Depends which state.

I understand in Victoria that any type of forced induction whether it be turbo or supercharged is not P plate legal. Unless you prove you need it for your job. Like a builder may want a turbo diesel etc.

Plus let's be honest, a P plate on a new mustand is going to be a MASSIVE cop magnet especially with a dude driving it.

Ok the rules in NSW for both P1 and P2 level P plates are the following:
P platers are prohibited from driving cars that have a power to weight ratio higher than 130kws per tonne.

The Ford Mustang Ecoboost (in auto) weighs 1598kg. Which means for a car that weight you can have 207 kw. In this case the Mustand ecoboost is 233kw so yes it is illegal for a P plater to drive it.

ALL mustangs are on the banned list on the NSW RTA website.

Not quite.
Falcon ecoboost is on the approved list, XR6 turbo isn't.
Mustang ecoboost is on the banned list though.
AFAIK anything turbo diesel is also approved.

This is for Vic.

Mondeo and Focus XR5s used to be banned but are now approved also

Victorian laws have changed. You can drive turbocharged vehicles that meet the power to weight ratio guidelines and have a compliance plate on them from 2010 onwards. The Mustang is banned as it is not considered a "family type" (2 door coupe) vehicle nor is it considered a "lower performance" turbocharged vehicle. That's in Victoria anyway.

I feel lucky to have been on my P Plates before all these restrictions.

On my green P plates, I bought a demo BA XR6 Turbo ute, black, leather, hard lid...absolutely loved it. Most of my mates had SS utes, turbo's, pretty much all the stuff a "P" plater can no longer drive.

I wonder what the stats are on serious accidents before and after these restrictions, I would think mobile phone use would be more of a contributor than a higher powered vehicle...

im 19 with a bf xr6 mate and theres never a day that crosses my mind that i wish it could have been a turbo. The reality is there were so many ********* crashing into houses, being unable to control the cars. So since then i think around 2007 here in victoria, people like me have to sit and wait it out on our p's. Honestly sucks. The mustang though im suprised is banned.

Why are you surprised it's banned? It's not as powerful as the v8 version but 233kw in a 1598kg car is still quick. I think the car magazines have recorded the ecoboost mustang doing 14.1 sec 0-400m times. Keep in mind, because it's already turbo, the ability to get more power for minimal effort and cost is there. Some American tuners are already getting into the 11's with stock turbo and stock engine (see link below)

Remember it wasn't that long ago the stock SS and XR8 were doing low 14's and they were and still are banned.

Not all Focus XR5 Turbos are legal.

2010 model XR5T is, prior to that its banned, this to me makes a little mockery of the rules as the 2009/2010 XR5T is the same car

Nothing beats the pain of getting you p plates then the ban coming in, yet existing p platers were exempt. I don't miss getting pulled up for a licence check and the obligatory breatho for the v8 I was driving. Made my mates who didn't get their p's till they were 18 jealous though. The 5L could eat a 3.8 commodore any day, but the new laws are kind of sensible, for people who don't entirely understand the physics of cornering traction, I see the logic in limiting the straight line ability
