It's pretty scary what hackers can do!
I would guess most sites would be vunerable. If they can break in to sites like the government, defense force, etc, I'm sure sites like this are fair game.

If someone does that to our site I will be very angry.. only a few people have seen me very angry.
It is the most pathetic thing to do to someone, it is just as bad as keying someone's car because you don't want them to have a better car than your own and should be dealt with accordingly. We all know what would happen if we caught someone keying our car.....
Nothing is invulnerable, that's the sad fact of life. Whatever someone can do, someone can undo.

Probably just a script kiddy. i.e. moron who piggybacks off the intelligence of others. If so they probably didn't cover there tracks.

Me thinks this will be an easy conviction for the AFP's high tech crime squad. Yes it can happen to this forum. Hope the admin's are all patched up...

If you are connected to the Internet, you are vunerable. It is that simple. It all depends on the motivation levels of the attacker.

All I can say is that ensure you have a valid backup of all the content you want to keep in a format that makes it easy to do a rebuild from scratch. EG don't backup the formatted content, but the database raw content. Then you can load hopefully the latest version in case you ever get hit, then restore all content and recreate the forum layout as you see fit.

Though i'm sure the AFF mod's know all this.

Just another demonstration of why nothing is safe on the Internet. Security through firewalls, port blocking, obscurity and more are just risk mitigation. If you have an open service on the internet you are vulnerable.

Better things would be like (assuming a Unix variety):
* Take full dump for my own malicious means (eg ozhonda) ftp that back to me
* Check locally attached tape drive/backup routine and check if tape is still loaded, if it is "mt rewind; dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rmt/0n"
* modify dns to point to screwed up version of web site
* then format the data drives...

The only good thing about idiots who do this is that they tend to have big mouths and skyte about it. It may take a bit of time but eventually they are always discovered.
It is quite difficult to hide on the internet despite the urban myths.

We have, on this forum, some people who are actually quite skilled in IP forensics as well as others who are skilled in investigation and interrogation of "suspects".

There are also some here who are quite creative when it comes to devising an appropriate resolution to any issue.

It's interesting and does raise some legal issues for both the site operator, the hacker/s, the sites clients and what might have been said about certain clients/members. Action can be undertaken if something is said that in anyway is taken to vilify an individual and that is then made public, such as we see in this case.

So, issues of litigation both-ways can come into the fold. One should always declare financial interests. Such declarations are a requirement in many media industries and serve to notify contributors and viewers.

Domestically, at the end of the day the only law enforceable is that passed by a parliament.

Looking at the site, much of what I see is just young person, immature slanging which achieves nothing but to discredit it in totality, something to stay away from.

See I have little care in doing my banking or purchases over the internet. I know the risks, and the levels of security put in place. For the level of convience it offers over walking into a physical branch between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday I am happy to take that mitigated risk.

Why would people bother doing this. It goes beyong revenge.. if the dude has a grudge i would dare say there are far beter ways of dealing with things rather then interupting "9500" members fun and enjoyment.. for example more the heck on and get over it..

Well i hope the site gets fixed and the guy gets caught and delt with accordingly...
