Should I let her???

Here is my quandry. In a very generous mood, thanks to Mr Boags, at my favourite chinese restaurant I told my 16 year daughter that when she gets her license (in 3 weeks) that I would let her drive my XR8 on our road trip to QLD in december. I said that she could drive once we got into QLD so as not to waist our (//) doing 100kph...... But now I am having second thoughts.... What should I do?? She wont let me forget about it.....

Mate, have you checked your insurance ? but theres no way id let my daughter drive my xr8 fresh out the blocks and no experience at that speed.

Yeah insurance will be OK.... I tried that one on her but it didnt work.....

How confident are you in her driving? If you are then I can't see why you wouldn't.

Personally though, no one drives my car but me!

you should let her drive once you get in qld, and/or let her drive on the way back instead? that way she would have some experience slower speeds i guess? - but l's and p's drivers can't go over 110 in the NT can they? not they you would want them to !

she will be right, providing its only for short periods of time on straight roads doing 100
just be careful with roos, tell her to never try and swerve, always take the brunt of them as its easy to lose control and frontends are cheaper the lives. No night driving either!

Tell her she can drive from the QLD border to Cammoweal. Only about 10-20klm.

Yes, most certainly let her do it, but don't put her straight into a high stress situation to start with, give her some time behind the wheel beforehand.

I have worked as a driving instructor, be pro-active with your instruction, tell her what you want her to do a long way before she needs to do it, don't be re-active. Don't tell her after she should have done it.

Teach her to drive off the edge of the road with 2 wheels then to steer the car back on to the bitumen again, tell her to keep her hands firm on the wheel, then you gently grab the whell with her holding it, then gently guide the car off then back on, do this a few times till she feels comfortable, then let her do it herself, most kids get hurt/die because they haven't learnt this skill.

Build her confidence.

I would rather let her drive it on the open road at 100kmph than in a busy city. A slow car does 100 on the open road so the XR8 makes no difference.

On my L's the 1st car i ever drove on the road with no experiance was Dads 5 speed Manual BA XR8, other cars i drove were Nans C Class mercedes, her new E350 mercedes, and dads current Car a MKII GT... If its all insured of course let her.

I drive nans E350 which is worth $120k and im on my P's, had them since april, and they dont even think twice about letting me, its insured incase something happends... dad is also looking at getting an exemption so i can drive the GT

I was thinking camoweal to Isa. The road through there is all fairly new. Mostly straight with some gentle bends and hills for variation..... She drives well but thus far has only driven our fiesta or her vitara. Traffice should be reasonably light as well. And I think that P platers are limited to 100 in QLD?? Its 110 in NT. That suits me. Maybe it would be good experience in a controlled situation. Maybe.

Just Let Her Drive Firstly In A Back Street Some Were And Make Sure She Is Not Scared To Turn The Steering Wheel. A Friend Of Mine Decided To Take Her Naughbours Daughter For Her First Drive And The Road Was Turning But She Kept The Wheel Straight And Ran Up The Gutter And Into A Fire Hydrant The Car Was Sitting On The Fire Hydrant And Was Filling Up With Water.

Check that road, last time I went through there was still some single lane crap. That was early May this year.
Mind you, they were doing some serious road works... About bloody time too.

I had a mate come back through there about a fortnight ago, he reckons its some of the best road in QLD now.

last time i looked a high stress was instant ( or can be, a car coming at you on the wrong side ? anything ), and theres no time to teach, it hapens or it does not, were talking about a brand new out of the blocks first time driver arn't we ?

last year down here they scraped an entire family from the road, they were doing exactly as your saying, the young girl from memory put the back wheel out in the dirt , paniced , over corrected and slammed into an oncoming semi.

all because mum n dad thought it was cool to let the daughter drive the family hot rod.

outback that is not aimed at you but is a real story, and i will stand by if it is a fresh driver more practice first, but will be your call.

No offense but what a load of bull. I remember the big fuss(with regards to L platers and high powered cars) after the L plater did that in the HSV. The power of the car wouldn't come into play there. That could happen in any car.

I think Doc was referring to the panic of the situation, not the fact that they were in a hot rod or something with power

I had my licence for about a week when I drove from Perth to Adelaide, sharing the driving with my old man. I found the hardest part was to keep concerntration for long periods of time but I think overall I became a better driver for it.

If you have confidence in your daughters driving it may be benifical to her to get some good long distance driving under her belt. After all wouldnt it be better for her to get experiance at long distance driving with you in the car rather than with her friends or on her own.

let her drive it, if she can promise you it wont be damaged in any way. if she cant commit to that it's not you breaking your word.

No offence taken, good open debate on the forum can only be a good thing, and your right after that happened there was a lot of debate. and i also agree with it could have been any car.

i also think each car handles diferent / brakes diferent / steers diferent etc.

and the very first time in a car up the speed limits on the highway and having to find out in a hurry how it brakes / steers in an emergancy or handles normally, is just not my call for a brand new driver that has not even driven that car around the block.

Mate im no prude my daughter has driven my xr8's but i did not say to her here you go first drive and guess what we will fire it down the highway.

7 days after I got my L's I did Campbelltown to Bathurst and back for a weekend break.

A 1 or 2 months afterwards I did Campbelltown to Surfers Paradise in 12 hours including breaks. I explained to them that me driving at 80 and having caravans and semis either tailgating me or trying to overtake was a tad more dangerous than me driving at 105 or so that other Pacfic Hwy'ers were doing.

I now seem to concentrate for longer than most people I know and more accustomed to long stints of driving.

OBJ...let her have a go but unless they have improved the Camooweal/Isa section,to highway standard for the entire distance, I would choose somewhere else.

It is/was a very scary section of single lane with roadtrains coming at you and you had to have two if not four wheels in the dirt.

As an aside am going to send you a pm in the next 24hrs re the high court decision.

Let her drive, just only for short stints like no more than 1 hour at a time. Pick the better roads and guide her along.
