Unhappy Rear Main Seal

MB Titanium TDCi 2010

Car was in for it's normal annual service and got the normal call saying XYZ needs fixing. Except this time they said the rear main seal is leaking and needs replacing.

Garage are sending through the full job scope by email 2moro but the quoted costs are $1350. They say that it's and engine and tranny out job which is presume that it probably is, not much space under there.

Has anyone had a similar problem and what did it cost.

I wouldn't think it need be both engine and trans. get them to monitor it. Mine is leaking but not enough to push for a fix just yet.

I thought my rear main was leaking too but further investigation it appears to be coming down from the firewall side of engine up near fuel pump. Still haven't located the source but surely easier than rear main....

So was mine leaking and told when having a service done prior to a huge 4K Melb, QLD, Melb trip. Was told to monitor oil and 10K later had not used any noticeable oil.

If not noticeable on ground or in oil usage try a product oil additive that is supposed to expand engine seals.

Plenty around and priced from $15 to $100+

Google...
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=o...hrome&ie=UTF-8

I haven't bothered doing anything and cannot see any oil on the ground.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

Both our TDCIs have been leaking at the rear main seal for a couple of years. Has been very very slowly worsening but still not enough to make a mess, just a drop hanging off the bell housing. No oil top ups required between 15000km changes, I just wipe it off and have a look next time.
Seems after many years of car making the main seal isn't solved.

Thanks for the replies guys. I hope to get the car up on ramps this weekend so that I can have a look for myself and see what it going on.
I've got a big-ish trip coming up next week, roughly 1000km's, so this will be good to use as a gauge when i return to see what the leak is like after looking this weekend.
Off to take part in this year's Cape to Cape, mtb racing, for those that know.
Hopefully it's just a small weep and nothing more serious for know. If it's a bit more than a leak then I might be tempted to try one of those oil additives and see what that does.

I got the car up on the ramps today and set about this leaking rear seal.
Wasn't too impressed on first sight as there was oil where there shouldn't be any. I kept going and took a few more covers and pipes off to see if I could get a better picture of what's going on.
As I was doing this my eyes were drawn to the turbo and the air outlet. There was oil and first thought was bloody oil seal has gone, here comes my next job.
So I got things cleaned and while I was doing so the amount of oil is bare minimum, just looks worse with some road grime stuck to it.
The small black plastic covers that i removed let you see more of the flywheel teeth and there was more oil on the back of the flywheel. Yes some at the bottom of the housing but again very little. There is a slight weep somewhere but not 100% sure where from. Could be coming from the cover of the sump gasket where it joins to flywheel housing and tranny.
All clean now and I check again in 2 weeks.
Turbo side was all good, no oil inside turbo so major happy with that.

Q: Air Inlet to Turbo - what is the silver box just before Turbo, see picture.

My MB has a slight leak that I noticed when I did the first out of warranty oil change 3 years ago. There's some oil on the undertray, but the leak has stayed pretty much the same.

I suspect it started leaking while it was still under warranty.

There's been at least one other thread here, so it seems to be a common issue on the diesel Mondeos.

I was just wondering how everyone was going with the leaking rear main seals? I noticed on Saturday when I did an oil change that mine appears to be leaking. But like the rest of you I just cleaned and will monitor to see if it gets worse. I don’t fancy tying to take the DCT out to fix it and don’t really want to know how much it’s going to cost to have a mechanic fix it.
I’ve got 165,000km on the clock and on the previous oil change I didn’t notice anything. So just wondering how many k’s you guys have got on yours and how much more it’s leaking from when you first noticed it?

When I did my timing belt i saw the turbo was wet with engine oil and had washed it. As above it's clean still 14K kms later. The Rear main oil seal still leaks but I'm not bothered yet it's just enough to reach to the bottom of the sump every time I service it, so it gets a spray down with degreaser and I still monitor it. I'm not losing engine oil as there's no change on the dip stick.

I'm still yet to check out around the HP.Fuel.Pump if there's a leak in that back corner but the last time I had the airbox out I checked the vacuum valves and it were all clean down the back there.

Doesn't seem to have worsened when I did my first service 120K to now 214K. My trans will be flushed this service (got a 20L drum a month ago) so will investigate again soon.

214K - I'm catching you.....

My leak is much the same as yours, Just gets to the dripping stage between the transmission and engine at the 7500km service interval. I degrease and wipe down and go again....

My MY 2011 diesels have a drop of oil from the rear main seal at engine oil change intervals (15000km). Looks a very slow progression, so I'm not concerned. 195000km.

One that has me stumped is where oil drips from the fuel pump inlet metering valve, used to be just the LX but now both have it. I'm thinking UV dye sometime.

Anyone else see oil dripping from the fuel pump area?

Shouldn't take you too long with the little mileage I do these days.

Car had a month sitting in the driveway whilst I was overseas for a month then coming home and breaking my arm a week later the second week in June.

Just coming good thank heavens. (x-ray today)

PS: I just noticed a build up of green moss on the passenger window sill. (Good old Melb weather) Any suggested spray treatment for it after cleaning?

High.press cleaner, no need to treat after that, works on paving, rocks and the like.

I give you a fighting chance, I'm on holidays for the next two weeks so not so many kms.

I've done 25K km since the middle of February in the Mondeo alone not to mention what I've done in the cruiser. That includes a couple of weeks when i had dpf troubles and i drove the cruiser most days.

Yeah I thought of that but wanted to avoid dragging it out with this bloody broken arm.

LOL The biggest problem is remembering to tackle it apart from when I jump in it to go some where. Broken arm, dementia thank god the car is behaving itself.

Oil change today. I saw a drop of oil on the 'bell housing'
Years ago an old timer noticed an oil drop on my falcon during a roadworthy and said quote 'it's probably been there a long time'

When buying my S/H BF wagon I managed to get it over a set of pits. Was told to look for a leaking main rear seal and sure enough a weep was detected. Asked the seller if I could take it to the local dealer for assessment. The dealer said it would never get through rego with the leak and it was a $800 job. Told the seller and he came down $500. Three months later went for a rego check to the guy I always use and he said it could last like that for the rest of the cars life and not to worry unless I saw drips on the ground.
It's no wonder some call them stealers.
