Default T5 Performance Gearbox Rebuild

today i was giving my car a bit of hit when i shifted from 2nd to 3rd i felt the box crunch and let go. unfortunately 3rd gear doesnt work any more and theres a loud rattling sound through each gear as i drive. i wanted to get a rebuild but can't find a performance kit in australia that i can buy. i was after heavy duty gears which would hold with a stroker and abit of thrashing at a track. any help would be really appreciated.
thanks

Ouch, does not sound too good mate. It could be worth your while contacting Mal Wood Automotive, they are in Warwick, Qld though.

LOL I know exactly what you mean, same thing happened to me. I would strongly suggest not driving it anymore though.

Get it rebuilt as a Z-Spec box, or get a dogset. All gear exchange in smithfield will look after you, send it up to Malwood in qld as an exchange... Dellow automotive out kingsgrove way will help to.

speak to HART transmissions at brendale QLD

he did a modification to some T5 boxes and they seem to hold up well
they change the tapered bearing on the shafts to a roller bearing so it doesnt move sideways
making the shafts stay still and not flex away from eachother which is USUALLY the caust of death for the T5s apparently
BI6TIM got this done to his T5 thats about to go in his turbo ED

Looks like a pretty good set up might be worth looking in to these.

there is 3 types of gear set you can buy from them. syncronised, dog ring straight cut, helical cut dog ring. which one would be the go that would take a bit of a thrashing. i dont mind a bit of gearbox noise either but i am worried about driveabiliy on the street.

You'll want synchro mate unless its going to spend its life on the Track.

Why does everyone assume this.
You can drive a dogbox on the street day in day out.. I know ive done it, the only thing you have to put up with is a whine, sometimes harder to get it into gears, especially reverse.. but other then that, its no different to a normal box.

buses and trucks only recently got syncromesh gearboxes LOL
crash box for the win

i know of a AWD TX3 with a dog box and he drives it no worries
i think the only difference is the gear positions change slightly (bit of an angle between gears rather than a H (think it was like an italic H)

I didn't assume anything. My old mans car had a straight cut dog box in it, absolute to get into gear at low revs.

The whine I didn't mind, but they are bloody loud

i dont mind a bit of noise i am just wanting to put a gearbox in which would allow me to use the car on weekends and trackdays. i got plans on putting a nice 347 stroker with some alloy heads in the XR and wanted something that would hold the torque and give me whatever advantage i can get. so i guess that throughs the synchronised one out of the equation. which do you think would be most appropriate? dog ring straight cut or helical cut dog ring.
thanks for the help

For the sake of your sanity, don't get straight cut. They are noisy as all hell and the strength they offer is only needed when you get to very high torque figures. (More than you'll see from a stroked Windsor)

Personally, if planning to track the car often, I'd put a TKO in it. Easy to live with and strong, best of both worlds.

That gave me a flashback to my first car, a Mini Deluxe with the "big" 998cc engine. That description fits its gearbox perfectly. Most gearboxes in those days only had synchro from 2nd up. I liked to roll up to red lights in gear to avoid standing starts (like truckies do), so I soon learned to double-declutch to grab 1st on the move.

i need to know that if i get a tko600 would it allow me to keep the flywheel and clutch that i got in my car now or will i need to replace them to match the box. also, what price and where can i get a tko box from. is the tko 600 best suited for what i want to use it for?
thanks

i got told the tko boxes dont fit au's coz the gear stick is situated too far forward and would end up well into the console

i messaged mal wood and he said that the TKO would fit but i would need to do some cutting to the floor and have a link shifter fitted and that it would need a new clutch kit. ill probably end up getting this kit: http://www.astroperformance.com/prod...roducts_id/207
what do you think?
