Default How lucky are we.

For those that do not live in the Territory since jh has announced the emergency plan.

From now on in The Alice you cannot buy alcohol unless you show your drivers license and then are only allowed to buy one item i.e. 1bottle spirits...or 1 cask of wine or one bottle of wine.

YOU CANNOT buy anymore than 1 item of any alcoholic beverage from a shop..however if you have the mindset you can flit from shop to pub etc.

Are'nt you lucky you don't live in The Territory.

I am, but has absolutely nothing to do with the way alcohol is purchased. Don't see the big deal myself.

Very tough measures. Although most of the posters on this forums would know me as a red blooded lefty, after 11 long painfull years of Johnie at the controls, I support these measures. My wife is a special needs teacher here in the Alice. Some of the stories she has to tell are horific. But out in the remote areas that surround the Alice things are even worse. When you have (my wife) a young girl of perhaps 10 years old coming to school still bleeding from her vagina because of a visit from Uncle XXXXX the night before, you simply cannot do anything but support Howards new measures.

I hope that the mods can tolerate what I have just written, but in our own small way, perhaps this will help people understand just how bad it is out here. I have eluded to how things were in past comments and have at times been chastised (SP?) for what I have written. Maybe political correctness has over rided the truth.

If in anyway anyone who reads this thinks that Howard is wrong in doing what is being done, think seriously about the children. And would you tolerate it if they were white????

Cheers all. Good post MO.

Well, if it helps then why not. You cant say "ok white people can do what they want, but the others no love for you".

Victorians get speed camera's, NSW people get tankers running aground and the odd riot, QLDers have Kane Toads and crazy bananna related issues, SA have funky prisons, WA is to far away from everything, and Tas...well Tas has itself I guess. Everyone has something!

Sounds good to me, I couldnt care less if they did that everywhere. Buy one bottle of something and get tanked, you dont need to mix anyway. And obviously if theres a problem and it needs to be fixed, then whats wrong with it?

I see where you are coming from. But at the moment I dont see this as a situation that will be an issue other than the NT and perhaps parts of FNQ and parts of WA.

At the moment I can walk into any bottle shop and buy what I want in any quantity. The shops are already refusing to serve certain individuals. But they always seem to find a way of getting hold of booze of some kind. In the Alice at the moment, mouth wash is an under the counter item. Apparently it tastes OK with coke.

And just to add fuel to the fire we have been here for 200 hundred years and in that time what have we done to assimilate the indigenous...not bloody much!

Also ex senator Noel Pearson who is of Aboriginal dessent stated one of the worst things the white fella did was to give the black fella SIT DOWN money...the dole.

Now to further part of my point ...why should we have to suffer restrictions becuase of our forebears stupidity.

What happened to work for the dole? We have that in VIC im pretty sure. Agree with most of the above, something needs to be done. Very easy to complain though; its the first step in a looooooong process.

We shouldn't have to. But because of gutless "leaders" we now find ourselves in the situations that we are in.

If these measures dont work, Aboriginal Australia will become extinct. And if they do become extinct, it will be their own fault.
There is no going back to the wondering days of the hunter gatherer nomads of 200 years ago. Mind you, they have the land to live that way if they choose to.

Yeah I know, I just dont want to see the thread go downhill fast (and it will).

Look in all honesty, the way I see it is regardless of what was done or not done in the past, it is the present that we and all those in NT should be concerned about. In 21st century Australia it's just unacceptable for anybody, regardless of race or background, to be living in the conditions that they are up there. There is a problem and it needs to be fixed, and if this is the only way to do it (which it seems to be), then so be it.
