why is some old git who has lost the plot labelled as a hoon. The word is used way too much to cover any/every sort of traffic offence.

The word hoon seems to be currently used a 'Safety Card' much as racism etc has been used in the past...

Just read the paper and had to have a laugh! Yeah, the word "hoon" is taken way out of context these days.

Wide flat open empty, Wimmera plains. Probably not even dangerous. I bet if you asked the old buzzard he'd being doing that trip in from the farm for years.
1700+ cars impounded and barely a blip on the road toll. Make no mistake, speed kills. It's the when, where, how, who, factors that make it so. We have been over it a 1,000 times.

Problem;
The word "hoon" needs to be defined. Perhaps the bloke (or sheila) in charge could wack it in the 2010 edition of the dictionary. Then, and only then, will we be able to clearly define a "hoon". |

Could you imagine how slow his reaction would have been if someone walked onto the road.

One cannot assume the recorded speed is a constant;- that runs steady for kilometres on end. Most people will vary the speed according to conditions, they will back off the accelerator on approach to curves etc, then pick it up again on the departure. Some who are speed-limit conditioned, will stick at 'the limit' come what may and do come unstuck. Yes, he is guilty of exceeding the speed-limit, but is not necessarily driving dangerously or at a speed dangerous for the circumstances. Transpose that onto a built-up area, or with heavy traffic, then it can - become another matter. I recall reading of an 83 year old German fella, comparing his two sports cars, "I feel more comfortable in the Ferrari in the lighting of my cigar at 220km/h than in the Lamborghini". My old boss, goes to Italy and up through to Denmark each year to source furniture, she's 67 now, of speed and traffic here; 'Australian's just can't get it right can they?"! Anyhow, if he's been doing this for years - he's survived up to now. Guess he misses (//).

I had a chuckle when they said that he admitted that it was lucky they didn't get him earlier, as he was actually going faster.

In the paper it said something about the man not realising he was going that quick. He also said his 1999 Magna had surprising power and
"It just goes like the clappers". "It's the best car I have ever had, hands down". I'd say he's owned a few crap cars if the Magna is the best he's had. I doubt he could have mistakenly gone 160km/h. At some stage, some of us have gone that fast and it definitely feels different and the car works a bit harder too. He's accepted he's in the wrong and will cop whatever penalties he's up for. But the police sergeant said he didn't see them until they were within 150m, so his eyesight isn't too good - especially not good enough to deal with hazards at 160km/h

Didn't this happen on a country road, so about the only thing that would be wondering onto the hwy would be stray cattle or wildlife. 79 Years old, I'm guessing he has been driving like this for a wile, kinda takes the a hatchet to the speed kills argument, otherwise this guy should have been killed about 60 years ago!!

eHe was probably going that speed just to stay aleart and awake.
I used to go away skiing nearly every weekend durnig the warmer months up to the riverina region. Many a late friday and Sunday night was spent travelling the back highways from or towards Melbourne. I took the back roads as it was safer to do the higher speeds so I would stay wide awake. Get on the hume or the northern hwy and it was sleepy time at 100.

STIFF!
I know people in their 20's that have slow reactions and can't see jack. Go to Europe and you will see plenty old dudes sitting on 200 km/h plus. ones you get you eye in to perceive what it's all about, it will become OK. and you will not freak out any more. Aussies are manly lazy dopey drivers that don't concentrate on the road. Some years ago we had narrow bridge roads and trucks use to pass on them no problem. but now days the bloody same old bridge is a one way only with a give way sign. |

A reaction time of 1.3 seconds by 'normal' drivers , in my book is approaching intoxicated driving. Few drivers are that poor (I hope). I note the police opinion-references from the that story, and they are welcome to it in court:-) The bloke got caught exceeding the speed-limit, if all else is kosher, he should be fined for doing so, could be directed to take up a refresher course, or be sent to re-do the Peoples Republic of Victoria's knowledge test. He should then not exceed 100-110km/h because he will then understand the car will explode into a fireball. ** Don't think for a moment I'm a soft bastard re traffic penalties, I can see many NSW fine levels, beyond 'speed', that need BIG increases and enforcement. A old bloke in my old mans car club in Newcastle was caught at 82 tuning his car on a dual lane road with another man in his 70's and they got 180+ in a MG.
When stopped by the highway Police he said he was in control of car and he started to tell the copper that what speed he was doing and what oil pressure it was at and also what the car was handling like. The copper couldn't stop laughing and took his licence away from him . In court, he explained what he was doing and why he choose that road and all the oil pressures and dianostics on the car at all speeds. The judge gave him a 1 year good behaviour bond and loss of licence for 3 months. The judge was only in his fifty's and he said it was the oldest person to front him in all of his career. The old guy told the judge that he would've gone faster but he was not getting any more power . I have meet the guy and he is just a old hoon tinkering with his old car. The copper since has seen the guy at his house and now become mates : . Bloody MG does better than most cars on the road.
