That brings back some great memory’s. The old man and I bought a ka lazer from a wrecker in about 1991 that had a front ender. Bought all the bits required to repair and paint. And a KB 5 speed. Even had to straightened one of the front rails.

Became one of 3 cars the old man had, that I learnt to drive in. Once I got my p’s it kind of became my car. Damm I flogged it with my mates all over Brissie.

It certainly taught me how to keep a car running. Remember Points? Nothing like pulling them out, giving them a rough grind on the nearest concrete gutter, eyeballing the gap in the dizzy, and getting ya home.

And how bout the 165kph top speed fully loaded on the gateway motorway.

Today I saw a Triumph TR7 (club plates).

(Lasers/Mazda 323s: a mate once owned a sedan; it might have been the Ford version - not sure. I opened the boot and my memory is that I could flex the boot lid easily with my hands.)

I got my ex to buy an 1982 323 after she wrote off her mk2 escort ghia. Kept it for decades but got rid of it after 330k kms when the rings, valve stem seals, the g/b and clutch got tired and worn, plus the hatch/doors started to get a little rusty.

It was a pain to get parts for in 2002, must be impossible now. Really good cars though, it was a daily driver we'd sometimes take on road trips (localish SW WA) before I got my EL.

I'm pretty familiar with them and the E5 but I have no idea what that grey thing next air filter is. The mazda version had nothing like that, just a few vacuum solenoids- (mercifully little compared to slightly other and later models, particular mazda/ford)

Yesterday I saw an XB coupe. For some reason every day on or near hepburn ave there's some rare car. Must be the fact it's an old enough area for large house blocks with rear colourbond double garages/workshops, and lots of car guys around the warwick to padbury suburbs.

That laser looks mint! I remember when my sister was looking at them or the astra (was early 1990s) for her first car, she went the astra and what a money put it was...

On the house site I was working at, apprentices (with a little help from his father) just bought himself a HR Holden, apparently in great drivable condition.

Happy to see a young bloke interested enough in older cars still.

Used to really get up an go back in the day.
was a 6GL XPAC Model ... 4-speed manual.

Was a Demo they bought as it was specced by the salesman at the time so had some extras on it.

Got traded in in 1990 when my Dad died .... both of them actually ... the KB Laser was a 1.5GL 5-speed manual with brown cloth interior. Ran off the smell of an oily rag ... bullet proof.

Was traded in for a new Ford Laser KF GHIA ... 5 -speed manual ... I learnt to drive on that as well ... that thing was bullet proof as well. Top car indeed and nice and comfy velour interior too.

And then later on after my Mum moved to QLD before changing plates over
It was running a full Whiteline lowered suspension setup as the old kit was tired and she wanted it to handle a lot better. My Mum was a bit of a hoon. No autos when I was growing up anywhere. All manual cars

Also to add ... another car that others have mentioned that was added to the stable before she moved to QLD as well was this lovely Wasp Yellow manual TJII Magna VRX ... 1 of 3 manuals with sunroof in that colour made.

The front Bridgestone G-GridII's used to get a workout.
The manual shift throw was really long in it ... but was fun to drive.
The KF Laser has a MUCH NICER manual shift/clutch action feel in it.

OK ... back on-topic ... I'll stop reminiscing now.

Hi Everyone,
This morning i went for a drive 8/1/21 to Bathurst only 2 hour drive from my place.

I stopped at Oberon about 8.30am for some breakfast and what do i see a Leyland P76 it was Yellow. I can't remember the last time i saw a P76? i thought they had all died by now!

That colour was called Bold as Brass.

They had some great colour names, I had an N V Green Executive, Dad had an Am I Blue deluxe 6cyl 4 speed.
5 all together in our family, they were great cars in their day.

Certainly there were some build problems, but not because of BRITISH Leyland, this was a wholly Australian developed and built car by Leyland Australia.
I think you should also kep in mind that this was the first model for them, imagine if the HQ or XA was the first ventures for Holden or Ford, build quality would be much the same.
If they had ever got to a series 2, it would have changed many things.

From my experience most of the knockers had never even sat in one, let alone drive or own one.

There were many reasons why the project failed, strikes that held up parts from suppliers to start with meant they couldn't fulfil a great number of orders.

There was a lot of negativity in the press, but ultimately it was Lord somebody or other that bankrupted the parent company and caused a company wide collapse.

In hindsight there never was room for 4 players in the Ozie market, and especially one the government took away the market protection, there wasn't even room for 3 really.

And without the government protection, what have we got now?
Sweet stuff all.
Could you imagine the US government not buying US cars? or the Germans, Japanese? Swedes etc? A totally ludicrous situation we now have where we make next to nothing in Australia these days - and we wonder why we have high unemployment??

I love the engine in that generation Magna. They ran smooth and had a nice snarl to them. The Mitsubishi V6 at time was vastly superior to Holden's Ecotec V6 and the SOHC Falcon 6, and it had more torque than the 3.0 Toyota V6. Ford eventually got on the same page with the Barra but Holden never even got into the book full stop!

It was deceptively quick for what it was back then.
Nice interior as well.

Cany find a decent one for love not money ... same thing for the Laser.
I'd love to get one of either as toy. Won't be far off for the KF Laser to be on Historic Plates soon I think. Strange to think of it that way.

Just last year before I sold it, my mechanic was replacing the rocker cover gasket on my TJ wagon 3.5, he took it for a test drive around the block. He couldn’t believe how strong the engine was “it spins the wheels in second!” ;)

Many many moons ago i bought a P76, only had for a couple of weeks before it was completely wrecked in a *cough* accident *cough* in Claremont Perth, that big boot took out over half a doz others in the *cough* accident *cough* though....

Brought back memories of a brown wagon I briefly had, loading it full of old red brick commons to the inside window sills, floated around corners like and old tugboat.

Danzvtil was talking about Mitsubishi Magna's. Before my wife and i brought our Mondeo in 2012 we had a second hand TJ Magna 3.5 litre engine.

The thing was a rocket and shocked some people the way it went. One night about midnight we were coming home from a Wedding and driving along Rookwood Rd where the old Lidcombe Hospital used to be.

I got the red lights and next to me a young guy in a Hyundai pulled up next to with his mate in the passenger seat. I could hear his mate saying "its only a Magna blow him off when the lights turn green" and he was revving the engine looking at me.
I must say i would not normally do this but after they both started laughing at my car i thought "why not".

The light went green and i took off and when i looked in the rear vision mirror he was about 50 meters behind me. I got another set of light he caught up then they went green and i did it again to him.

I got another red light and i leaned out the window and said "Magna's not as slow as you think are they"?.
He didnt say a word but my wife looked at me and said "are you going to act your age now and slow down"?
