The Falcons still looked to have a mortgage on the race - but it rained giving the lighter more nimble Holden Dealer Team Holden's the slight edge that they needed. Holden dealer Team driver Peter Brock took the race - it was one of the "longest" finishes on record. Brock a lap ahead of second placed John French (Falcon), who in turn was a lap ahead of the Doug Chivas E49 Charger, with another Charger and two Torana's each a further lap down on the previous car. The wet conditions and greasy track took its toll of cars. Apart from Bond, another four Torana's slid off the track and Ford driver Fred Gibson tipped his Falcon on its roof just before Skyline - almost half-way between Bill Brown's two spectacular crash sites of years before. 1972 marked the end of yet another stage in the development of the race - the last event to be contested over 500 miles. they were lucky : |

And to really stir up the children. The day is coming where Holden and Ford will have to unite and work together (they already jointly own some suppliers and shared infrastructure). Probably not to the extent of sharing platforms, but in other areas. Its the only way they can take on the other big world manufacturers. If they continue to fight against one another they will slowly slip into history, replaced by a Ford US world car (Taurus anyone) and a GM Front wheel drive gas guzzler. Remember a few months this year Falcon slipped to 4th place on sales, that will only get worse and Holden will follow them down) Lastly for those who say the VE is ugly. You had better start getting used to it as those who have seen the Orion report it looks similar in SOME respects (wheels in the corners, flared guards, glass house). Flared guards? Most cars these days have flared guards. VE has the ugliest (at the front). VE Glasshouse looks ok. VE rear end is not easy on the eye, and the front looks like something from 2002. |

Power delivery felt fine to me and was strong across the rev range, so I don't know what you're harping on about there either. One thing that really impressed me with the VE was the silky smooth idle, you need to look at the tacho to tell if the engine is running and you could put a full glass of water on top of the running engine and not spill a drop. |

Oh I honestly don't give a **** how many posts you have, remember the old saying it's not the quantity, it's the quality of the posts that counts. Really how hard is to have a contructive conversation without turning this thread to ****? anyway... Back on topic BadMac, I hope the Orion does have flared wheel guards because they look out of place on the VE. Well not as extreme anyway |

I probably get flamed to hell with what I am going to say but to hell with it.
I find it appalling with some of the derogatory comments on the VE. The BA/BF Falcon is an excellent car and its an excellent car for our local industries. And so is the new Commodore our local car manufacturing is almost nil in this country and including other manufacturers of other stuff like food and clothes etc etc. The imports are killing our local manufacturing structure in this country I do my damndest to buy locally manufactured goods like clothes and food etc etc. Without Holden what would Ford be like? Another Camry ? or some other FWD white good?. Its the competiton between Holden and Ford that keeps our local manufacturing going. And Jobs take a look at Mitsubishi in oz they are falling down at a rapid rate and it means less jobs for people. I don't mind the odd Holden vs Ford until it gets really childish and stupid. I don't give a rats behind about COTY but I do feel happy when one of our own local manufacturer wins Ford of Holden. Sure Holden won this year but it does not mean that Ford wont win in another year. It would be a very bleak and sad day for Australia when it comes to 100% imported cars and no local car manufacturer. Also comes to this question people say the VE is too european I cant for the life of me understand what an 100% Aussie designed car looks like. Since 90% of cars that are built here uses other manufacturers designs for their own. just my 2 cents really. Anyway carry on. |

I thought wheels mag were in bed with Holden anyway.. The VE may have some better features then the BF, but surely there is another car thats better than the VE... Standard ones are ugly, (HSV's look pretty good). There is no way i would prefer a VE over a BF, or ED anyday.

If anyone didnt think the VE would be COTY..... : .
All new model commo's have won! Ford WILL get their act together on the next round of model. Ford will release new model next year! The model will be better than the VE and BF series 47. The Falcon will win COTY '09 Everyone will grow up! Didnt two models in a row win COTY for Ford recently? Memories are short.....the VE may be ugly but setle down a bit! The next generation of Falcon will be better........beleive it or not. | [/url] |

I'd say that going by Falcons' success in COTY it's next due for a win in 2041 :
As a new member to this site and a proud owner of a Ford model T i'm disappointed at the level of criticism towards a car that is obviously a superior product. If the VE wins world car of the year later this year i can only imagine the "bad blood" on this site then. Be glad Holden won and not some rice burner. I guarantee that the Orion designers have had they're bar raised and this can only be good for Australian made 4 door sedan fans both blue and red. |

Won't happen. The top ten overall from a field of 28 are: Audi Q7 Audi TT Citroen C4 Picasso Citroen C6 Fiat Grande Punto Jaguar XK Lexus LS 460 Mercedes CL MINI Suzuki SX4 / Fiat Sedici Although they are still in the race for the design section. |
