Good value quality tyres - 205.55.16

wife's focus is up for 2 more tyres. just after some feedback on some decent tyres that are good wearing and reputable brand.

last tyres i bought were kumho kh18's. these are standard fitment on many small cars and seem to be going ok, but i'm not impressed with the lack of rim protection. clearly they are old design tyres.

being a front drive car, even with rotating it never wears all 4 evenly, so i'm always tending to buy 2 at a time. first thought was to just get 2 more of the kumhos so that they are all matching, but as long as they are the same from side to side, i'm not bothered if they are different front to rear.

i generally stick with the big names and those that have been around for many years. i don't need performance, so basically just look at the stock tyres.

i run kumho ku27's on my FG and they are a great long lasting tyre but alas, they don't come in the right size for the focus.

so, some suggestions please on some good quality tyres that will last more than 30-40000km.

I bought a set of Toyo Teo plus for her car chasing a quieter tyre and they ended up doing 90 something thousand k's, run into the wear indicators but not bald. They were $160.00 I think from memory. Since replaced with $95.00 chinese cheapo's (Hifly's) and are every bit as good but are well down at ~60,000 k's.

wow, thats some seriously impressive mileage. our focus does less than 10000km/yr, so something that lasts that long would likely be needing replacement due to age well before it was worn.

i don't mind spending up around $300 for 2 tyres, but closer to $250 would be preferred. interesting feedback on the cheap tyres. thanks.

Kumho KU39's look to come in that size ... and are a higher spec Kumho than the ones you mentioned.
About $140 a tyre .... finding them in-stock might be a pain though.

What's the load/speed rating for the Focus????

Both sets of Dunlops I've tried had good rim protection. Direzza DZ102's are a bit better than average performers, but they are nowhere near as good as the Bridgestone Potenza RE003's I have presently. Both are around $160 a corner in that size on Tyre Sales.

Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus. Got 90000kms out of these on my tdci focus . They did get a bit noisy after about 60 or 70000kns.

I had Toyo TEO Plus on my TDCI Focus and I ditched them after nearly 50,000km with plenty of tread left, it lasts ages but its terrible grip wise.

My rear tyres after ~48k km are still on factory rubber. Tread is still good but how many years will the rubber last? Surely they have a time limit too?

I heard Michelin Primacy 3 ST are good, nice handling and very quiet on the road and has high rating reviews. For now, I'll be stuck with these Bob Jane Xenon Z7 tyres that came with it when I bought the car until it's all gone. These tyres actually aren't too bad, and they run better when you keep the pressures lower and less vibration in the cabin.

about 5-7 years give or take, depending on what you read or which salesperson you talk to...

My tyre ages as calculated from the manufacture date stamped, and km are:
Front: 2.16y 15,500
Rear: 6.36y 47,322
Would it be enough to get new ones on the front and move the fronts to the rear?

thanks for the feedback so far.

not interested in performance orientated tyres. they are normally softer and the car is a shopping trolley, school bus etc.

a decent everyday tyre will serve the purpose fine.

i normally get my tyres from Kmart tyre and auto, as they are the cheapest near me, and also price match and also have really good service, so i'll see what they have available. they do all the big brands so should have the bridgestones, toyo's and dunlops etc.

the kumho ku39's mentioned earlier don't appear to come in the 205-55-16 size.

Hmm, I have Hankook Ventus S1 noble2 H452 on the front, they are 215/55R16

They were $165 each, did well to stop me from 100km/h to almost 0 when someone cut me off because they forgot to take a freeway exit.

So are 205 not 215 the correct size?

date stamp is normally a 4 digit code, with first 2 numbers being the week, and last 2 numbers being year.

not familiar with codes you have listed.

pirelli don't look like it offers much in the way of rim protection, although it could just be the generic pic on their website.

I put goodyear assurance triple max on my wifes fiesta when the oem continentals wore out at 40 k. The goodyears have done about 22k. no sign of wear good grip little bit noisier than the contis which are a quiet tyre but also a wear out early tyre.And bear in my mind this is also all urban work lots of roundabouts braking and a bit of kerb hitting so yes looks like these goodyears are quality.

With the 205/55/16 Focus I had a 2008 LT diesel and I pit Bridgestone Turanxa Serenity Plus on. The diesel needs a grippy tyre as its too heavy over the front and doent handle as well as a petrol. I think I got 90 k out of those tyre but they got noisy from about 40 or 50k.
But they are a grippy tyre and I think Bridgestone have a 4 for 3 deal on. Someone else talked about Toyo Teo had these on my diesel earlier -they lacked grip and I didnt trust them in the wet however on a petrol they would be a different set of circumstances.

Anyone while we are talking tyres an expert on tyre pressures?

I drive about 8 kms a week on a badly potholed dirt road-should I run higher or lower presures?

On the same vein I drive about 250kms a week on a rutted uneven concrete road motorway at 110km/hr again to combat rough ride should I run lower or higher tyre pressures?

You should always run the recommended tyre pressures. In fact, if you do regularly drive over rough roads, you should pump them up harder. I run 36psi always.

Don't lower the pressures either to try to get a smoother ride; your tyres walls will flex more and heat up leaving you prone to punctures.

Somewhere on this site I read that they are recommended to 80% of the max tyre pressure written on the side of the tyre. I seem to get a good ride at 34psi out of mine

After 25000km these are pretty much cactus. about 1mm or less to the wear indicators. They didn't get rotated, admittedly, so spent their whole life on the front. Buying on price can very much be a false economy. I think I'll look at some of the other brands mentioned where people are getting a much better run. I must remember to rotate them more regularly. Rears are still the Kumho so while not worn out yet are probably approaching the age limit so 4 tyres will be needed.

I also run 36psi all round. Wear is even on all 4 tyres shoulder to shoulder.

I had Toyos when I first had to buy replacement tyres, then ran Pilot Sport 3 for the next two cycles and now running Dunlop FM800. Very nice so far, but only had them a month.

Took advantage of the black friday Pirelli sale through mycar (formerly kmart tyre and auto) yesterday. I was after the P7's but couldn't book them online due to limited stock. After an hour and a half on hold, i gave up and bought the P6's, which were available to book online.

$77each for Pirelli cinturato P6. Can't go wrong really. 4 tyres for $308.

Hopefully they give a better run than the triplemax mentioned earlier. The sale was very timely for me.
