Just bought a Cortina!

Hi all (from NZ)

Just purchased a Mk5 (TF I think you call it) Cortina. Being in NZ I managed to pick up the rarer Ghia 2.3V6 Auto. My dad owned one from nearly new for around 6 years and has longed for another one ever since selling back in the late 80s. We went halvsies. Straight body, no rust, 100,000 original kms, mint interior, mechanically sound but the exterior paint needs doing. Nice wee project!!

I know there are differences between your TF and our Mk5, but are there any things I should get done??

Get it this coming week hopefully as it has to be trucked down from up North. Looking forward to it :-)

The main issue with the MkV (along with all Cortinas) is rust. They allegedly had better corrosion protection than the earlier models but it's still been a bit of an issue.

We didn't get the 2.3L V6 here or the power steering it came with (except on a couple of models) but otherwise there isn't much different to the TF.

Great car. Wish we got the V6's here in aus.
You can see why they rust, if you look under the arches of my low km TD theres barely a lick of paint in there.

Yes really looking forward to getting it, from my look around it it seemed remarkably clear of signs of rust but I will keep my eyes peeled.

I used to have a gold coloured TF Ghia. Straight 6cyl, Auto, power steering, etc. I ended up putting a 4 speed manual in it.
Was a really cool car, but I get screwed over when I sold it. You don't see them around anymore.
Got a lot of rust inside the boot near the boot seal.

The front suspension and where it bolts to is completely different to aus cars
Yours will be the same as mk3

Update

I got the car today, it goes really great... up until around 90-100km/h.
When I got onto the motorway and stuck at those steady speeds for about 20 seconds it would run fine then a cough then engine cut out and I had to coast to a stop, managed to do that 3 times before being able to head on an off ramp to safety. Each time I waited 2mins ish before cranking and the car fired straight into life. At town speeds and stop start it went fantastic never missed a beat.
What would/could cause this to happen? Just had new plugs, recent coil change, 1/4 tank of premium fuel. Any ideas??

Don't take this as gospel because it's probably got a mechanical fuel pump, but I had a car with an electronic fuel pump do something similar when it crapped out.

Fuel filter ?

Yes, most likely the filter, but definitely a fuel supply issue. The reason it runs for 20sec or so is because the fuel in the bowl. Once that runs out cough and stall.

Maybe it has been sitting for a while and the tank, lines and probably even the carby has muck in them.

We had a 1982 3 litre GLS V6 ,bought brand new in South Africa,which was a brilliant car.
Came with power steering as standard.
Was yours built in NZ,or a U.K. Import ?

Ours was also Silver,and looked almost identical to yours,except it had the round spot lights ,and 3 pin stripes under the side mouldings.

Brings back wonderful memories.

The 3L would have been nice.......As too would have been a 4speed auto or even a 4 speed manual option with our 2.3.
Our ones were all made locally in NZ.

Were they popular in NZ ?
The MK4 and MK5 were extremely popular in SA,from 1977-1984,and it actually dominated the medium sector sales,as they did in the U.K. and parts of Europe.

The replacement Sierra was never as popular,as buyers wanting traditional sedans flocked to Toyota Corollas and Cressida,and Volkswagen Jettas,which then all became the top sellers .

yes same here. Very popular. Our road police had a fleet of them.

Cortinas from the MK3 in 1971 right up to the Mk5 in 1983 were the most popular selling car in NZ by a country mile. Every 2nd house had one in the driveway I recall. Traffic police used them as well. When the Cortina was replaced by the Telstar and the Sierra wagon it was a sad day in NZ motoring history

a couple of miss truths here The Mk5 2.3 Ghia was fully imported from the UK was top Cortina model 1982 price was eye watering NZD$19500 only came as Auto next down was NZ assembled 2.0litre Ghia,in Auto and Manual NZD14500, GL was Deleted and S Kiwi Cortina replaced it
