Yeh back in Liverpool UK in the 50's and 60's when I was a kid, as in 1953 until we left in 1968 for Australia.
Still remember mum with the pudding tied in a muslin cloth I think, in a pudding bowl am sure it was boiled in water but long time ago, but I remember the old man setting it alight, with brandy I think?
Someone can verify that, and custard, good memories all round, they really were the good times, poor but good, I actually wrote a poem about Christmas!........

I wrote this May 1986, not sure why, dad died New Years Eve in Perth, same year, maybe a bit of melancholy crept into my mind, I was in hospital in Sydney, liver failure, I was in nearly 5 weeks, close to death and just thinking about stuff, there were 4 beds in the ward, and 3 or 4 times a week I would wake up in the morning and have a new patient in the 2 beds opposite, the old patients would die during the night, bodies very quietly removed in the dead of night, and a new person!
Asked nurses "am I in the right ward" she replied yes its the "linga longa" ward?.....its where people come to die, I asked if I was dying, she said you are in the right place!.....sh.t, stuff this I don't wanna die yet, and I fought hard to recover, I did, but took a year or two.

But I was writing poetry, and I had a memory of a typical white Liverpool Christmas!

I will post it when I find my book, 100s of poems too!

CHRISTMAS

A young girl walking, footsteps resounding wildly from nearby houses,
Thoughts of love fill her head, but not for the first time!
Eyes glazed, everything looks fresh and wonderful,
Snowflakes fall ever so gently, each one perfectly formed, but different.

The night sky, velvet blue, low clouds, quite still, bleak, forbidding.
Street lamps glow dimly in the distance, bluish white corona extending.
Singing and laughter assails the ears, everyone seems overjoyed.
Children waiting ever so patiently, so naive, so blatantly sensitive.

Parents busy themselves, preparing, cooking, wrapping, all is ready.
The atmosphere is electric, children wait in controlled anticipation.
Waiting, patiently waiting, for tonight is special, tonight is Christmas.

Christmas puddings yummy

yes wrapped in muslin/ old flour bag.
boiled in a tin bowl, (glass was too expensive ?)

my dear beloved ..."I did it for the kids, now the grandies love it" Our puddings have the following
assorted genuine silver coins, miniature horse shoes, love hearts, thimble, walking stick,
there are other bits but I cannot remember and dare not ask her, she would laugh till next week, especially after old comments about bloody things trying to break my teeth.

Jam donuts aka ponchikiy or sufganiyot, great festive food for December. The Woolies prefabricated puddings are nice but best enjoyed when bought at the post-Christmas closeout price.

agree on half price modern puddings, inject some port into them add brandy to outside.

Lions clubs also do a cool cake. I buy several to keep me going for a few mon....weeks

Laidley was a receiver (pun not intended) and each team has at least one. It's rare for them do get a hard ball get, but it's their role.

I think the outside hate (if you will) is directed towards to some of the players and their astronomical wages.

I like soccer, but only the highlights or world cup.

Then there are divers in AFL. But compared to soccer, it's like comparing apples to planets.



And there are fly fishermen out there that couldn't give a rats about either.

...so hard to find anyone interested in building me an approx 3.5m by 6m steel-frame gable-roofed shed with a roller door at one end attached to my existing house?

95% of the garage places I have contacted won't touch it at all. Not even interested.

I found one local guy who is 'interested' and got a quote from him in February (which I was very pleased with, btw), but since then I've been trying to get him back here to run through a few details, without success! I've even told him numerous times I'm happy to proceed with the work so slot me in to his schedule, but nothing! I'm not sure he's really that 'interested'.

Very frustrating.

Thanks for the thought, CB, but I certainly don't expect anyone here to help out, other than point me in the direction of someone who has the interest and capability to undertake the work.

Even thought about the high cost option of getting the roof extended, but that won't allow for the height I'd like to have for a potential future grey nomad purchase.

Not as simple as it first seems. One side of the shed/garage is against my existing brick veneer house. As I have eaves around my house, I don't want to have posts approx 500mm from the existing brick wall (ugly and space consuming). Therefore, that side needs to be tied in to the existing structure. Most shed/garage places won't touch it as it is too much risk/hassle to get engineering and permit sign-off.

The other 'challenge', from a kit perspective, is that the side opposite the house wall will be on the boundary line and will therefore need to be fire rated as it is attached to the primary dwelling. Not sure that anyone would supply such a kit. It's certainly a bespoke arrangement, anyway.

It's not an impossible task, but those who have the interest and the capability are so busy that they would prefer to put their efforts into more straight forward work.

I can see jointing/articulation of the new slab, soil tests to spec it, a couple of boundary checks, negotiations with adjoining property, a preliminary dilapidation report… The effort is approaching same as building a Class 1 structure.

Yeah, like I said, it's not impossible, it just requires extra effort. And whilst they have more work than they can handle, the harder jobs get dropped in favour of the easy ones.

I know I could do it all myself, but I don't have the knowledge now, so would need to navigate my way through the learning process. and to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I want to go through that process if I'll never have the use for that info again. I know I'll pay more for someone else to do it, but I've got the budget put aside for it and would just like to get it done sooner rather than later, without consuming my time.

Anyway, I'll keep persisting with the guy I have already; a builder mate of mine has told me he is a good operator and does good standard work, so perhaps persisting will be worthwhile in the long term. Just frustrated that it's taken nearly 12 months just to get him to come around here and run through a few clarifying details with him. When he doesn't even return my text messages, it doesn't fill you with confidence.

Seen it all before since I started working in 1968, people just want the easy jobs, were your job would still make em a profit, but "too much thinking and footwork"
