Default NSW - Engineering a Pre-ADR Car

Another project I’ve got my eye on. Former race car, small British convertible from 1964. It’s got a lot of genuine period modifications but racing has become relatively inaccessible so the idea is to seek full rego - rather than be bound by historic registration and club membership.

I believe it needs engineering, as the carbs are Webers, it has a roll cage fitted and not sure on seats/belts. It also has an acrylic aero screen/deflector instead of full glass, wiper and heater delete. Ground clearance is reduced but suspension points appear unaltered, as also steering.

What I’m wondering about, is what kind of net costs are typically encountered for an engineer’s certification in NSW when there’s likely no need for weld identification, crack testing, fabrication to spec.

Curious to further hear any more recent opinions on NSW registration with respect to things like the above, it also has full bumper deletes and I’d consider fitting a dual master cylinder to be sensible despite unoriginal.

I do, but as it’s not mine at present and they’re not “for sale” pictures, I don’t feel free to wave them around.

Similar to this (especially the aero screen) but six years older, more “road ready” in terms of lighting and in white.

Poor old spitfire, I cant see why you cant get one registered, you just have to jump through the right hoops, if you can register a Ariel Atom copy here in Aus, I cant see why you cant.

You may need to keep the cage or a roll over hoop of some kind being a roofless vehicle.

I can't comment on the rules over there but I've pitted and passed caged cars here, the stipulations being they can't obstruct entry or exit from the vehicle (intrusion bars are a no no) or affect the operation of things like window winders, sunvisors etc. Aswell as affect sightlines/ vision.
I think the link Hayseed has provided would be the best start.

Isn't there modified club rego available in NSW now? (as opposed to historic where the car has to be stock)

Still has to be engineered and signed off and pass a blue slip to get onto the scheme.

I’m not anti-club, but at present don’t want to be bound by club rules/events otherwise. My exposure to three different car clubs has given the impression of a focus on gastronomy, not driving. Freedom to choose times, distances, locations is worth the price of full registration.

That one is beyond feasibility of the road IMO. You will find others around the range that will need a resto but can go on the road easier.

Ive always wondered about those cars, can they go alright with a few mods?

They’re still primitive. You get R&P, unboosted solid front discs, and a choice of tyres from Haida (etc) to Pirelli/Michelin. Wind noise. Road noise. Carbies, basic cooling system. No fun in the wet, either in handling or weather protection. With DCOEs, not frugal with fuel either. I think doing more than 250km/day would rapidly reduce your enthusiasm.

A good car for selfish solo driving, shared piloting with a fellow enthusiast, or torturing your tradwife in her obligatory polka-dotted scarf and Ray-Bans.

Routes to suit, for example in NSW Gundagai-Junee-Narrandera-Temora-Cootamundra-Gundagai. Or Cessnock-Wollombi-Broke-Bulga-Singleton-Belford-Cessnock.

That's why the club I joined interested me so much, it's not really a car club, with no events or meetings. It's just a couple of blokes who do it to help people get cars onto club rego, and they pass on their small joining/yearly fee to charity.

It's brilliant.

I’ll rate it for honesty. A bit like the Keg Club at one university up here, who spent their dues plus club grants on quarterly drinking sessions with hired keg setups.

Of the two looped routes I posted, most car clubs I experienced would stop at the first leg for lunch/picnic and call it job done.
