Hey Guys here's an opinion piece on how manufacturing is dying in our country. Quite interesting. What are people's thoughts?

I was told a couple of years ago that in twenty years there would be no manufacturing and bugger all farming in this country. We would be importing, importing and importing. Looks like it's heading that way.............

If Australia loses all its manufacturing capability (which some would say is going to happen) this would lead to massive social issues, there are a lot of very good manufacturers in Oz that employ a lot of very good people. These people are willing to work hard for wages that are less than what you can find in other areas of employment. If you take away their jobs you create a divide between the haves and have not’s (those with jobs and those without)
To have a strong economy (during good times and bad) you need diversification, therefore it is important to have a balance of different industries. Australia is on the verge of losing its balance and as others have said becoming a "warehouse" or hole in the ground. Governments (both parties) are short sighted so whilst we can bring cheaper goods in from overseas and the Australian public saves a bit of extra $$$, the long term consequences are job losses. Times also change and although we live in relatively peaceful times at present, this has not always been the case and may not be the case in future. One of the reasons why the US was so powerful during World War Two was is substantial manufacturing power. We also need to realise that China will not always be cheap, during the 1950’s -1970’s Japan was considering cheap and they were known for producing cheap products of questionable quality. Today Japan is one of the most expensive places in the world to manufacture, however they offer good quality products. If you lose local manufacturing it will not come back and Australia will be at the mercy of foreign countries and if there price goes up there is nothing we can do about it. There are several reasons why manufacturing struggles in this country one is the amount of government interference from either taxes or legislated costs (safety environment etc – taxes I wont go into here as there are other threads on the matter so no point. In regards to legislated costs imposed by governments some of these are not bad, but the issue is they don’t exist overseas and come at an additional cost to the local manufacturers. Another reason why is economy of scale, the more parts you produce the cheaper the parts get. Australia has a small, dispersed population, similar size to North America but has approx. 20 million compared to 300 million. Was interesting hearing the Victorian Premier state on TV state that the government is doing it tough too and it has budgets to meet and they are just like any other business. Just goes to show how little they understand some businesses. A lot of people in business I know are not worried about budgets they are concerned with simply surviving (as a business)
