Default Wages in Automotive industry.

Hey everyone.

I am just wondering as to what wages within the automotive industry are roughly?
For the automotive trades.
I understand there can be quite large variation depending on employer etc but just a ball park figure.

Fully qualified mechanic at at a dealer service dept is on $15.50 per hour. Fairly usual. Maybe get a few more $ per hour if you have been around a while. Dont usually find too many mechanics on more than $40K a year, from what I have heard, especially in dealers. Non dealers, Im not sure. Wouldnt have thought there was too much difference.

And Im not sure about very specialised guys either, who have a lot of tuning knowledge or experience or has specialised in something else performance-wise.

I was on $16.50 at a metro dealership 5 years ago. From what Ive some of the guys there now are on $21 an hour. In the country where I work now, the rate is $19.50 casual

When I was at Ford some of the mechanics were earning more than engineers!

All depends on where you work I guess.

I see you are in WA, stick to resouces!

At the Toyota dealership I used to work at the mechanics were on $25 p/hr. Work 8-4.30 with 1/2 lunch mon-thurs & 8-2.30 with 1/2 lunch fri. There was a bit of overtime if you wanted to do it.

It was one of the higher paid dealerships because they were losing mechanics to the mines.

hi for assembly in ford $22/hr lvl3 not too bad for doing the same thing 500 times a day but the cost per employee per car = 50 cents

Money is getting better , if you have an lpg ticket well over $35.00 an hour but a std mech from around $20.00 , which is poor when an order picker at woolies on arvo shift get $25,00 okus $2.00 shift allowance ,

my mate is buying an established panel shop
4 painters @ 57k a year
4 panel beaters @ 55k a year
1 mechanic @ 48k a year

Is this the going rate for a panel beater? My bf finishes his aprenticeship as a panel beater in 6 months, and 55k is ALOT more than what he earns in a year.

I know the others at his work are on a pretty decent wage. Not sure how much but its pretty good.

i finish my panel beating apprenticeship in 4 months, had a chat to the boss about the $$$ when i turn tradesman, he basically said its up to me, do i wanna be a $500 a week panel beater or do i wanna be a $700 a week panel beater

just depends on the quality of your work in the end

sydney . bmw . peugeot , audi, landrover . up to $60 000 for 40 hours. day work . + overtime . not a lot really in sydney.

If anyone is brave enough to make the move, there are some very good paying car tech's (mechanics) jobs in the NT. The mines and even the dealerships pay very very well. Some even supply housing or a housing allowance. The qualified guys at the holden/toyata/nissan/hyudai/mitsubishi/honda dealer in the Alice can earn 70k PA.

There is no way in hell I'd be a mechanic unless it was in a performance based workshop, but you don't just fall into jobs like that. Servicing camry's all day would have to take a toll on your love for cars. In places that compete with mining companies for tradesmen they have no choice but to provide a decent wage, other than that it would be pretty ordinary.

Do you think that comment above really is a good move for those who are considering to take part in an apprenticeship in motor mechanics?

We need mechanics, even if they are rip offs sometimes, we need 'em.

Do you really become a mechanic purely for your interest in hotted up cars?

Almost seems like it means I'm in the wrong job with a Toyota dealer because I love Fords (or maybe I should be working at the Porsche dealer in Melbourne...) at the end of the day you have to put food on the table..

I think that doing an apprenticeship with a place like a mainstream dealer would be good for experience also...

Im considering becoming an apprentice diesel mechanic. Im told they earn more then regular mechanics and can also do light vehicles like a regular mechanic if they wanted too.

Still not sure what i want, but i have to try something out...

Any diesel/regular mechanics out there with advice wuld b great!

Im a 1st year Fitter and Turner at Hm Gem engines, so im on a whole $6.70 a hour, but i enjoy the work.

I have the job of building the Holden 6's and 8's, which does hurt but its a job. Ill just wait my time to get onto the E series motors!

Mechanics wages and conditions are generally atrocious!
I work at a rural ford dealer as leading hand and in charge of tyres and wheel alignments and I get 15.75ph plus bonus if things are busy. I generally pull 600 in the hand per week, but after the bills are paid it's not much.
The thing that upsets me is the fact we have to sweat our guts out in a shed that gets up to 45 degrees in summer while the boss/salesmen/workshop managers sit around in comfortable air conditioning. In this day and age that sort of treatment of workers should not be allowed!
A union for mechanics would be very good for all of us involved in this sweatshop industry.

Yes but if you have an interest in the product then you will enjoy work more and tend to do a better job of it.

plant and or diesel mechanic is the way to go as more and more trucks are getting on our roads and they need to run 24 - 7 . alas big wages . , work always there . breakdown all the time. $100 000 ++

Good choice. A mate of mine is a diesel mechanic and he was taking home over a grand a week working for Mack. He now works for Qantas fixing ground equipment for something like $1500 per week. There's definately more money in diesel.
