Default Performance Mods

***Sticky Please***

After much debate and too many new threads where everyone just repeats themselves, here is a list of Performance mods to do to your car. This list is only mods without having to open the engine. I have left this very basic without getting into brands or specs because some people may want/expect different results. Please note, some prices may not be accurate:

Performance

  • 2.5” Cat back Exhaust - $400
  • Extractors - $400
  • Hi-Flow Air filter or Pod - $40 - $140
  • 90mm piping from air box to throttle body – price varies on materials used
  • Hi Stall Converter - $1000
Handling

  • Lowering – price varies on brand and results - $500+
  • 17” or 18” Rims – price varies on brand and quality – approximately $1600 - $2000
  • LSD – Best to get done with diff upgrade
  • Diff upgrade – varies on mechanic and result - $1000+
  • Full suspension works (sways bars, camber kits, etc) – price varies on what you get done and components used $1000+
Final Mods

  • ECU Flash tune - $1000
  • Short Shifter (Manual only)
  • Body kit - $1000+

Prices are very on the low side... Those things, always end up costing more.

A normal bodykit is like $1.2-1.5k. Then another ~$800 to get it painted & fitted.

Lowering for a normal falcon, is like ~$800. Because you need front struts to suit the lower springs. Otherwise you need full new shocks.

Just a starting point.... Do you think we should do this up all properly, and make an article about it inc. pics, etc...?

Technically no because it increases the weight of your vehicle and slightly alters aerodynamic performace.... but so minute that you won't notice it...

I have started an article. I will finally save it as a PDF. If you notice pics of your car on here and would like them removed, please let me know.

Performace Mods

On the other hand, if you would like your car to star (yes, thats right, Star!) in this article, post up the pic, and let me know what it's for! And if you find a better pic for something... eg. exhausts, please post that up too!

Can I get your suggestions on the order of how the things should be next? I Reckon Hi-Stallie, Flash Tune, Rims, Lowering...?

The thing about the tune is that it should be put last of performance mods . I reckon diff first then hi stall. Hi stalls feel sloppy with standard gears of non xr au's. Lets help build a guide from reallife experiences..Ill be happy to help as the only thing I havent tried a respray.

Another mod to consider is toughenning the automatic boxes internals to last a bit longer and maybe mods to suit the drivers needs...eg valve body mods.

well I'm stuck on #5. Do you think it should be a cam; diff/LSD; torque converter; flash; rims, suspension?

I put rims then suspension so you can figure out how low you would like to go depending on your rims....

I see a bit of an issue here. If this is based around a Forte/Futura/Fairmont there would be one sequence, an XR6 is another sequence and I'm thinking the Fairmont Ghia would be different again. Then there is the V8 variants.. different sequence again.

Share with us... most people doing mods, are ppl with an I6... why would an XR6 be any different?

XR6 has a shorter stock diff and better cam and head then other models.
Fairmonts are much heavier meaning they would probably do with a diff gear change earlier.
Fairmont Ghia has the same engine as an XR6 but higher weight too.

The main problem is many of these cars will benifit at different levels from the same mod based on whats in it stock. I know that if I had a 3.08 diff I'd get it changed before I got a stall.. but with 3.45's the stall is a better choice. Of course, if I wanted just a nice highway cruiser I'd get totally different mods that an ET monster. Maybe 3.45's in the cruiser but 3.9's on the drag setup. I'd probably buy them in a different sequence of priorities too. The variations are as endless as the (cars x usage x funds).

My god youse have knowledge.
Quick question, you say in the article about dumping the exhaust before the rear bar, i read that it is illegal to do this in western australia, is it the same in all states???

Great work on the article though, easy to read and heaps good advice.

sorry read the "check legalities" part for the side exhaust, but would still like to hear about the rear bar
