Going to have a little bit of a rant about my experience with my AU. I have had the engine and diff rebuilt in it that was all well and good the XR6 has done a few K's and I wanted to replace the gearbox being manual i had the cash but ford have gon and put a manual box in the AU that no other models share so its is hard to find another AU 5 speed to put in. Now this morning on the way to wor the tailshaft snapped and guess what ford have put in a unique to the AU tailshaft the auto ones do not fit the manual unlike the E-series where most of the parts are intechangable. Thanks FORD for being wa^&ers and making it hard to get parts for the AU!!!!!!

I would say you haven't looked hard enough. There are plenty of blokes who have done auto to manual conversions, and they got gearboxes from somewhere. Tailshafts don't snap without abuse, so perhaps you need to stop blaming Ford, and look within?

Yeah... Especially since you've gone through a diff as well... Where are you? There are specialist ford wreckers in just about major city, surely it can't be that hard???

Im not blaming ford for build qaulity im more stating that they have made the AU with specific parts for that model which is annoying. EB to EL boxers and driveashafts are interchangable AU's are not. There is a tailshft specificaly for the AU 6 5sp and the auto is different. The car has 330, 000ks on it and yes it does get driven harder than your average car.

Also, if you really want to run an older style T5, I'm sure you could, but it may require a custom bellhousing and tailshaft - it's not impossible though.

The AU XR tailshafts were different from the AU forte/Fairmont etc tailshafts anyhow.. they didnt explode at 180km/h!

Get it from mal wood. Going by the way you thrash it you should get tougher bits anyway.

Only the XR's and SWB T series (and I believe all SWB IRS models) had the "non-limited" tailshaft. Effectively an SR is just a Forte with some extra goody bits added.

also, i dont think bomber was saying he wanted parts from earlier falcons, he was saying that the e-series parts were intercahangable with other e-series models (ie eb forte tailshaft would fit ef xr6) and that the au pieces were not (ie you cant use au forte tailshaft in au xr6) but is it possible that the ba shaft would fit the au? might be worth a try

My falcon gets thrashed hard every single time I drive it but I havent popped a diff in it yet, done a gear box or snapped a tail shaft. Yours must cop an absolutely MASSIVE HUGE flogging to have this stuff happening.

The ECU controls the speed limiter. If you have an XR6 ECU then the car thinks its an XR6 and the speed limiter is either significatly raised (some had 210kph limiters) or doesnt exist at all. Having the XR6 tailshaft also means that taking it above 180kph on a track day is not risking catastrophic failure either.

engine gearbox and diff ? FFS what are you doing to this think i drive an AU cab that has done 827000KS without even having the head off yes a couple of tranny rebuilds but no diff or tailshaft and belive me some of the drivers treat her rough but she keeps going if you don't like the new technology which is an improvement bung E series running gear in then when u kill it it will be cheaper to replace but not as good

Want to see what taking the speed limiter off a lower spec model does .... ask data_mine ... there was a thread in Fordmods with pics of what happens ... lucky he was on a dyno at the time and not on the road.

are you guys refering to the aluminium tailshaft?
if so i got one in my series 1 forte 1998 model. hehehe but its an ex cop car, also has the 240km/h dash. does that mean my car is limited to 180 or can it go above..... i'll be back in an hour going to test it now! :SaiyanSmi hehe |

Ok well i will answer the question about the Fairmont ghia with VCT irs etc anyways back to topic when i first got car yes 180kms it hit limiter but when i used to have the chiptorque item in it i asked to get limiter removed but its hard to say as when i tested it i was going down a slight incline and speedo was sitting on about 200kms but with tailshaft woes i wasnt going to go more.
Ive inquired about fitting manual "t5" and i got told this is what i need--- console-pedal box-tailshaft-of course shifter-computer ad acouple of other bits and the price was hitting $3500. If i want to break the speed limit ill try to pursuide bugatti in them giving me the veyron and then have some fun.
