Default what air filter do you use?

i have a k&n panel filter on my xr8, i read that the filter oil makes the MAF dirty and result with the car rev hunting and such.

what sort of "dry" filters are out there that still work well.

I personally wouldnt worry about it. I have had a k and n for a while and cheked out the maf, very minimal build up in my case. Not really worth the worry, the k and n do a great job 4 me.

I use a K&N and haven't had a problem, if you are worried about it try buying some MAF cleaner. That solves that problem.

K&N oil filters are fine, if they are not overoiled, however i have had a fair few Uni filters and their green rip offs causing some issued with AFMs as they cannot retain their filtration oil and clog up the AFMs, especially the hotwire type ones.

I was told when I replaced the MAF on my EF that the K&N was the cause, and the supplier of the new MAF would not guarrantee the MAF if a K&N was used. THat said, I'm still using one..

If it bothers anyone that much you can just go back to paper and lose a bit of flow/power/throttle response...

I use a Fram oiled air filter. I was using a K&N filter for a while there, but after 3 cleans, the cotton started to degrade. And that was using the K&N recharge kit and following the instructions.

So far I've cleaned the Fram filter twice and it looks as new. Absolutley no difference in performance and economy between the K&N and Fram.

I've cleaned the MAF and T/B once, and even then, there was barely anything on them.

Maybe your just putting too much oil on after you clean it? Though it is pretty hard to tell when its just right. I have a BMC Pod filter.

I have a Redline panel filter in the XR6...I put it in 3 1/2 years ago , I just blow it out with the air compressor then soak it in metho for awhile and then blow it out again and then spray a bit of lithium grease on it..... I dont know if all this does it any good but its never done it any harm..lol...Its done more than 100,000k's so maybe its time for a new one....although it still looks the same as the day I bought it.

How do you know when the filter needs replacing?

well alot of engine re conditioners won't give a guarantee or warranty on their engines if anything other than the standard air and oil filters are used.

plus a lot of you don't realise that a k and n filter is actually illegal as it gums up the insides of throttle bodies and manifolds causing the sensors not to function properly.

i did a lot of research on these and other things and the things that are illegal or require an engineers certificate is mind boggling.

i believe there only illegal if there exposed in the engine bay, in nsw mate.. but im more then happy to be proven otherwise..

had no complaints from the police here about my pod being in the oem airbox box...

i use a K&N pod filter .. its so much better over the oem panel filter thats for sure...

Odd that mine isn't gummed up after 50 odd thousand k, I think I'd be more worried about blow by gumming up my throttle body and manifold as opposed to an oiled filter.

Many of our mods are illegal, exhausts, intakes, wheels etc etc as the rules that must be adhered to basically restrict you to a stock as factory car.

As for engine "reconditioning", anyone who actually gets a reco engine needs their head read as I can't see the point in putting used parts back into a pulled down engine along side new bits.

What? I didn't disagree with you but as I said nearly all of our "mods" are illegal.

This thread also isn't about legalities, it's about what filter we use.

Yep K&N in the ute and the Ghia.
It did cause a problem on the ute once with the MAF hotiwres being coated in oil but its just as easy to clean them as it is to replace an air filter, EASY.

Dont Lukey do non-oiled air filter now?

Yes, its another K&N from me.

Not sure if they make any real difference but what the heck, it was our anniversary and I had to buy the missus something.

I use a BMC panel filter, I think it does what it's supposed to do pretty well. I did use a K&N recharge kit to clean it last time actually, so maybe it's a hybrid now.
