Normally, I'd call my kid an idiot, but he did something truelly great today. I got a crisis message from my mum. She didnt know what to say. How do i know what to say.
Anyhow. Speaking to my kid over house party, that way i dont have to speak to his mum, he did what normally I'd not appreciate. He added my mum to the chat and she joined. Its a sign of the times, but i got to speak with my grandpa. So did my kid. It was nice.

I created this beautiful cup of hot brown liquid this morning.

Two years home practice and I still find it very difficult to make them look like that. Put a smile on face and started my day of the right note.

Made some pizza dough and instead of putting olive oil/water in the mix, I replaced them with full cream milk and melted butter. Came out good.

My best mate has 12 teeth out yesterday. Unfortunately as Vet dug deeper it was much worse than expected.

Survived the operation which was a risk.

9 other teeth out two years ago.

He is my 13yo Greyhound.

So whilst he is sore and miserable as imaginable, it felt good to know he's been in the best care and looked after.

I want his last days/years to be as best as possible.

I genuinly had to laugh today. My car was at my grandpas place, no i didnt park it there, i wont get into how it got there, nothing to do with me. My aunty took it back to my mums house. My aunty has a history of deplorably slow cars and a lead foot. A bf with an na barra isnt a fast car. But my aunty has my mum scared because apparently there was a flashing light when she would corner. Flat footed of course dsc will say no. Its not a yarris. The weird sound is dsc. The car was saying no. Made me laugh but. Whens the last time a stock barra has ever scared a person? I dont think that statement has ever been made. Long story short i havent had that car in quite a few years, drove it not too long ago, but hasnt been on my driveway in maybe 8 years. Its nothing scary to say the least.

Got up early and stood on the end of the driveway listening to the service on the wireless and took the time to thank both my grandfathers.

Then with a whole morning ahead of us it was time for our yearly ritual of jarring up olives. This is a real team effort between the Mrs and I.
We've got a council reserve nearby with around 30 mature olive trees. Enter my contribution. Being over six foot, still fairly fit and agile its up the ladder I go to hand pick only the finest fruit We had a good season, they were quite big so it didn't take too long to get our 10kg's for the coming year. I then give them a good wash and prep them for brining.

So its over to the Mrs now, also an Executive Chef. She'll mix up the salt water brine and change it daily until they loose their bitterness. About 30 days this year according to her taste buds.
She then makes the salt and vinegar brine whilst waving a large wooden spoon at me barking orders for herbs from the garden. I concur and scurry away fearing for my safety (I'm only kidding I can run faster than her)
Lot's of home grown garlic, rosemary, chilli, lemongrass etc.

Then after all that preparation is the fun part, making up the concoctions, lemongrass and chilli, rosemary and garlic, lemon/ pepper to name a few. Now we have a whole years supply at around 35c a piece to make. Give it a month or so and they'll be ready for pizza's, salads or just shoving in my mouth, on the couch, watching some motorsport.
That'll make me feel good...

Attached two bunches of flowing Rosemary from my garden to the front doors last night.

Both my Grandparents from my mothers side served during WW2. We would normally lay flowers at the 11am service, this seemed a good compromise this year.

I made a shed pot belly out of a stainless steel beer keg I have had for over 10 years, used unmatching slightly dodgy hinges for the door and dodgy door handle (it was all I had laying around without going to a hardware store)

I used some 2.5 inch exhaust as the chimney, had it laying around for years as well. Fired it up outside with the 'chimney' on to make sure it worked ok before I installed in the shed, it fired up a beauty

Finally replaced a (cracked mounting lug) power steering reservoir in one of my cars. This had been an epic fail since July 2014, I’d twice before bought a replacement part and not installed it before circumstance removed the opportunity. It felt good to put the old, damaged one in the bin.

So i helped my brother out with his backyard. Anyrate, he is out of work. So i do not lend money. However, i did take him grocery shopping. Tins of canned potatoes you can do anything with. And theyre cheap. But theyre new to my brother, even though theyre nothing new to me. So a couple cans in the basket. Im not a food guy, my brother is a pretty good cook. He has explored the options already. Chilli, pork, chilli sauce, bbq, garlic, once fried its all good. So next week when round 2 of garden maintenance happens, im expecting something good.

Both cheap, convineint, and for some reason not crap when you through things of flavour at them. Deffinately processed to some degree, but cheap and sleazy.

Rinsed well, they are really handy and quick for using in a potato salad.

Fry them up, the cheaper the better. Garlic, onion, bacon, chicken, doesnt really matter. It all works.

I’ll grab a tin tomorrow. I’m mostly looking forward to the look on my wife’s face when I show up with it.

My ex bought them 20 years ago. Some recipe from "that's life" magazine for steak diane with sauce from a packet served with these canned potatoes and canned asparagus or green beans.

They are OK - taste like a regular potato and was the nicest thing on the plate- but of course they're not very economical. It's a left over from the 1940/50s where every mum would buy canned peas, corn, beans and even mushrooms because they are convenient and don't require much (if any) cooking. Plus freezers weren't common - they were tiny ice boxes in your fridge so frozen veg wasn't possible.
That still makes canned veg like potatoes and carrots very strange though because they're easy to store.

E: what made me laugh today was my 7 y/o kid playing wii sports tennis. He was swinging like mad when I walked into the room and that was because he had it in multiplayer split screen mode where he was every player on the court playing against himself.
He called it "hardcore" mode. But I really know he was doing it because whoever loses, he wins!

This one today almost made me LOL - and in a semi-public space where many treat others as smallpox and typhus-ridden lepers, that may not have ended well...
