Right,
I am in the process of upgrading my desktop, and I have just purchased a ASUS P5K motherboard. I am using my existing case, which is a 400w power supply, and it says P4 compatible. I assumed that this motherboard would accept the same power connection. The connection on my power supply is 20pin, and on the new motherboard is 24 pins. I can physically connect the power to the board, but there is 4 pins on the end that are not connected to anything. These pins are +3volts, +12volts, ground and +5volts. looking at the other pins that are connected there is supply at least once for all the above... HELP PLEAESE

No - Upgrade your PSU and do right and you wont have any headaches, $65 should see you right for a decent enough one.

the standard 20 pin connector will work,
the extra 4 pins are useless at the moment, they are there but never used. as long as its p4 compatible aka has the extra 4 pin connector to go into the 4 or 8 port bit on the mobo it will be fine owning computershop and working in it has tought me alot... they want you to upgrade when you really dont need to

Holy crap with a P5K board I'm guessing you're running a CPU with 1333fsb?
I'd get a new power supply asap. Right now your stressing the outta ya PC. How many Amp's does the PSU have on the +12 section of the table? Also how many rails does it have?

if you know anything about electronics and computers....
the "500" watts a power supply gives in not 500 watts. divide it by 1/3'rd and you will get a true measure. if you want something good and reliable get a HEC i have a 750w running all my pc QX6800 2 x 8800GTX 4 x 72GB 15k SCSI 2 x 1TB Hitachi its all the speed, and all the power you can want. the "watt o meter" i have running is telling me im drawing 320w's and thats me coding a dvd

ok... just to confirm something...
below is a pic of the motherboard. Near the keyboard connection there is another 4 pin power supply. My current PSU has this connection as well as the 20 pin connection... Do I still need a 24pin connection? I have searched the net, and from what i have read i dont need a 24pin supply, if i also have the extra 4 pin connection... slightly confused.. :(

the extra 4 pins on the 24 pin psu dont do anything at this stage
just an excuse to sell you a psu when buying a new mobo :-/ it will be adapted, but not yet probally just like the 4 pins near the ps2 ports were needed to a few years go
