Arrow motor

i am thinking of replaceing the old 3.9 with a 4l from an ed,this is a staight swap is it not,how much roughly for a 2nd hand one would you think is reasonable fitted.

is there another engine i could swap it for.

i don't want to swap manifolds or ecu's either.

anyone got a 4 litre engine for sale and can they fit it if i provide the amber fluid and some meat for a bbq ??

i am serious,,

Are you running a 3.9L CFI, or MPFI engine at the moment?

Where exactly in Aus are you?

Is your car currently driveable?

I am on the gold coast and have an EB motor you could have for $250
It needs a new ign module, rocker cover gasket and waterpump. You should have all the sensors for it already.

165,000km on the clock, pulled it to replace it with a V8.
Very good compression. I cant remember it leaking too much oil (its been about 10months since I used it last).

People will prob think i'm stupid for saying this when i'm trying to sell a motor. E series engines are prone to headgasket failure. On frequent stop-start driving and engine on/off frequently opperation..... high 100,000's kms the gasket will start to die (or even earlier).
On long haul cars you are looking at (approx) low to high 200,000's km. Many engines do not follow this rule, its just a general guide.

I could place no guarintee on my engine. It worked well for me, thats all I can say.

I couldnt do the install as I am flat out doing my own car.

Yes you can bolt most of the EA stuff on, you will need to keep the serpentine or do alot of mod to get the EA balancer back on (sphell has done this), the fron topf the AU sump has to be ground down due to clearence issues, and its a very tight fit at the front cross brace.

Get an EF/EL motor will fit straight in no drama, and need just the timing case changed and the balancer if you dont want to run serpentine. (AFIK)

Jason, if you drop in an EF/EL donk with serpentine, are there any major changes/mods you need to do for it to all fit and work correctly?

Hmmm I am thikning about throwing an AU engine in my EA, as it would turn out to be the same cost as getting the headgasket done (it hasn't gone yet, but it slowly leaking) and the getting the electrics sorted...

Can you use the EA radiator, if you want to use AU thermos?

Can you use the BBM?

How much do AU engines go for...complete with all anchilaries, and where is a good place to look for them? I got quoted $1600 for a long motor, here (Canberra)...so where do you find these uber cheap $950 AU engines :|

How much not installed, ie) how much of the $950 is labour?

I paid $900 for mine. Complete with BBM injectors etc, but not PS Pump or Alternator etc. Since then there are engines around here for about $850 with about 30k on them.

The AU manifold isnt suitable for using on an e-series though because of the different MAP sensor. You'd need an EF/L manifold.

If you want to run Serpentine with the EA/D manifold you'll need an XH1 Ute Belt Tensioner.. rare as and very expensive from ford.

EA/D style belts are a pain to fit to the AU motor because there is a mounting lug missing for the alternator bracket and some of the lugs for the aircon compressor are too long, as well as the timing cover and sump needing the attention of a grinder.

AU thermos are more difficult to fit since they are different size and mounting is different design to the EF/L Thermos which can be fitted to EA Radiators as long as the tanks have got the mounting bolt holes in them at the top.

when i fitted my AU engine i had to fit an EF radiator, as the outlet on the water pump is a different size to the EB one. not sure if you can swap water pumps.

Water pumps are all interchangable.. Have to match the pump to the belt setup though.

I bought one a few weeks ago for $160 from repco...

If you have an ea with MPI then i would put in an AU long motor, and keep the serpentine setup.

If you grind the bottom of the sump then you will have heaps of clearance. if you use an EA-ED radiator, you will need to get a piece of pipe made that can reduce from the larger EA hose to the AU hose. Maybe a new EF-EL radiator could be a good idea if your current radiator is old...

Its definitely worth doing!!! There is a wreckers in brissie that has a couple of low k AU motors for around $650, but no accessories, but includes the manifold... So you could sell that. You will need to get A/C, P/S ( or change pulleys) and Alternator...

GO THE AU!!!

You can have mine for $250 firm, (minus injectors, throttle body and altenator), but including: ignition coil, a/c compressor, power steering pump, belts and pullies, exhaust manifold, intake manifold, intake pipe, radiator shroud, i'll even throw in my old EBII non smart lock ECU if you want it, and a few Vodka cruisers (I dont drink them, they are left over from a party, :nutsycuck ).

As said before, I am on the gold coast. I have an engine crane, so you all you need is a trailer or ute.

The engine needs a new ignition module, rocker cover gasket, these parts are readily available. The water pump and fan are seperate from the engine, but included in the price, both appear to be in good condition.

Oh yeah, the engine needs an oil change, he he he.

You should have all the sensors for it on your current motor.

And again I could place no guarintee on my engine. It worked well for me, thats all I can say. You are quite welcome to inspect it as closely as you like (without pulling it apart obviously). You can see all the rocker gear, as I have already removed and replaced it to check it myself.

Let me know.

Mike
