I'm not sure how to take the BMW straight 6 in it. I would have like to have seen a modern version of the 2JZ.

Still awaiting the Road Car, though it's a shame it won't get the 500+ hp it deserves in the 21st Century

The rumour of 250kw just doesn't really cut it these days. The older Supra's were "206 kw", as was the Japanese voluntary power limit, but they made much more in reality.

New Supra will be quite lightweight with power to weight around 170kW per tonne (XR6T is 157kW/tonne) - so it won't be slow. Rigid body and 50/50 weight distribution F/R , short wheelbase - they designed it as a sports car and not a muscle car.

Agreed, should have a Toyota engine in it.
Being one of the biggest automakers, they should have been able
to find a few bob for one... Or borrow a Barra turbo!

Pretty disappointing really. Toyota has the means and the knowhow to make a hot and spicy in-line six, yet they grow lazy and use a BMW engine, sporting a very low performance per dollar factor. Guess it will be a bigger brother to the 86, which is also a half hearted effort, sporting a Subaru n/a engine...

I for one will be watching with interest- if the price is right and the handling is exceptional-and not over the top with stupid aero foils and stripes- may roll for one in 3 years - be a nice knife to go in the rack with the FGX XR8- musclecar and sportscar.

Wonder what the price will be for the blown 6. There apparently is a hot 4 as well.

From reading- seems that the US pricing is round $40,000- here in AUS with the car being built in Europe- will no doubt be a $90,000 to $100,000 car- then you would have to think M2 or second hand Porsche?

Not sure why they would borrow a Barra when the old 2JZ is so much better..

either way I don't think Toyota Plans on making too many of these, so its not worth the development. hence the BMW donk.

even with the sales of the GT86 they partnered with Subaru for the engine.

They should have put the engine from the M2 in it if they were using a BMW power-plant. I'm sure it would have been a better response if they had have put a 3.0 turbocharged straight 6 in it from the M cars.

Lol, the Barra comment was a touch of sarcasm.

Fair comment regarding development costs and the use of the BMW engine,
but growing up with a mechanic as a father, there were probably three straight six engines that I remember as being extremely smooth, and for my limited knowledge both then and now near enough to be equals.

They were the Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Toyota.
The six in my Aunt's Toyota Crown was so smooth and quiet; and although probably down on power compared to the others, certainly remains burnt into my braincells as a standout.

Also not forgetting the Nissan 6 that I discovered later on in my growing years.

I love my Fords, don't get me wrong, and we had a wonderfully torquey and smooth 300 cu in donk in our family transport at the time, that also impressed me, but didn't quite have that finesse.

Not until our modern day Barra at least. Hence my comment!

I'm sure Toyota would find a home in their line-up outside of the Supra for a new modern straight six, but I guess I can dream of the old days, can't I?

Ed

Looks small and ugly - seems a very far step away from the older MA70 and JZA80/MKIV Supra.

Reminds me of the BMW Z3 or what ever it is.
