Name your EV poison

I thought it might be interesting to see what kind of Electric Vehicle people might imagine buying. Assume purchase price is 10% below the equivalent petrol or diesel or LPG version.

What I'm interested in would probly be a small sporty 4 door for getting around town. I would want to pay no more than $15k for this, so I might wait a while for it.

Or would you say hang it, and just go driverless taxi?

When they come up with an EV that can compete with or exceed in the ability of vehicles needed for the activities in the below link i may consider one, i seriously doubt it will happen in my lifetime though.....

Edit: I avoid cities like the plague so if i needed to go there i would taxi/train or bus it........

If I get a EV it will be a mid sized SUV (Rav4, XTrail sized) Something with at least 500km range. Budget no more than $50k. Ideal range would be 800km but can survive on 500km if there is a good interstate charging network in place. I may be waiting a while for those specs and price.

System performance is not the issue. For FWD fun you need torque at any died, especially low speed. Well, EV is perfect for that. So it's price then, and with the Nissan leaf at$35k next year and battery prices falling at something like 20% per year it doesn't take many years.

Range is a serious problem though if you want to go where there's no infrastructure.

My imagination suggests trailers that unfold to present 80m2 of soar panels. And soar panel trailers so big they can collect enough juice to power a combine harvester. Okay, I admit that is a bit far-fetched.

Lol, yeah doesn't even come close to been any good for disappearing out bush for a couple of weeks does it, you would need a tanker of fuel just to keep up with the generator needs......

Whats wrong with a onboard generator etc to self charge as you drive, its not rocket science lol.

I guess that idea is reserved only for the high end ev's etc because the charging station makers & owners would miss out on the new El Dorado.. This is another thread material imo lol.

I would convert a AU Falcon first etc when the time comes with something that self charges absolutely for sure, if not available i will invent it definitely.

I would look at it as a business opportunity probably if successful & cheap to do.

I commute regularly around 90km to work each way. The car park won’t have any charge points. IF they did I would be paying a premium, I have to pay extra to use this particular car park already. I live in an apartment with common underground parking, I seriously doubt charge points would be installed anytime soon, even then it will be at a premium. I can’t really see it working for me in the near future.
Sure for city commuter work I see the EV advantage, the day will come and it’s a good thing, but there still will be the usual traffic hassles, I’ll just jump in the train thanks and keep my ICE cars for the commute to work.
If your an inner city hipster living the life with a Ned Kelly beard and a smashed avo salad then perhaps it’s worth trading in the Prius and making the statement with an EV.

As the op stated it'll be used around town.
I've driven a few EV's now, its turning into a hobby of mine, for a small city car the Leaf was by far the best. Not up with the second hand market but getting one for 15k might be a push.
Noticing more and more charging points popping up in public places but I think the convenience is compromised by charging times, a home charge point would be the only way for the time being.

What I’d really like to see is high utilisation city vehicles go electric first. Eg Busses, small delivery trucks and cabs. Oh and maybe Harley’s , that noise they make with straight pipes is pure rubbish!
Seems to me city busses are so noisy, the reduction in city noise pollution alone would be a great benefit, let alone emissions. Maybe we can convert Au’s to EV and return them to taxi use!

The proof of concept is there, i would like to know more about it & the tech behind it. What a fun project for the shed but easier said than done to make it happen happen though.

Outstanding work by the inventor/innovator in NZ, they are great at this sort of backyard tinkering!!

Whatever it might be, I imagine it would be plugged in overnight. If the case, I want one that won't let be drive off while it is still plugged in. Never know what night happen without the first coffee.

Will electric cars be like phones? After a couple of years of regular charging my phone could almost be called a landline rather than a mobile phone.
