Default Rust repairs out of warranty

I have a 2003 BA GT and i removed the rear wing to get the car buffed
the centre bolts holes are almost rusted out and its spreading to the rest of the boot
the rust started at the bolt holes drilled by FPV for the centre post of the wing
The smash repairer looking after the buffing told me to contact Ford
I did and they said take it to a local dealer for inspection
now are they going to tell me to f.off?
i want it fixed but my smash repairer said it will cost over $500 to fix and seeing that its not wear and tear, damage or caused by me and its obviously from factory do you think i have a leg to stand on?

If anything, I'd be thankful the issue is isolated to a panel which can be easily removed and replaced.

$500 is not an awful lot to spend on a car, to get it back into tip-top shape.

Anyone will. Unless its a part to be replaced and you just missed the warranty period by weeks they may do a good will request to cover labour. Once its out of warranty its your problem.

Back in the day my Ford Dealer told me my Diff Bushes needed replacing the 1st service after the warranty had run out on my BA and that was not under warranty then.

Normally getting a bumper respray costs a grand, so $500 is pretty cheap.
Id be replacing the whole boot lid with a cancer free one though.
so over $500 would be more like $1500

For a 13 year old car I don't think you would have any hope of a claim.

Any way, even if Ford fixed it, it would be a cheap job - you are better off getting it fixed by a reliable repairer yourself.

My first question to you, ebv8, is do you get the car serviced at Ford?

Whilst it may not make much of a difference given the age of the car in this case, Ford certainly look after the customers that get their cars serviced at a Ford dealer better than those who don't.

If you rang the Ford CRC to get the answer of "take it to a dealer" then at least there is still a light at the end of the tunnel for you pursuing that route.

As for taking it to the dealer, sure you risk having them tell you to go away, but if the dealer is not far away from you, what do you have to lose by trying? The worst they can say is go away and you'd be in the same position you'd be in by not going to them.

Good luck.

It's not the 10,000 km which is the issue here, it's the 13 year age of the vehicle.

I'm with the others, $1,000 is not a big spend on the car that you treasure. I know owners of cars (especially Euro-trash) who spend this type of money (& a lot more) on regular servicing.

Dr Terry

It's probably not a bad idea to replace the bolts with stainless ones.

For a while, Ford were respraying Shockwave-painted vehicles beyond the five year panel perforation warranty. However that campaign has long since expired.

i thought i'd ask
its just a boot lid anyway
I have just spent $1650 on it in the last 3 weeks
first hail excess
then excess because someone hit me when i was getting a quote for the hail
then full buff and opticoat

still have the wheels to refurbish and rear window tint before i'm happy again

not bad though as i have not really spent anything major on it since buying it, maybe because i barely drive it

My car isnt 13yo
It was 9 months out of warranty. .....
Ford australia are usless. All under the thumb of the US and its just a $$ figure to them.

Their loss. Wont be buying another new ford. (Bought 3 in last 5yrs or so)

So as i said. If they refused a warranty claim less than 12months out of warranty, i doubt they will cover one 10+years out of warranty.

9 months out off warranty is out of warranty, and ford aren't a charity.

Perhaps a good condition bootlid that hasn't had a spoiler, (the XR6/8s often seem to rust on bootlid under the spoiler too) would be best to fit and get painted up for your car. Whatever you decide to do you should rustproof the new or repaired bootlid and the rest of the car while your at it to help prevent similar issues in the future.

If it's in warranty I would expect repairs, but 9 months or 10 years out of warranty it's all yours.
I don't think apple or Samsung would replace a battery, or the likes ,if a few months out of warranty.
Sh.t the way I see some people treat there cars, I'm not suprised it's a battle to get some things fixed under warranty.

Its absolutley within spec. Thats the top answer for all Ford warranty claims.
Even if the car was 2 months old, the warranty is not worth the paper is comes on.

Be thankfull the rust isnt in the sills!! (yet)

Bugger

I should have thought of this and made a warranty claim on the MK 11 GT Cortina I bought for my first car that was about 15 years old and had rust under the drivers footwell.

Silly me I took it to a rally repair shop who cut out the footwell, welded in a new panel and also replaced a rusted out cross chassis brace.

I was a poor uni student working part time, bugger- should have hit Ford up for a Lemon warranty claim of fitness for purpose and all that- I mean it was an ex rally car but should not have rusted out like that in 15 years, I mean really Ford are useless not building a car to not rust with rally running for at least a 15 year lifespan.

Maybe I can hit them up for a refund of the repair job done 32 years ago based on my recollection....

sorry for the hulk post its not turned into
my question was purely for the rust starting at the holes drilled by FPV
if it rusted in a sill or panel join fair enough all fords do that but rusting because they didn't seal a hole they drilled???

my local panel shop (not the one i went to) just did $10k in repairs on a 2010 FPV GT all paid for by Ford.

anyway i have decided to just get it fixed myself

Seeing as FPV made the modifications, its not really a Ford problem. And seeing as FPV are no longer in business, I don't think OP has a chance of getting any warranty work done.

Particularly when considering the corrosion warranty is only for five years, and the OP vehicle is 14 years old, nearly three times the warranty period.

There would be relatively few instances where any manufacturer warrants defects found outside the warranty period. Excluding systematic problems, recalls etc.
