I hear these are great things to start with. Cheap (within $100 sometimes I hear) improves power and fuel economy. But then again, I've heard they also can do nothing.
Anyone have some unbiased 3rd party opinions on these things? |

id be interested in this awell if there are any proes out there.
ive looked into it and alot of guys out there are making set ups that suck air from in the engine bay which from my understanding does SH*& all without cold air from outside the engine bay. alot of the mods ive seen are adding an intake rather than re locating the original. does it really do that much and whats the right way to do it ? is it beter to just chuck a filter that will filter out less and get the intake to a position that it can suck in fresh cooled air? |

I was looking at different induction kits but as The R was saying they look as though they suck in hot air from the engine bay. I was runing a cold air induction set up on Laser Linx and it definitely made a difference but had the cold air hose connected to lower front spoiler and was retuned.
Have just purchased a pipercross filter for the WT 1.6 from UK total cost is AUD$70 landed. Will let you know what difference if any it makes. According to other forums you should be able to notice some improvement, for $70 cant go to far wrong, induction kits were a few hundred, but sucking in engine bay air whats the point.............

I believe the J1 kit channels outside air into a massive cone filter, but may still suck some warm air at idle.

Yea, the J1 kits look a bit pricy at 200+ pounds a pop, plus shipping and fitting. Though it's probably the best out of the lot.

Ebay have got the K&N 57i kit for GBP120 including post but i dont know if thats still going to be sucking hot air...............
Has anyone tried that "Electric super charger induction kit" its listed as GBP121 including post but i dont think it would be al that crash hot????????

somers: electric supercharger kits are useless junk designed to be sold to people who have no idea about cars, no electric fan can spin fast or hard enough to cause positive pressure in a internal combustion engine.
Caydus: A cone filter will alter the induction noise, but if you mount the filter inside an enclosure (which you have to do by law in most states) the difference should not to be apparent. Also keep in mind that changing the filter to a pod will void your warranty, unless you go for a K&N panel filter like danny and tenille have. Personally I'm going for a K&N Apollo unit which is a self contained pod filter system. I am using this as I will be able to mount it inside the factory airbox for that stealth look whilst also using the factory MAF sensor in the top of the airbox. Also when at the track or drags I will be able to surround the filter unit with dry-ice to cool the intake air even more. Most systems (excluding the K&N 57i) DO NOT allow for the factory MAF sensor, which your engine definitently needs, although I'm sure there are ways around this. Another thing to consider is the crankcase breathing system. By law this cannot vent to atmosphere thus rendering "mini-filters" illegal. The two ways around this are to set up an oil catch can which will require emptying at regular intervals or to plumb the breather back into the air intake like all cars do from the factory (small piece of sponge in the bottom left of the airbox.) This is another benefit of the apollo system as it allows for the breather to be plumbed into the system before the filter. That Apollo filter looks pretty promising to me as well, looks like i may have to look into it a bit further.
Personally I really dont want to alter the sound. Mate of mine was just telling me about his induction roar addiction. Ends up driving harder, using more fuel and getting booked for speeding :P |

Go to j1 induction systems website in the UK and they have dyno graphs for their system fitted to the MK7 Fiesta (which is what I have and make claims of around 6% power increase. Considerably more expensive ($400) than the cheapies out there but the power figure shouldn't be much different between brands. I find the j1 is far more impressive as it is a complete filter/housing that slides into the original Fiesta mounts and they have filters and not the more common chinese elements. The j1 looks more 'factory' compared to the american made Steeda and is much lighter. And the bottom line? Yes, a mod you can feel bye the seat of the pants and makes a great noise. Cheers.

Is the J1 system enclosed??? Or is it an exposed filter? because if so it will get your car defected in a heartbeat.

It's closed when the hood is down and exposed when the hood is up. From what I understand here in victoria it's perfectly legal and I'm an ex-mechanic who did roadworthies. It's been checked when pulled over by the coppers and it was A ok! As far as cool air, the j1 uses the cool air ducted from the original air inlet thru the grill and when still it's shielded from the engine. What state r u from?

Sounds good, although I don't think it would fly here in NSW, cops are pretty strict about enclosed filters. Loved the look of the J1 but seeing as I'm trying to keep my fez 100% legal I don't want to risk it.
As I said above i'll use an enclosed apollo inside a modified factory box, will look stock when you ope the bonnet but should work pretty well using both the original snorkel and possibly a secondary intake from either the front grille or the LHS 'brake duct.' Thoughts?

I have been running the pipercross air filter for about 1,000km's now and wanted to update this thread. It definitely sounds better but as far as performance goes there has to be some difference but it is hardly noticeable at this stage. There is a big difference between the pipercross and the standard air filter so its definitely getting more air, just not cold air............

I'm interested in the results you get from these. The wife's auto WT makes some impressive revving sounds in the lowest two gears (presumably to get up to the higher, more economical gears), but is a bit shorter in sound and grunt from then on. I probably wouldn't do anything to risk the warranty, but I'd certainly like to hear/see what you think.
Having had a look under the bonnet, it looks like the airbox is readily accessible, and there is a handy vent in in the LX where the foglights would go in the Zetec. The design of the foglight blank also lends itself to a stealth mod (cut out the inserts) more than that on my CL Focus.

Just changed my own filter. Bought a K&N Panel Filter and dropped it into the airbox, replacing the standard filter.
The airbox is really easy to get to and open and close. It's just held shut by 4 hex screws, not a phillips head or flat head, gotta have a screwdriver with a thingy at the end like those keys Ikea give you. Really easy to just remove all 4 screws and lift it open, pull out the old filter, stick the new one in and away you go. Standard Airbox Standard Filter Fresh K&N Panel Filter TBH, sounds no different, feels no different either... But meh, replaced a filter that needed replacing anyway. |

Is the K&N thinner than the stock filter? That was the first thing I noticed about the Pipercross. I also didn't notice sound and/or low speed performance increases, but I have been impressed with at highway cruising speeds - responds quickly to throttle and seems "smoother" somehow.

Yea, it's probably half the thickness of the stock, and probably the same way when it comes to weight too. I can definitely see it being less restrictive.
Thinking on it, it should become more apparent at highway cruising speeds like you said, more air is getting crammed in, but yea, the lack of difference at city speeds is a bit of a buzzkill. |

*shrug* not much to regret i guess. The good thing about a panel filter is it's just drop in. If you want to remove it, then pull it out and put the stock back in, it's just 4 screws away.

I modded my air intake a few month ago, i posted a thread up here.And there was differences i have now added to my design regarding cold air induction and let me tell you i have one fast 1600 car,im not posting pics because i cant be bothered no one seems to take any interest,but i have the confidence to say if anyone wants to go head to head with me on the strip i will happily do so with confidence.I will say this though to compensate for the amount of cold air my car is taking in the car has remapped to match fuel and i have lost between 20 and 30 klm worth of fuel per tank depending how hard i drive it but i can live with that for the gains i have got.
PS.and it cost me all of $6.20

Yea, I'm definately not going to dispute your claim on that, I read your thread and it was facinating. It's definately something I'll come back to when the warrenty runs out.
Which is pretty much the plan, keep everything close to stock as possible, if there are mods, make them simple and easily reversable. Then when warrenty runs out, then I can go do whatever mod I can within reason. |
