Default auto tranny issues

howdy.
i just bought an auto 89 EA and it is having issues, mostly around corners.
when i drive around corners and let off the accelerator it seems like it slips into neutral for a second or two and then slams back into gear when i try to accelerate out of the corner. it doesnt do it when launching straight ahead.
i hope that made sense!

My EA did this - it only gets worse. I never found out exactly what the problem was, my mechanic at the time said it was not work fixing.

Soon it will drop out on the straights when cold, then when hot. And take longer to kick back in.

I traded mine in.

lol easily solution to this one, top up the oil in the gearbox.

no worries man, im betting its the 3spd auto..

top the oil up from the gearbox dipstick tube in the engine bay(exhaust side).. thats how i did it on my dads fairlane.

Sorry I didn't realise you hadn't checked fluids... :
There is a dipstick. You get the engine to operating temperature, then turn the engine off and within 20 seconds pull the dipstick and check the level it's at. If it's below then you add transmission fluid. Just pour it down the hole the dipstick came from.

If it's been a while since the last tranny service maybe you should take it to a mechanic and get that done.

yea its an absolute stock CFI 3sp auto. (for now)
it only started to do it on the way home from work today so i was a bit worried!

When the one in the Fairlane started to slip, I toped it up, and it powered on for another year, hassel free.
The owner of it today, which is another 18 months, still hasn't had any problems with it.
If by on its last legs means it will last for another 2 and a half years and have no problems, then yeah sure, its on its last legs.

when checking the fluid level you have to

1- start the engine and run at a fast rate
2- bring back to normal speed and remove dipstick
3- put it in drive then reverse then park (with engine on and brake applied!)
4- turn engine off and replace dipstick

yeah you have to run it through Drive and reverse to make sure the fluid has moved in and through the transmission
