There's a great Criterion Collection version of Two Lane Blacktop available. It comes with a nice book that includes some essays and the movie script. Of course it has a restored widescreen print of the film. The DVD has some very nice bonus features and commentaries.

At least it's available for Region 1. I'd say it came out at least 5 years ago.

The Getaway - From the early 1970s starring Steve McQueen as a criminal fresh out of prison and goes to do another bank robbery. Not much car chasing exactly, but lots of car abuse and uneccesary noise and improper use of motor vehicles, etc.

I haven't seen a good car chase in a while and watched Safehouse (2012) recently. Ryan Reynolds commandeers an older BMW 3 or 5 series to transport his prisoner to another safehouse while being pursued by creeps in an SUV. Then the prisoner attacks him in the car and it gets crazy.

Bullit is my favorite it's a very realistic car chase with very good driving and the airborne scenes are real ,also Jake and Ellwood The Blues Brothers

Definite all time favourite would have to be "Gone in 60 Seconds" with Nicholas Cage in the GT500

Outstanding chase scene

Watched a 1983 crime/political thriller called The Star Chamber and was surprisedby an unexpected cool car chase between a Firebird and a cop car in a busy multi-level car park. Most of it is shot as point-of-view using cameras on the front of the cars.

Bullitt - probably not the first car chase in the movies but it was the one that changed the way they were filmed. Authentic and a very cool Steve McQueen behind the wheel. Today's have too many stunts and gimmicks. I was 18 when I saw that - young and impressionable!

Bullitt first but a very close second is Vanishing Point, 1970 Dodge Challenger at full tilt.

I'll rattle off a few that I like and I'm sure the y have already been mentioned.
Bullit great chance with a charger and 390 gt stang
Vanishing point 1971 dodge challenger rt against police from Denver through to California

Smokey and the bandit 1
1977 ta firebird 6.6 litre against mostly Plymouth gran furys and Pontiac lemans super enforcers.( good ole Buford t)

Gone in 60 the original. 40 min car chase with a 1971 Mach 1 mustang (original Eleanor)

Gumball rally Shelby cobra 427 against Ferrari 365 Daytona (and you see some flesh of the opposite)

You will probably notice all the movies are old movies. That's because they had no cgi when making then.

Anybody see "The Sweeney"
It's the one that the Top Gear UK guys did the chase scene for with a FoST and a Jag.
The bit that they did on TG (after editing) actually made it to the movie as the end chase!

There are many but the I just watched Ronin recently and I was very impressed.

Most entertaining would have to be the Blue Brothers.

Speaking of Sweeney, The Professionals was another 1977 to 1983 secret service/crime show based in London which had a lot of great car chase stuff in it, with Escorts, Capris, Granadas, Cortinas, Euro luxobarges etc. Normally every episode had a car chase in it. The same producer made an Aussie version called Special Squad, set in 1980s Melbourne with XD or XE Falcons driven by the stars, but it has seldom been seen since its first run.

Not "the Best" but one I've loved for years is the end chase in Midnight spares

XA Coupe lovers do not click on the link, for others the chase starts around the 10min mark

For trucks, I'll also add Duel (directed by Steven Spielberg) and Maximum Overdrive (directed by Stephen King).

Avoid at all costs an Aussie road-horror film called Road Train, it was one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Recently got to see Killer Elite, a recent hitman-style film set in 1980 starring Jason Statham and Bobby de Niro.

The film is a) an action thriller that takes places in many cities across the world (including Australia) and b) all about classic British cars. So many daily driver British cars from the mid- to late-'70s were in major scenes.

Talk about a thread from the past ... I posted in this back in 2006.

Anyway, I still think one of the most underrated movie car chases is from a little known Australian movie called The Chain Reaction. Here is a link to the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK8GhuA_WHE

Wow, I didn't realise I started this thread way back in 2005! Well I've just kept adding to it as I discover more movie car chases. I love them.

I remember The Chain Reaction, it's an Aussie film and had a bit of a (first) Mad Max feeling to it.
