel size.

I'm no expert but did lots of reading on the subject before buying and am still happy with my choice after 6 months of riding the 27.5.

Magpie, without riding the 27.5 , my reading suggests the same as it is closer to the 26. However, I just love the 29 er , in terms of speed and ease in which you're able to hold a higher speed . When I demo the 29 er dually, I did so against a rider on a 26, and found it so much easier to hold his back wheel, the only draw back , was riding blind into corners, met I stuffed up pretty much every exist , as i found you had to be my aggressive with the 29 er , it feels heavier at slower speeds , when you get the turns and corners wrong .
I will have to demo a 27.5 and see whether I can get one and back it up with another ride on the 29 er.

That would be the best way to do it.

Also think what most of your riding will be, wide open flowing stuff will suit the 29, if your going to be doing anything slightly technical and tighter stuff or lots of single track then 27.5 might be better.

Have you googled 29 vs 27.5, there's a wealth of info out there.

Well, whilst my road bike is in pieces getting a makeover..... ( pics to come when done, thanks to GT pilot its getting a complete upgraded Ultegra groupset makeover.

Doh!! I should have pinged you. We didn't go out as planned so I've wasted most of the day failing in setting up a new pc for the family. :(

Rob, just the Best of All Lookout part would be a good climb for you as it would achieve your goal for the elevation gain that you wanted when you were here.

hmmm, nearly 1000vm in about 20km. looks perfect

how does it compare to O'reilly's? slightly shorter and taller?

would definitely need to stick the bike in the car for that one. bit of a stretch to ride there from greenbank.... unless i fit panniers and some overnight gear

Shorter by about 5km but more vm and steeper, that is why O'Reilly's is a cat 1 and Best of All is a HC climb.

I have mapped out from my house as well, that is 209 km with over 4000m vm.

Funny you should say that, ive been off bikes for a while and didnt know about the different wheel sizes, i was talking to salesman and he said soon as you ride both you will know, im like yeah surely its not that obvious. I rode a 29er Focus superbud. Soon as i rode it i didnt like it at all, hence the 27.5 Trance.

Did 1100m in 29km on the MTB last Monday, well actually the 1100m was in 15km, then the last half downhill back to my gate.

It's a bit hilly where I live. As in from my gate turn right up my road and I can do 300m in the first 4km, or like above 1100m in a little under 15km.

Well - he did the same thing last year and didnt figure in any of the major run up races to the TDF in 2014 or this year.......

Also - Froome's result at the Criterium du Dauphine shows he is a fairdinkum chance for next month.

So I reckon those 2 have a real good shot at it - pending crashes etc...

Today was the Brissie to Bay 100km ride I've been building up to for the last 6 weeks - my first 100 km ride; and was it great!

Well, apart from having to be there at 5.45am for a 6.15 start... standing around in lycra in the stifling 11 degree heat until I was able to start at 7am. There were about 5000 riders taking part in the 100km route, and the starts were staggered in groups. But after that it was non-stop for the first 24km, with traffic control, all the way out to Wynnum, on the bay, and down to Cleveland Point. There were rest points with water and fruit available, but I had my home made energy bars (Thanks to the GCN Youtube channel) and electrolyte drink bottle.

The last part of the ride, from 63km onwards, was limited traffic control. As such, when there was a red light, there would be anything from 50-200 riders bunching up waiting for the green. This was also the start of the hilly bits, and where I found I was passing most people. I know it wasn't a race, but...

Once I got to the 80km mark, I was looking for fatigue to set in, but I got a puncture instead, and earned a 10 minute break! It started to get busy when the ride joined with the 50km and 25km courses.

It seems the cruellest hills were just after the 100km mark through Highgate Hill (Suburbs that have "Hills" in their name are usually difficult to ride through), with lots of people pushing their cycles up these (my guess, the 25km course participants), but the last half kilometre was a nice downhill run to the end.

A nice surprise as I turned in toward the finish line in Musgrave Park, they announced my arrival on the loudspeaker as I crossed! Some poor people must have had the job of looking up the entry numbers to bring up the names of the rider for the announcer to call out as they came over the line (over 9000 riders in all the events!)

In the end, I completed the 104km course in 4hr 7min, with about 28 mins in downtime with rest stops and puncture repairs. I averaged 25.3 km/hr, which I'm happy with. Six weeks ago, I'd rarely average that speed on my 18 km commute!

So all in all, what a fantastic day! I'll do it again in a flash. I even managed to raise over $400 for MS before the event (another thing I've never done before!)

And I have to give a big thanks to the guys on here who have given me tips and advice, sharing their experience along the way. I've taken it all on board, which led to an enjoyable day, and I could have gone a lot further! Cheers!
