Probably because my brain, graphics calculator, laptop calculator, online calculator(s) and microsoft excel all unanimously agree on 288 when the formula is written exactly as it is in title of this thread.

=SUM(A1/A2*(A3+A4))

A1=48
A2=2
A3=9
A4=3

The extra brackets starting and endind the equation are simply a MS office quirk to formulate the cell

=SUM(A1/A2(A3+A4))
leaving out the '*' before the brackets on creates an invalid equation

A1=48
A2=2
A3=9
A4=3

No need to a right of reply, it is what it is. I takes many years to gain a Masters degree in mathematics and become an honorary member of the Institute of Mathematicians.

But maybe the 14 year old is right.....they always are.

Yes but 48/2(9+3) is NOT the same as 48/(2(9+3)), surely a mathematics lecturer would not make such an amateur mistake?
I'm still waiting for an answer on this one.

Okay, I have one question - if you're right...why does every single device I've used to calculate this equation (exactly as displayed in the heading, not adding your additional parenthesis) give me an answer of 288?

I have not added any additional parenthesis when i put it into the calculator it still comes out at 2

48÷2(9+3)
Brackets first, we all agree with that.
Then work left to right.
No operator before the brackets implies a multiplication.
So we effectively have
48÷2X(9+3)
48÷2X12
24X12
288

High School Math really!

that isnt the equation though, yes if there is a X between the 2 and brackets it would be 288 but there isnt...

Okay we use BEDMAS

Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

http://math.about.com/library/weekly/aa040502a.htm

division and multiplication are equal and are read in order left to right just like addition and subtraction.

the answer is 288

20 ÷ (12 - 2) X 3^2 - 2
Rule 2: Everything in the brackets first

20 ÷ 10 X 3^2 - 2
rule 3: Exponents

20 ÷ 10 X 9 - 2
Rule 4: Multiply and Divide as they appear

18 - 2
Rule 5: Add or Subtract as they appear

16

48/2x(9+3)
Now Left To Right!
=48/2x12
=24x12
=288

48/2x(9+3) or 48/2(9+3) = (48/2)x(9+3) NOT 48/(2x(9+3)
My highest math qualification yr13 calc (not yet passed)

Is that all try 45 years ago and all the acronyms sound like dumba5s it was in the day of the dinosaur in brackets first then the unsigned multiplication because that is what a number against a bracket meant then the division so should end up as 2 no wonder the girl at the coffee shop could not figure out the change when I gave her the odd 60 cents to give me an even $5.00 change after she had punched in the $20.00 I had tendered when the items came to $15.60

Because everyone who agrees with the answer being 2, believes that

He seemed to take a low profile shortly afterward when it was stated by the testing authority that he was completely wrong.

Getting back to the original argument.

The only thing that academics fear is being proven wrong.
If the answer is 2 but all of the software and systems show 288 then the legal ramifications are beyond spectacular. All the "experts" here can make bazillions suing Microsoft for damages......off you go.....

I'm old. I thought the answer was 2, but now concede that the answer is 287.999 given Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
And in another space-time continuum it may even be 288.001
